Throughout his art classes in school, he always wanted to create the perfect shape. His first career, however, took him into the Forest Industry. He soon realized that he wanted to follow the yearnings of his heart and create beautiful jewelry.He borrowed jewelry tools from his father-in-law and set to work, learning the demanding craft of silversmithing. Richard was immediately drawn to the intricate inlay work, for which he is known for. As he perfected his craft, Richard explored different techniques of inlaying. He was always searching for the best way, the most beautiful setting, the perfect harmony of material and craft.He also developed an eye for choosing the best stones for his inlay. Turquoise and coral are his favorite, but Richard used a wide variety of stones and shells, including malachite, spiny oyster, and pacific coral. Not limited to the usual in anything he did, he also inlaid opals, sugilite, lapis and other exotic stones into his award-winning pieces.The importance of harmony in his work was echoed in his silverwork, especially his pendants. In these pieces, he incorporated important symbols from his culture. Corn was a significant gift to the People by the Creator--it represents life to the Navajo. The Yei-Be-Che is the personal link between the Navajo gods and mortal man. The Bear, one of the four animals given to the first people, embodies power and wisdom. It was provided for protection and guidance, and to ward off evil. Richard also used the Steppe Design found in the wedding baskets and recreates special times, such as the social dances he goes to. Vintage Moorcroft columbine vase, mid 20th century 4.25" tall x 3" wide. No cracks, chips, or restorations, expected crazing. <br><br>William Moorcroft was employed by Staffordshire pottery manufacturers James Macintyre & Co. Ltd. as a designer in 1897, and after a year he was responsible for the company’s art pottery studio.<br><br>William Moorcroft created designs for the Macintyre’s Aurelian Ware range of high-Victorian pottery, which had transfer-printed and enamelled decoration in bold red, blue and gold colours. He also developed the art nouveau-influenced Florian Ware which was decorated entirely by hand, with the design outlined in trailed slip using a technique known as tubelining. William Moorcroft’s designs won him a gold medal at the St. Louis International Exhibition in 1904.<br><br>Each piece of pottery produced was personalised with Moorcroft’s own signature or initials.<br><br>William Moorcroft and James Macintyre & Co. Ltd. split up in 1913 and Moorcroft founded his own factory nearby. Some finance came from the famous London store Liberty, and Liberty continued to exercise control over Moorcroft until 1962.<br><br>Moorcroft’s reputation was further enhanced with the appointment of the Moorcroft company as Potter to HM The Queen in 1928. On the death of William Moorcroft in 1945, his elder son, Walter, took over management and design and he continued in this position until his retirement in 1987, after which he continued contributing to Moorcroft designs.<br><br>During the tenure of Walter Moorcroft, the Liberty store’s interest in Moorcroft was purchased by Moorcroft in 1962.<br><br>In the 1980s Moorcroft got into financial difficulties as a result of rising wages and fuel, which were exacerbated by the labour intensive techniques employed by Moorcroft and the company went through several changes in ownership with the result that from 1993 the company was controlled by the Edwards family, which is still the case.<br><br>The young 24 year old designer Rachel Bishop joined Moorcroft in 1993, as only its fourth designer in almost a hundred years and her designs become immediately popular. sz6.5 Chief Wolf Robe Hunt (1905-1977) Acoma silver and turquoise ring 1.5" long face, 15.9 grams<br><br>Wayne Wolf Robe Hunt, a full-blood Acoma Indian (1905-1977). Born on the Acoma Reservation, Wolf Robe was the son of Chief Day Break (Edward Proctor Hunt), Chief of the Delight Makers -- a man instrumental in the improvement of relations between the Acomas and whites. His mother, Morning Star, whose own father was Governor of Acoma seven times, was a potter and weaver. Wolf Robe learned silver-smithing from his older brother on the reservation. Wolf Robe achieved recovnition and fame for his jewelry and art work, winning the prestigious Philbrook Art Center's Grand Award in 1967. In addition, he was a businessman, with his own arts and crafts store in Tulsa, a lecturer, international traveller, author, and translator for the Bureau of American Ethnology. He assited L. A. White in his extensive studies of the Acoma Indians and made recordings for the National Anthropological Archives. Wolf Robe was particularly interested in the preservation of tribal customs, language and culture, and devoted his own time to this and the encouragement of others in similar efforts. Of his work at BAE he said, "My work there as an interpreter is the highlight of my efforts in trying to preseve all of the rich and wholesome lore of my people."* Not only was the preservation of the 'old ways' important to Wolf Robe, but also the representation and dissemination of his culture to whites, in an effort to promote their understanding and appreciation. Unmarked, attributed.. I am extremely confident that this is Mark Chee's work, it is obviously an old bracelet, circa mid 20th century. The stampings, the clean bezels around the abstract natural stones, the back, overall design, everything about it is indicative of Mark Chee's work.<br><br>Mark Chee (1914-1981) Biography<br>Navajo artist, Mark Chee is among the earliest southwest silversmiths. Mark Chee is known for traditional stamp work and high quality stone settings in unusually heavy silver. He was born in Lukachukai, Arizona around 1900 and was sent to government school at Fort Defiance (a United States government practice during that time) from the age of 10 to the 11thgrade. He is the elder brother of Joe Chee. <br><br>He was active during the 1930s through ‘60s. He specialized in heavy silver in old style designs. He began polishing silver in Julius Gans’ Southwest Art and Crafts shop in Santa Fe for $5.00 a week. He then bought a few tools and used them all his life. He quickly became an accomplished silversmith and was hired as a bench smith at Frank Patania’s Thunderbird Shop and later at Al Packard’s shop on the Santa Fe Plaza.
