If you would like to chat, that would be great, but lets chat about something that isn't answered in this listing that we put so much effort into already :)

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.

anderas

His parents, Richard and Gladys Kagenveama, were very prominent artists. His mother, Gladys is considered one of the top Hopi coil basket weavers.Bennetts jewelry exudes a level of intricate detail not seen in other Hopi overlay jewelry. He created his jewelry by overlaying multiple layers of silver and finished with delicate oxidation and intricate hand texturing. This interesting contrast in the textures of his silverwork is what really makes his work stand out. Bennett specialized in the Kachina designs, including dance scenes with kivas and pueblos in the background. Bennett passed away in 2025. Beyond being a wonderful artist, he was a friend who we will greatly miss. Bennett was a soft spoken, humble, and very kind man. He was very well thought of by his peers and his work garnered praise from collectors all over the world.

  • 6.6" c1950 Navajo Arts & Crafts Guild silver cuff bracelet - Estate Fresh Austin

6.6" c1950 Navajo Arts & Crafts Guild silver cuff bracelet

    1 en stock

6.6" c1950 Navajo Arts & Crafts Guild silver cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pictures, solid sterling silver. No issues. Navajo Arts and Crafts Guild The foundation for an arts and crafts guild for the Navajo tribe was laid in 1939 when a crafts program was established at Fort Wingate, New Mexico with assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Ambrose Roanhorse was selected as director of the project, the purpose of which was to provide employment for those who had learned silversmithing at federal Indian schools as well as for established silversmiths in the vicinity. Roanhorse distributed supplies on the reservation and collected finished work to be sold through the guild. By 1940, with the help of the Indian Arts and Crafts Board (IACB), the program was established as the Navajo Arts and Crafts Guild (NACG), though it was not formally chartered by the tribal council until 1941, at which time it moved to Window Rock. Silver was produced either at the guild shop, in the homes of the craftsmen, or at community workshops established on the reservation. Materials and supplies were issued only to craftsmen who could meet the standards and requirements for quality established by the guild. These standards were similar to the stringent standards set in 1938 by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board silver stamping program (which meant no power-driven machinery nor sheet silver could be used in the production)[see Note * below]though craftsmen having their own materials, supplies, and workshops could offer their products for sale to the guild. Full-time managers were hired, and one of the first was Anglo anthropologist John Adair. In his 1944 book The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths, Adair wrote, The purpose of the guild is to increase the tribal income from the sale of arts and crafts by promotion of fine handicrafts which will sell in quality stores in the East, Middle West, and Southwest. The tourist market is purposely avoided, as it does not yield as high a return per man hour as the more exclusive stores and shops. The type of silverware that the guild promotes is similar to that which has been at the Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Fort Wingate Indian schools; a revival of the old simple types of jewelry, without sets for the most part. Emphasis is placed on cast work. The guild also handles vegetable-dyed rugs and some aniline-dyed rugs of similar pattern and excellent workmanship. (pg 209) Two of the “quality stores who purchased from the Navajo Guild in 1947 were Marshall Fields and Tiffanys. In 1943 the United Indian Traders Association (UITA) complained that the guild was in direct competition with the traders. The controversy continued in 1946 during the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial when Arthur Woodward, one of the judges of the silversmithing division, was shocked to learn that the craftsmen who worked with the NACG were not permitted to submit their work for competition. The Ceremonial board contended the Navajo Guild was government subsidized and should be disqualified; Woodward refuted their claim in an open letter published in the Gallup Independent newspaper, saying that guild craftsmen were in business for themselves and questioned whether the Gallup traders feared their silver would fare poorly in competition with the silver made by guild craftsmen. Despite complaints from the reservation traders, the guild continued to succeed and grow; Ned Hatathli was named the first Navajo manager in 1951. In 1964 the guild opened its first branch at Cameron, Arizona, under the management of Kenneth Begay. By the late 1960s the NACG had added branches at Betatakin (Navajo National Monument), Kayenta, Teec Nos Pos, and Chinle. In 1971 the guild became the Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise (NACE) and continues to be the only Navajo Nationowned business engaged in the purchase and sale of Navajo-made arts and crafts. The title “Navajo Arts and Crafts Guild and its Horned Moon logo were registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 1943. Items made through the NACG were hallmarked with the Horned Moon logo and often included the word NAVAJO. Sometimes individual silversmiths hallmarks are also found on these pieces. Note* For discussions of the Indian Arts and Crafts Board silver stamping program that ran from 1938-1943 see Reassessing Hallmarks of Native Southwest Jewelry by Pat & Kim Messier, Native American and Southwestern Silver Hallmarks by Bille Hougart, and The Native American Curio Trade In New Mexico by Jonathan Batkin. IACB numbers were assigned April 1938, but the Navajo Guild at Fort Wingate was assigned US NAVAJO 70 in March 1940.

6.6" c1950‘s Large Bell Trading Post copper repousse Southwestern cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pictures, marked as shown. Mid 20th century with appropriate wear. The system of trading posts in the arid southwest had an enormous impact on how the area was shaped, both economically and in the minds and imaginations of travelers to the area. One such post was established by Jack Michelson and his wife, Mildred, in 1932 in the growing city of Albuquerque. Mildreds maiden name was Bell, so the Michelsons chose the name Bell Trading Post for their business. The post was located along the new highway known as Route 66. Michelson hoped this spot would be a boon in establishing his business as a place where tourists could find locally made Native American jewelry. The beginning years were a struggle but the location did help the trading post hold on, particularly when Roosevelts New Deal created the CCC and truckers were hitting the roads to transport goods. Bell Trading Post was in the right location to sell them souvenirs for their family back home. Jobs were hard to come by then and many Native artisans were willing to make Jack Michelsons jewelry. But money was scarce as well so the Michelsons looked to earlier entrepreneurs like Fred Harvey for how to make their new business a success. They installed their own machines for making the jewelry and used copper and nickel more than silver and gold to create their pieces. In the initial years, the post marked its jewelry with the image of a bell. Over the years there would be other trademarks they used, such as an arrow with a bell sign hanging from it. Most of these trademarks included a bell in some part of the design. Due to the fact that he had little competition, Jack Michelson decided against paying the cost to file these initial trademarks used during the 1930s. The years during WWII saw the business boom. The southwest was designated as a military training area and there were many soldiers far from home looking for gifts to send back to their families. Bell Trading Post expanded its business and began to sell their products wholesale to other tourist shops. With the death of Jack in 1957, the business of Bell Trading Post passed to his children, Jack, Douglas and Jacquelyn. The change ushered in a new era for the company. The siblings opted to file their first trademark, and to expand their product line. In 1969, they formed Sunbell, a corporation which oversaw their new product lines such as Oglala Lakota moccasins and copperware as well as their jewelry. Sunbell remained in business until the late 1980s.

The bears and bezel are solid 14k gold, looks way better in person.Wichita jewelry designer Dina Huntinghorse incorporates a blend of traditional and contemporary jewelry techniques to create masterful works of wearable art. Although gold and silver work is rarely seen among the tribes of the Great Plains, Dina‘s life experiences introduced her to the craft, and inspired her to develop her own unique style.Raised in southwestern Oklahoma, Dina‘s first love was of horses, and she learned to reproduce their likeness in pencil sketches and paintings. She was later taught the traditional art of beadwork by an aunt, and became known for her beaded deerskin purses. In 1989, her interest in jewelry was piqued when her late husband, Navajo jeweler Herbert Taylor, taught her to cut beads and do inlay work. Dina began making jewelry on her own in 1996. Her work is featured in galleries throughout the southwest, and she is a regular participant at the Heard Museum Market and the Santa Fe Indian Market.Along with her respect for the horse, Dina is also known for her affection for the wolf. Through many of her designs, Dina honors her tribal teachings of the wolf‘s legendary hunting abilities and their human-like regard for the family (pack).

6.6" Perry Shorty Navajo Black Web #8 Turquoise sterling silver cuff bracelet. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. No damage or issues. Weight and measurements in pictures. Collected 20-30 years ago but appears unworn. There are no white spots in the turquoise of course, they are reflections. This artist only used the very best, high grade American turquoise. Born in Ganado, Arizona, in 1964, Perry Shorty is a Navajo silversmith known for his hand-forged jewelry that reflects the classic early Navajo style. Using traditional techniques of the first, second, and third phase jewelers (1880-1940s), Perry hand-extrudes silver wire, applies intricate stamp work, and uses files, chisels and appliqué to create complex designs on the surface of his pieces. His work could easily be celebrated as a revival of the elegant jewelry of the 1940s with its meticulously hand fashioned art nouveau appeal. Shorty makes the majority of his own stamps and is a master of many techniques including: fabrication of beads and squash blossoms, tufa casting, repousse, twisted wire, drawn wire, and appliqué of silver ornamentation. He utilizes all of these methods to create intense works of art capturing fragile intricacies at a fascinating depth. The artist chooses to work with coin silver to construct his creations, melting down ‘Charles Barber (1890 to 1915) silver coins and casting them into ingots. Every single piece made by Perry is unique. “I often design a piece as I go along, he explains, “not knowing exactly how the finished piece will look until it nears completion. On the other hand, sometimes I know exactly what I want from the start. I try to work with the stones they dictate the style. Much of his inspiration comes from studying early jewelry in museums, galleries, and fairs where he would talk with the older Navajo people wearing traditional jewelry. Inspired by the silversmiths who came to sell their wares at the Gallup jewelry supply store where he worked, and apprenticing for three years under his brother-in-law Ernie Lester, Shorty began making jewelry in the mid 1980s and continues to produce cherished treasures today. Perry is a highly collectible master jewelry artist using only the finest grades of turquoise to accent his extraordinary and exclusive compositions.

Almost all bracelets that don‘t have inlay work should be adjustable by at least .25", please refer to pictures for the gap size to see if it would work if slightly adjusted as the gap would change. Ramona Loloma Poleyma (Hopi) made jewels from 1977 to 1984, she also excels at making rugs. Ramona was born on June 27, 1934 and lives in Hotevilla, Third Mesa Arizona. Ramona, sister of Charles Loloma, were aunt and uncle of Verma Nequatewa and Sherian Honhongva. Apprenticing with Loloma (Nequatewa from 1966, Honhongva from 1976), the sisters worked with him until his retirement in the late 80s. Their sense of continuity with and difference from him was reflected in the name they chose to share when they began to exhibit together in 1989: Sonwai is the feminine form of the Hopi word for “beauty (the masculine being “loloma). Around 1993 the sisters began to work independently. Nequatewa continued with the Sonwai name, while Honhongva used her own name.

6.6" Robert Chee Navajo deep stamped sterling silver cuff bracelet w/turquoise. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Great condition with age appropriate wear, last quarter of the 20th century. Robert Chee is a talented Navajo artist from New Mexico, near the famous Manuelito Trading Post where much of the finest Navajo rug weaving is done. Now most of the weavers have passed on, and it is rare to see the next generation weaving. Robert specializes in traditional jewelry, and he excels in silver casting and stamp work. Robert was born in 1952 at home. There were 10 children in the family, and Robert was number nine! Robert’s father worked as a silversmith for the old Mike Kirk Trading Post. Robert has fond memories of growing up there, lots of hiking in the mountains and arroyos. They would also ride horses. He is related to famous Navajo jeweler Harry Morgan, his first cousin, with whom he apprenticed under. They grew up together living under the same roof, and in the early days they lived in a hogan (traditional Navajo 8-sided home). Their mothers were sisters. The Navajo are a matriarchal society, and he had a strong upbringing in the traditional ways especially due to having two mothers.Robert has two children of his own, but they are not interested in taking up silversmithing. In his spare time, Robert enjoys working around the house, old cars, and spending time with his grandchildren. Listed with ExportYourStore.com
