6" Danny Romero Yaqui Sugilite, sterling, shell modernist cuff bracelet

    1 auf Lager

6" Danny Romero Yaqui Sugilite, sterling, shell modernist cuff bracelet. Well made, sturdy bracelet with no damage or significant wear. Danny only used the highest grade materials, this is some of the most beautiful deep purple Sugilite I have seen., fantastic design. “I construct each piece with sheet and wire first. My inspiration for design comes from many sources. The purple hues and angular shapes of the desert and mountains, a Frank Lloyd Wright building, petroglyphs, Mibres pottery, or the pyramids of Mexico are all examples of what may influence my art, says Danny Romero. Danny, who initially set out to become a medical doctor, began experimenting with jewelry design as a hobby. He quickly discovered he had a natural talent and decided to pursue jewelry making as a career. He never regretted his choice. Danny, who was Yaqui, acknowledged that many of his sterling silver cast pieces were inspired by prehistoric petroglyph carvings and Hispanic religious symbols. Danny was also a recognized master of intricate inlay design. Working in both silver, 14k and 18k gold, he would often include up to 1,500 individually cut pieces of precious and semi-precious stones in his one-of-a-kind pieces. Painter John Nieto launched Danny in a new direction when he asked him to create an inlay version of one of his portraits. Danny explored the idea of portraiture in jewelry, using his artwork and the work of others for inspiration. “I like E.S. Curtis photographs, he says, referring to the turn of the century photographer and the ethnographer who documented more than 80 native American tribes. “I go through magazines then I start drawing and go from there. From those sources, Danny produced detailed portraits in stones. “Lapis will be the darker colors, and yellow or red will be where the light is hitting. Pipestone out of Minnesota, which is a pottery kind of color, can be the shading, and pinks are the highlights. I enjoy bringing the colors of the earth to light." Sadly, Danny Romero passed away on August 18, 2018 at the age of 64, after a long battle with Alzheimer‘s. Danny worked with our gallery for many years and with multiple generations of the Garland family. He was an incredible artist and an even better human being. His personality and creative talents will be greatly missed.

6" Duane Makitma Hopi 14k gold Multi-stone channel inlay cuff bracelet. 5" plus 1" gap, 6" total inside including gap. 25mm wide in center tapering down to 15mm on the tips, 10mm tall, 64.2 grams. Super clean with no detectable damage or wear inside or out. I don't believe it has ever been worn. Hallmarked by artist twice in interior, hallmarked 14k 3 times in interior. A very well respected artisan, at the time of listing this is arguably the best piece of his being offered for sale online. Comparable silver bracelets by this artisan retail for around 3-4k. This would probably retail for 20k+ with current gold and material prices directly from the Artisan or at a gallery. This bracelet it composed of 14k gold, Gem Silica, Natural Australian Opal, Carnelian, Chalcedony, and Lapis Lazuli. Duane is of Hopi and Laguna heritage and is a master craftsman. He creates exquisite jewels by hand, using fine materials.

Duane Makitma was studying education at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, when a dean suggested he switch his major to art. “ I thought it would be a hobby.” Growing up in tiny towns in Arizona under the tutelage of his Hopi and Laguna relatives, Maktima learned how to carve and paint, but these artworks were referred to as “blessings” and not art. The Dean, having seen Duane’s work was insistent. When Maktima first laid eyes on the jewelry in the jewelry lab, he says, “It was like my whole life flashed before my eyes, I was hooked.”

It took a decade for Maktima to complete his degree. He left college to work as a resident artist at the nearby Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. At only 19 years old he was given a studio and stipend to make jewelry which was snapped up by visitors from around the world. Eventually he embarked on a personal retreat from the pressure and spent 3 years at Laguna Pueblo. Maktima worked there as a survey helper and everyday he walked the country from Second Mesa to Black Mesa. During these long walks he came to deeply appreciate his heritage and decided to complete his education.

When he did return to university, it was an exciting time for Native American artists. His research into African and Indian art led him create spiritual based pieces from beads, shell work mosaics, motifs from Hopi pottery, hollow silver tubes, gold , lapis, turquoise , and red coral. In 1982, Maktima, received a second-ever fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts. He moved to Sante Fe a year later.

An active community leader, he has influenced many young people to pursue a career in art. His brooches, buckles, and other exquisite jewelry have been featured in some of the best Native American galleries. In 1990, Northern Arizona University honored the artist with its 2000 Distinguished Alumni Artist Award, Distinguished Achievement Award, and member of the President’s Circle. Maktima credits his achievements to his education and his family. “I can hear grandpa saying, ‘You have really learned something. You’ve really excelled with what God gave you.’ ”

According to his grandfather, the name “Maktima” means “searching for eagles.”

6" Richard Tsosie Navajo sterling silver, coral, shell, turquoise cuff bracelet . Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pictures. Expected wear, circa third quarter of the 20th century, no damage or unsightly wear. Artists hallmark shown. Richard is perhaps best known for his distinctive textured silver designs. His trademark technique of granulation was discovered by accident when he noticed silver filings were fusing onto a ring he was soldering. He calls the process which produces this granulated surface texture “reticulation, and he has been perfecting the technique throughout his career. Born in 1956, Richard has been a jeweler since the mid 1970s. He learned jewelry making from his brother Boyd and from Kenneth Begay at Navajo Community College in Arizona. He quickly progressed from basic tasks of cutting and polishing stones to the more complex process of inlay. Richards contemporary silver and hold work features the use of fabrication, overlay, and granulation. He is also known for colorful inlay work with a variety of natural stones and for his fine degree of control and attention to detail. His designs are motivated by images of the natural world, particularly the Wide Ruins area of the reservation where he spent a large part of his youth. Richard says of his work, “I am inspired by the colors of the mountains at sunset, the patterns of shadow and light that emerge at dawn, and the pinpoints of starlight against the black night sky. His pieces typically contain the symbol for lighting and an arrow pattern. The lightning stands for natural causes, while the arrowhead symbolizes man-made elements. Richard says the design represents the ups and downs of life. “Some things we cant do anything about and you should try to enjoy life to the fullest.

6" Ron Bedonie Navajo heavy stamped sterling silver turquoise cuff bracelet

    1 auf Lager

6" Ron Bedonie Navajo Intricately stamped sterling silver turquoise cuff bracelet. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pictures. Very clean with no significant wear, very high grade turquoise stone with a beautiful chocolate matrix. Could be Bisbee. Elegant, chiseled silverwork defines Ron Bedonie‘s fine Navajo jewelry. His buckles, bracelets, bolas, and concha belts are distinguished by extraordinary stamping and chiseling--work that earned him many first-prize ribbons over the years at the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial competition. “I pressured myself into getting finely chiseled lines because it was more of a challenge," Bedonie said of his work. In addition to jewelry, he also created unusually shaped large and miniature containers, which were fashioned for practical use. His complex silver containers were composed of as many as 18 individual pieces when they were completed. Ron Bedonie began working with silver when he was 20 years old, having learned sliversmithing techniques from his parents, Lutricia Yellowhair and John Bedonie Sr. Rons mother Lutricia (d. 2021) was especially a major support and influence in his life. She was a highly-skilled silversmith who specialized in the feather design. Initially, Ron learned soldering techniques, then went on to learn stamping from his cousin, Thomas Jim. Ron was inspired to make a container after seeing one of Jims pieces, and he was encouraged to hone his skills by the Heard Museum and other established galleries. Ron Bedonie made his own stamps and chisels based on his sketches, and sometimes used old car parts to create his tools. Sadly, Ron passed away in 2024. We will miss him! An extremely talented and resourceful artist, Garlands is proud to have been able to feature Ron Bedonies work over the years.

6 1/8" Luis Mojica 14k/sterling and fossil inlaid cuff braceletLUIS MOJICA The artist has lived all his life in the Rio Grande valley of southern Colorado and New Mexico in the region once known as the frontier territory of the Spanish Empire in the new world and later as a state of the Republic of Mexico. The region became part of the United States in 1848. the term mestizo or “mixed blood” describing the heritage of inter-marriage between Europeans and the native peoples of the Americas is correctly applied to the artist, and is where his artistic identity began and continues. The cultural roots that underlie the artwork of Luis Mojica may not be obvious to the casual observer. Throughout his extended career as as an artist, designer, jeweler, ceramist, and painter, he has striven to transcend the limitations of provincialism and conservatism that characterize his traditional Hispanic upbringing in order to create work that is current and expressive of a larger world view. Yet, values such as respect for tradition, persistence in the face of adversity, and a belief in the importance of life long education and spiritual growth have formed the foundation of his artistic efforts as well.Over the years of his career, Mojica has become recognized as one of the most innovative and proficient jewelry artists in the Southwest. His work is distinguished by the highest standards of craftsmanship, unusual combinations of materials, and a clear sense of functional design. His inspirations include the landscape, colors and cultural icons of the American southwest which are subsequently abstracted into his jewelry designs and finished pieces. His intent to offer jewelry that is well designed and executed, which has the distinct and unique qualities that can only come from the hands of a seasoned practitioner.Mojica’s work in precious metals has been seen in museum exhibitions and collections of the Heard Museum, Phoenix, AZ, the Museum of International Folk Art, and the Museum of Spanish Colonial art in Santa Fe, NM, the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, Albuquerque, NM and the Millicent Rogers Museum, Taos, NM. For over twelve years the artist was a participant in the annual Traditional Spanish Market held each July on the Plaza in Santa Fe, where his role as award winning exhibitor expanded to include lecturer, teacher and mentor of aspiring youth artist. He retired from Spanish Market in 2011.The artist currently maintains a home and studio in Albuquerque, NM.All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) Santo Domingo silver turquoise nugget cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics. Solid sterling silver, unusual early work by Vidal Aragon that demonstrates the diversity of his skill as a silversmith. Circa mid 20th century. 6 1/8" inside including the 1 1/8" gap 5" from terminal to terminal without the gap. From Santo Domingo Pueblo, Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) translated pueblo life into intricate storyteller jewelry. He became internationally renown for his inventive silver and gold overlay designs. His representations of the elements of nature, animals and pueblo life are symbolic of the Indian way. One symbol refers to “everlasting happiness. Other common motifs are animals and the tracks they make and the blessing and nourishment of corn. An expert craftsman, Aragon drew each story strip with his saw blade and soldered it to a textured oxidized underlayer to illuminate the images. He often incorporated a trademark gold disk to represent the sun or moon. Vidal Aragon learned the overlay technique in the 1930s when he was a student at the Santa Fe Indian School. Before inventing the storyteller jewelry, he experimented with tufa casting and other metalworking techniques. He briefly lived in Scottsdale where he honed his skills as a shop smith. He has fond memories of the time he spent learning ballet as a young man in Phoenix. By the early 1940s, Vidal was already being recognized alongside such prominent smiths as Ambrose Roanhorse and Tom Burnsides for his innovative yet classical designs. Aragon found his true calling though when he began to translate his rich sense of the pueblo way of life into wearable stories, often full of his unique humor.

  • 6.25" Andy Lee Kirk Isleta pueblo Sterling silver turquoise inlaid cuff bracelet - Estate Fresh Austin

6.25" Andy Lee Kirk Isleta pueblo Sterling silver turquoise inlaid cuff bracelet

    1 auf Lager

6.25" Andy Lee Kirk Isleta pueblo Sterling silver turquoise inlaid cuff bracelet. Solid sterling silver, circa last quarter of the 20th century. This artist did very little work in silver as his work was so desirable/expensive. I believe he is one of the few 20th century Native American artists to have done more work in gold than in silver. Even in the 70‘s he was working in gold, but most of the silver jewelry he made was in the 70‘s. So while this may not be more valuable than a similar gold bracelet, it is rarer. Weight and measurements in pics, all solid sterling. NO issues. Andy Lee Kirk was a Master contemporary Native American artist of Isleta and Navajo heritage, who died tragically at the height of his career at the age of 54. He created beautiful gold and silver jewelry using the finest materials from 1970 to 2001. Born in 1947, he originally earned a degree in biology continuing on to work for the Fish and Wildlife and Forest Services. Andy had learned the basics of jewelry making at the University of New Mexico and with the urging of Navajo artist, Gibson Nez, he made the decision to become a full time jeweler. Andy Lee Kirk was a consummate artist with many fine skills. He did lapidary work, rolling his own beads, and had mastered many types of precious metalwork including lost wax and sand cast techniques, stamping, engraving, overlay and fabrication. His artistic innovation reached further than aesthetic beauty alone. His designs were brilliant a perfect balance between clean modern lines, meaningful symbolism, and bright southwestern colors such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, and red coral. He was the IACA Artist of the Year in 1996 and earned many other prestigious awards and accolades including First Place and Best of Division at Santa Fe Indian Market and Best of Category at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, NM.

6.25" Harry Morgan Navajo silver Bisbee turquoise cuff bracelet No issues, solid sterling, weight and measurements in pictures. Morgan, Harry Biography Harry Morgan is known for his classic revival style jewelry with its smooth, soft, antique finishes and classic design. He is a fifth-generation silversmith. Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Harry Morgan began casting jewelry at age seven. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style. The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM. He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him. Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004. Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. Harry Morgan won awards at every major Indian art show, and had an exhibit of his creations at the Heard Museum in 2007, a year before he passed way.

6.25" Marc Antia Apache 14k/Sterling Azurite cuff bracelet, clean with no damage or significant wear. Weight and mearements in pics. Part Apache and part German, artist Marc Antia is a self-taught silversmith that has being making jewelry for decades. When he isnt masterfully working on new pieces, he travels across the United States to display his work at Native American jewelry and craft shows. Marc has created a following for his elaborate stamped jewelry. He often combines sterling silver and 14k gold to make pendants, rings, and cuffs. Despite the formality presented by his use of gold in Marcs jewelry, the durability of his pieces is apparent; upon wearing, one immediately knows this is something that can take the abuse of a daily wear. And yet, they are surprisingly lightweight. One well-versed in Native American jewelry might notice that the traditional Navajo stamp style seen in Marcs jewelry is liken to a fellow Native American artists work: Emerson Bill. This is no coincidence, as both artists learned the ways of their trade together. This occurred in their salad days, and they grew to be close friends. Marcs work can be distinguished from Emersons by his addition of extra embellishments and flourishes in his stamp work. His classic stamping on his gold and silver jewelry make Marcs work wearable with just about any outfit or color scheme, let alone that it works incredibly well with other Native American handmade jewelry pieces. While still formal and ornate, Marcs work also reflects humility in both its function and its roots in traditional technique.

Mark Chee is known for traditional stamp work and high quality stone settings in unusually heavy silver.

Richard Tsosie Navajo Silver cuff bracelet with high grade turquoise and pearl.

Richard is perhaps best known for his distinctive textured silver designs. His trademark techniqie of granulation was discovered by accident when he noticed silver filings were fusing onto a ring he was soldering. He calls the process which produces this granulated surface texture “reticulation,” and he has been perfecting the technique throughout his career.

Richard’s contemporary silver and hold work features the use of fabrication, overlay, and granulation. He is also known for colorful inlay work with a variety of natural stones and for his fine degree of control and attention to detail. His designs are motivated by images of the natural world, particularly the Wide Ruins area of the reservation where he spent a large part of his youth. Richard says of his work, “I am inspired by the colors of the mountains at sunset, the patterns of shadow and light that emerge at dawn, and the pinpoints of starlight against the black night sky.”

His pieces typically contain the symbol for lighting and an arrow pattern. The lightning stands for natural causes, while the arrowhead symbolizes man-made elements. Richard says the design represents the ups and downs of life. “Some things we can’t do anything about and you should try to enjoy life to the fullest.”
