1950's Frank Patania Sr(1899-1964) Modernist southwestern Sterling RC Bolo tie.
2" wide bolo slide 37.7 grams with no issues. Rare possibly one of a kind, Frank
Patania and his studio did a lot of custom pieces. This is obviously the RC Cola
logo but at this point I have no way of knowing if it were made for say a
company exec or someone with the initials RC. Shouldn't really matter, it's very
cool.

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. Anything marked is guaranteed to be what
it's marked, most bracelets are photographed on a 6" wrist (non hairy), rings
photographed on the appropriate sized finger when possible. With bracelets if
the measurement is not given in the description then inside circumference is
shown where the metal meets the number on the the cloth tape measure.

Frank Patania Sr. immigrated to New York City in 1908. Child labor laws kept the
young man from working as a craftsman, but after World War I he was old enough
to be hired as a designer for an important jewelry firm. In 1924 he contracted
tuberculosis, and the firm sent him to a sanatorium in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Patania was seduced by the active art colony and healthy climate, and chose to
remain in the Southwest even after his health improved. His work reflects both
his European training and his exposure to Pueblo and Navajo jewelry.

The legacy left by Frank Patania, Sr. came from the integration of two
distinctly different traditions-one European, and the other Native American. On
the one hand, Frank Sr. drew from a long history of Italian creative spirit,
combining technical expertise and artistic imagination. He instilled in his
family the Italian commitment to fine craftsmanship, as well as the Italian
custom of family corporate bonding.

This uniquely Italian tradition can be traced back as far as the Renaissance,
and provides a structure in which each member of an artisan family has a job to
perform that contributes to the family enterprise. This familial check and
balance system has been a powerful asset to the Patania family's continued
standard of excellence through the years. But Frank Sr.'s style was drastically
transformed when he was introduced to the work of southwest Native American
jewelers in the 1920s.

His inspiration was multi-faceted; he began to work in a new medium-silver and
turquoise-as well as in increased scale, and using new techniques. The
successful marriage of these two disparate traditions has become the foundation
upon which each generation has maintained the tradition of excellence in
craftsmanship and design that has come to be known as the "Patania Thunderbird"
style.

1950's Hotel Statler Insulated Hot water Pitcher for coffee with room number. 7" tall x 5.5" wide with handle. no dents, bends, or other issues. As clean as they come. TW204 The first "permanent" Statler hotel was designed by August Esenwein and James A. Johnson, built in Buffalo, New York, and offered 300 rooms and bathrooms (later expanded to 450 rooms and baths). The hotel was successful and led to a chain of hotels in other cities. Statler's intent was not to compete with the luxury hotels, but to provide, clean, comfortable, and moderately-priced rooms for the average traveler. Statler was the first major hotel chain to have a bathroom in every room. His innovative Statler Plumbing Shaft is still used in modern construction. From providing paper and pens for correspondence (prominently bearing the Statler name) to a light in the closet, Statler brought the average traveler a level of luxury that was otherwise unaffordable. Rooms were originally available at what seemed a very cheap price, leading many other hoteliers to predict the failure of the Buffalo hotel. The opening night price was as low as $1.50 for a guest room, leading to the slogan "A Room and a Bath for a Dollar and a Half". The hotel had a $500,000 line of credit available, but maintained positive cash flow and Statler never used the line of credit. Each of the subsequent Statler Hotels built upon this formula for success. Reflecting the era's enthusiasm for scientific management, Statler took pride in how he standardized questions of room design.[1] His hotels had minimal wasted space, particularly on the guestroom floors, and he strove to have room layouts that would maximize efficiency and profitability. After Statler's death in 1928, the company built hotels in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, California, Hartford, Connecticut, and Dallas, Texas. Many of these hotels were designed by the architectural firm of George Post & Sons, the successor firm of George B. Post. In the mid- and late-1940s, pianist Liberace "gained national exposure through his performance contracts with the Statler and Radisson hotel chains".[2] The Hotels Statler Company, Inc., was sold to Conrad Hilton's Hilton Hotels in 1954 for $111 million, then the world's largest real estate transaction.

1950's William Spratling Modernist Sterling cross pendant. Gold wash on center cross with some wear.Spratling, an architect and artist who taught at Tulane University in New
Orleans, came to Mexico in the late 1920s and settled in the city of Taxco.
Having developed an interest in Mesoamerican archaeology and culture from his
colleagues at Tulane, he traveled to Mexico for several summers lecturing and exploring. He sought out remote villages in the state of Guerrero, 110 miles from Mexico City, where in some places Nahuatl, the Aztec language, was spoken.
Spratling collected artifacts and contemporary indigenous crafts. Spratling made
a fortune manufacturing and designing silver, but his true life's work was to
conserve, redeem, and interpret the ancient culture of his adopted country. He
explained for North American audiences the paintings of Mexico's modern masters
and earned distinction as a learned and early collector of pre-Columbian art.
Spratling and his workshop gradually became a visible and culturally attractive
link between a steady stream of notable American visitors and the country they
wanted to see and experience. Spratling had the rare good fortune to witness his
own reputation -- as one of the most admired Americans in Mexico -- assume
legendary status before his death. William Spratling, His Life and Art vividly
reconstructs this richly diverse life whose unique aesthetic legacy is but a
part of its larger cultural achievement of profoundly influencing Americans'
attitudes toward a civilization different from their own.

1950s Ana Nunez Brilanti for Victoria of Taxco sterling silver and mixed metals
pre-Columbian design bracelet. The design is in two shades of sterling silver
with copper and brass. Fully marked as shown. Measures 1-3/4" wide all around.
No damage, minimal expected wear. 46.5 grams.

Victoria-Ana Nunez de Brilanti (1910 – 1999) Victoria is the trade name of this
distinguished Taxco Silver designer. She opened her first shop, Victoria, in
1940. When she opened her workshop, William Spratling gave her support and
friendship. Simultaneously, Margot de Taxco offered advice to improve the
quality of her work.

Victoria is credited with introducing the metales casados or married metals
technique to Taxco. She designed sterling silver jewelry out of silver and
copper that contained no backing making the front and back look similar.

Victoria’s creations incorporate many designs in her jewelry that include
flowers, animals, fish, nature and Pre-Columbian art. She also created unique,
modern designs. She was a strong advocate of the 1948 Eagle mark system to
assure quality.

In the early 1950’s, she and her immediate family opened Cony, the shop named
for her eldest daughter. Much of the jewelry created by Victoria and Cony is in
grade 980 silver, an almost pure form of silver. Before she passed, Ana spoke
out about what she believed was the poor quality of silver coming from Taxco
workshops since the late 1980’s.
