Calvin Martinez - born 1960 -draws his creative inspiration
from his Navajo heritage. ”I look to the old silversmiths and my culture. There
would not be a Calvin Martinez silversmith without the Navajo tradition to guide
me“.

He comes from a well- known family of silversmiths; his brother Terry Martinez,
is also a well-known silversmith. Calvin’s jewelry is made with traditional old
techniques, he makes everything by hand, including hand cutting his bezels. He
only uses high quality natural stones in his work.

Calvin Martinez crates his jewelry in the pure style of the first Navajo
silversmiths. His clear, substantial pieces, featuring the best gemgrade
turquoise, speak eloquently of the very nature of the Navajo: unassuming people
with strong convictions about their place within the balance of nature. Calvin
brings this attitude of quiet strength to each of his creations.

With only heavy-gauge silver, skillful hands and an eye for balance, he infuses
each piece with the power of simplicity. Kyle has become skilled at making Navajo
pearls and fluted design beadwork from single strand necklaces to traditional
squash blossoms. This Turquoise Mine produces Turquoise in multiple shades of blues
to beautiful greens. Carico Lake Turquoise has become very popular and highly
collectible in recent years for its beautiful shades of a spring colored lime
green running through a sea of light sky blue with golden brown spiderweb
matrix.

The Carico Lake Turquoise Mine produces beautiful blue Turquoise but is most
known for its spectacular shades of lime green colored gemstones. This fabulous
lime green coloration is actually caused by a close relative of Turquoise
mineral called faustite, the combination of faustite and zinc associated with
the Turquoise creates one of the most beautiful coloration effects in American
Turquoise that has ever occurred in nature. The Carico Lake Turquoise Mine also
produces very rare psuedomorph clams that have been fossilized with Turquoise -
this Turquoise is very rare and very expensive.

The Carico Lake Turquoise Mine got its name from its unique location, in ancient
years there was a lake that has since dried, hence "Carico Lake." Mining is very
limited these days which makes the supply of this material limited. Due to the
great demand for Carico Lake Turquoise, it has become one of the most valuable
types of American Turquoise and the investment value of this Turquoise is great.

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. 6.75" Cody Sanderson Navajo Heavy Repousse silver cuff bracelet

    1 en stock

6.75" Cody Sanderson Navajo Heavy Repousse silver cuff bracelet.Cody Sanderson was born in Gallup, New Mexico, USA in 1964 and was raised in Window Rock, Arizona – the seat of government and capital of the Navajo Nation. Cody had a less than glamorous upbringing as many other natives living on the confines of a reservation do, but this hardscrabble life helped to develop the determination, perseverance and hard-working ambition that has attributed to Cody’s success where others have failed. Cody has gained world renowned recognition for his pieces due to his daring creativity and unique, distinctive style.Cody’s use of stars is ubiquitous in almost all of his designs. Stars are recognized in every country and continent and appears on countless flags. They symbolize the heavens, brightness and good fortune. Cody wants his brand and his pieces to convey and invoke the same positive energy to everyone who wears his jewelry or his apparel. When describing his brand with one adjective – FUN is the first thing that comes to mind! Cody wants everyone, young and old, male or female to enjoy his adornments and the craftsmanship, imagination and enthusiasm he brings to each and every work of art! Cody’s slogan is – Wear it Now! Wear it Well! Wear it Out! Achievements Of Sanderson’s Silver Craft Utilizing the fast-disappearing technique of hand-forging and integrating them with CAD and 3D printing, Cody is combining traditional methods with modern technology and bringing his designs to the 21st century! His simple ring design, for example, is shaped into a “square-circle” with an inverted V appearance. It speaks of volumes of Sanderson’s insight into the skeletal system and attempt to make the ring more comfortable for wearing.Regardless of how “aggressive” a piece may look, Cody spends hours cutting, bending, shaping and refining the piece to ensure prolonged wear-ability without causing any discomfort to the wearer or admirer. Since the brand’s inception in 2001, Cody has won numerous awards for his work including the 2005 SWAIA (Southwestern Association for Indian Arts) Fellowship Award and the 2008 “Best of Show” Award at the Heard Museum in Phoenix.Transformation From Scrap Ingot To Stunning Work Of Art!Melting - Annealing - Quenching - Rolling - Grinding - Annealing (2nd time) - Bending - Shaping - Texturing - Annealing (3rd time) - Stamping - Repousse Stamping - Repairing - Soldering - Annealing(4th time) - Quenching - Finish Grind - Hand Hammered Shaping - Annealing (5th time) - Quenching - Anticlastic Shaping - Fitting - Oxidation - Polishing - FinishedEver since 1999, each of Cody’s handmade pieces from his bracelets to rings to earrings and more have been made using ancient and traditional time consuming methods. Due to these complicated steps and difficult processes to achieve the “Artistic Value” he was looking for, he would only produce a few pieces at a time. Cody’s attention to detail makes all of his pieces worthy of the title “World Class”!!!All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.

6.75" Hector Aguilar Taxco Sterling silver Beaded circles bracelet

    1 en stock

6.75" Hector Aguilar Taxco Sterling silver Beaded circles bracelet, all measurements in pics. Hector Aguilar was a master silversmith, jewelry maker, and the first graduate from William Spratling’s famous apprenticeships in Taxco, Mexico. He met
Spratling almost by chance while bringing a load of tourists to Taxco from
Mexico City in the 1930s. Aguilar was one of Spratling’s best pupils, who often
worked with close-to-pure silver (rated at 980 instead of the 925 of sterling
silver on the silver scale). Aguilar was also a great businessman who only
stayed at Spratling’s workshop for three years before finding investors for his
own workshop, Taller Borda.

Aguilar’s Taller Borda became a huge success in 1943, when they secured a
contract with an American jewelry company, Coro. They produced several notable
designs for Coro throughout the 1940s. Hector kept Taller Borda running until
1966 when he closed up shop and enjoyed a nearly 20-year retirement, his place
in the firmament of great Mexican silversmiths already secured.

What kind of art did Hector Aguilar make?
Hector Aguilar was a silversmith, jewelry designer, and artist whose work helped
popularize Mexican silver in the 1940s and 1950s. His workshop’s pieces for the
retailer, Coro were instrumental in this endeavor. That relationship lasted
nearly a decade and produced some of Aguilar’s most vital work. As with most of
the Mexican silversmiths from this time, these designs were heavily inspired by
pre-Columbian artifacts and the folk art of Mesoamerica. Aguilar’s work
continued to innovate over the next several decades, bolstered the quality of
his pieces, which often used much more pure silver than his competitors. These
days Aguilar’s jewelry is highly sought after for his mastery of the craft of
silversmithing as well as its extremely high silver rating.

How did silversmith Hector Aguilar get started?
Hector Aguilar was born in 1905 in Mexico City. Not much is known of his early
years, but a chance encounter with William Spratling in the early 1930s set him
on a silversmithing career that would span three decades. Aguilar brought
tourists from Mexico City to the small town of Taxco, a place that as fate would
have it also was where Spratling was starting his silver workshop. Aguilar
worked for several years as the shop manager for Spratling while also becoming
an apprentice silversmith. After three years, Aguilar left to start his own
workshop, Taller Borda. That workshop would create countless beautiful pieces,
with unceasing quality up until its closure in 1966.

Howard Sice (Hopi - Laguna) Sterling silver waterweb turquoise cuff bracelet. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with sterling mark. Weight and measurements in pictures. Nice bracelet from the last quarter of the 20th century with no issues. Collected, but never worn it seems. Howard Sice (Hopi - Laguna) Arizona, USA Native American jewelry artist. He is self taught. Over his career, he has been the recipient of countless awards, including Best of Show and 1st Place. He was raised on the Laguna Pueblo of Paraje but split time with relatives in Hopi so his work displays strong influences from both cultures. He served twenty years in the Air Force inclusive of a year in Vietnam. While in the service he obtained a degree in a special area of medical research (lab work). While still in the service, in 1972, he started working in jewelry in 1972. He has added to his skills over the years. It was once he started engraving in 1985 that his metal work became distinctly identifiable. I love that he still does small, dainty pieces that are affordable to virtually anyone. I purchased a pair of his earrings in an airport store in Denver 25 years ago for myself without knowing who he was. I still love them and wear them regularly. He has fairly recently started working with several very interesting materials. The first is Niobium. I probably shouldn‘t even mention it given I sold out of the pieces I bought before I got a chance to post them but I will get more at some point. Niobium is a metal that, when oxidized, can take on some beautiful colors. The other metal Howard is working in is Argentium silver. Standard Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Argentium is classified as Sterling as it still has a 92.5% silver content but a small portion of the copper has been replaced by Germanium. The result is startling. There are a number of advantages to the artist in how they can work with the material but to the end user (and me) the difference is the huge reduction is tarnishing. The finished work also is amazingly bright, noticeably more so than even the most polished standard Sterling. Argentium requires makers (artists) be registered with them to utilize the distinct hallmark of a flying unicorn. Howard is a registered user and is moving over to the use of Argentium almost exclusively. I will mark on each piece if it is Argentium. Artist may USE Argentium without registration but may not use the hallmark. I had some work by Myron Panteah that I‘m all but certain was Argentium but was not hallmarked as such. Howard‘s business is a family affair with both his wife, Patricia and daughter being heavily involved. His daughter is an accomplished silversmith. They are lovely people and I really enjoyed their company this year (2017) at Prescott Indian Market.

6.75" Isaiah Ortiz San Felipe Modernist silver cuff bracelet, no issues. Isaiah has forged his own jewelry making path like no other Native American artist. He works for himself making heavy-gauge sterling-silver cuffs, bracelets, pendants, rings and earrings. All of his silver work is hand cut and with its heavy construction, strong lines and sharp angles, his art is equally at home in modern jewelry stores as it is in reservation trading posts..Isaiah was born in 1977 and raised at the San Felipe Pueblo in New Mexico. Isaiah grew up helping his father, Raymond Twinhorse, an accomplished silversmith, create and sell jewelry. He started out selling his bracelets, rings, earrings and pendants in Santa Fe on the plaza, at the Heard Museum show and Santa Fe Indian Market where he still exhibits and sells. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. • 6.75" Kirk Smith Navajo sterling and turquoise cuff bracelet - Estate Fresh Austin

6.75" Kirk Smith Navajo sterling and turquoise cuff bracelet

    1 en stock

6.75" Kirk Smith Navajo sterling and turquoise cuff bracelet. Native American jewelry artisan Kirk Smith, or Kiyaa Alani Shush Dine (his Dine tribe name, meaning “towering house bear people clan”), created a long-lasting legacy in a tragically short life. His work is highly regarded for its quality craftsmanship and his use of stones of only the highest quality and richest coloring. Kirk’s pieces, primarily his concho belts for which he was best known, have long been coveted and collectible, with their value only increasing as a result of his unexpected, early death. His story is an interesting one. HIS LIFE: Kirk Smith first began working with silver at around age 7 in his grandfather’s hidden workshop, that according to Smith’s interview with Perry Null Trading, “you would not see it unless you knew it was there”. His grandfather also made jewelry and Kirk used to aid him by first learning to run the bellow to heat the charcoal that would allow his grandfather to work with the silver at high temperatures, and then eventually began to work with beads and bracelets and necklaces himself. He later used these primitive skills to craft jewelry for his uncle, who would exchange clothes and shoes for his pieces. In 1972, Kirk struck out on his own, primarily working in silver cast work, until the price of silver went up in 1974 and he went to work doing different things like working in the mine or a refinery in Galveston. He returned to jewelry making in the early 1980s when his mother got sick and he desired to be nearer to her. That’s when his craft took a turn. HIS MENTORS: Of course, his grandfather was his earliest influence, and perhaps the most profound on Kirk as a person, but when it comes to his craftsmanship, the game-changer for him was his brother-in-law. Kirk’s sister was married to an artisan named Harry Morgan, a well-known name in the world of Native American jewelry. Harry was known for his intricate stamp work and the way he would style his silver to give it an antique look, believing that overly polished silver hid the detailing and the beauty of a piece. It was Harry who really taught Kirk about design and style in terms of his craft. HIS CRAFT: Kirk is probably best known for his concho belts, like the one we found in Audrey’s closet, that we thought was too beautiful not to share with y’all after being tucked away for too long. He was known for his unrelenting insistence on working his silver by hand, resulting in beautiful pieces of heavy silver and high-grade stones. In addition to concho belts, Kirk crafted gorgeous statement cuff bracelets with turquoise and red coral and some of the most striking blue lapis you’ve ever seen, as well as some rings, pendants, earrings, and even a few squash blossoms. As we mentioned, his work is highly collectible, not only because of its stunning beauty, but because sadly, there won’t be any more made; Kirk was tragically killed in 2012. HIS DEATH: On September 17, 2012, Kirk was in an altercation in a parking lot with a young man whose truck had struck Kirk’s vehicle as the man was attempting to back into a parking spot. When the driver, who was intoxicated, tried to flee the scene, Kirk jumped onto the hood of the man’s truck. When he was eventually unable to maintain his grip, Kirk was flung from the moving vehicle and suffered injuries which resulted in his death in an Albuquerque hospital a little while later. The driver did succeed in fleeing the scene, but eventually collided with another truck and a barrier on Interstate 25 and was apprehended after a violent struggle with police; he was found to have had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16, twice the legal limit. Incredibly, the driver, who was 16 at the time, was only sentenced to 90 days in a treatment center and two years probation. As you might imagine, Kirk’s surviving family does not feel that justice was done in the wake of his death, but they are carrying on his legacy in a positive way despite the circumstances. Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. 6.75" Mark Chee (1914-1981) Navajo Huge #8 Turquoise silver cuff bracelet. No damage or issues, weight and measurements in pictures. Fits a 6.75" wrist including the gap, sturdy but still adjustable if necessary. Please look at gap size in the pictures, it would of course change if the bracelet were adjusted. If the stone is half the weight here then it is is over 400cts. While typically stone value would not be a prime concern on a piece made by Mark Chee, this stone has considerable value. There are people out there who would price this stone by itself at about what I'm asking for this bracelet.Mark Chee (1914-1981) “was born in Lukachukai, Arizona, and educated in the Indian School system. By the age of twenty, he was working as a silversmith in Santa Fe for Julius Gans at Southwest Arts and Crafts. Chee enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in the Air Force (sic) during the war. Returning to Santa Fe in 1946, he married a woman from San Juan Pueblo where they made their home.“At this time, Chee was employed by Al Packard at Chaparral Trading Post in Santa Fe, and he worked in the shop for many years, likely until the early 1960s. He was recognized as one of the most skilled Navajo silversmiths working at that time. He won many awards for jewelry and especially for his sets of handmade silver flatware. A single table service required at least a month of work and was usually accomplished between the time he was making jewelry for orders or for sale in the shop.“It was reported in the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper in 1958 that Chee made his own tools and only utilized the modern implements of torch, electric buffer, and silver saws. He worked in all techniques of silverwork including overlay, inlay, and hand-stamping, but is best known for his very heavy-gauge bracelets set with high-quality turquoise stones. His most recognized bracelets consist of either heavy solid bands with deep chisel work or split-shank cuffs with turquoise stones set between massive carinated bands. Chee signed his work using a right-facing thunderbird with his last name in the body of the bird. He worked into the late 1970s and died in August 1981 after a lengthy illness.Reference: all of the biographical information is courtesy of Reassessing Hallmarks of Native Southwest JewelryArtists, Traders, Guilds, and the Government by Pat Messier & Kim Messier, Schiffer Publishing, 2014:107anderas
