A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. sz6.75 Chief Wolf Robe Hunt (1905-1977) Acoma silver, turquoise, and branch coral ring 21.1 grams.Wayne Wolf Robe Hunt, a full-blood Acoma Indian (1905-1977). Born on the Acoma Reservation, Wolf Robe was the son of Chief Day Break (Edward Proctor Hunt), Chief of the Delight Makers -- a man instrumental in the improvement of relations between the Acomas and whites. His mother, Morning Star, whose own father was Governor of Acoma seven times, was a potter and weaver. Wolf Robe learned silver-smithing from his older brother on the reservation. Wolf Robe achieved recovnition and fame for his jewelry and art work, winning the prestigious Philbrook Art Center's Grand Award in 1967. In addition, he was a businessman, with his own arts and crafts store in Tulsa, a lecturer, international traveller, author, and translator for the Bureau of American Ethnology. He assited L. A. White in his extensive studies of the Acoma Indians and made recordings for the National Anthropological Archives. Wolf Robe was particularly interested in the preservation of tribal customs, language and culture, and devoted his own time to this and the encouragement of others in similar efforts. Of his work at BAE he said, "My work there as an interpreter is the highlight of my efforts in trying to preseve all of the rich and wholesome lore of my people."* Not only was the preservation of the 'old ways' important to Wolf Robe, but also the representation and dissemination of his culture to whites, in an effort to promote their understanding and appreciation. He travelled all over Europe and to Australia for the Departments of Agriculture and Commerce, representing the American Indian to an appreciative audience. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. sz6.75 Vintage Matl Sterling Turquoise and Amethyst ring
sz6.75 Vintage Matl Sterling Turquoise and Amethyst ring. Weight and measurements in pics. No issues. MAT-MATILDE POULAT & RICARDO SALAS JEWELRY Matl is the mark that appears on some of the most beautiful and unique jewelry in Mexico. Matilde Eugenia Poulat introduced MATL in 1934 and, since her death in 1960, her designs and techniques have been carried on by her nephew, Ricardo Salas. For sr. Salas, who can recite poetry in the language of the Aztecs, the mark matl, has greater meaning in its reference to the Nahuatl or Aztec word for water, atl. As a young woman, Matilde Poulat studied painting at the prestigious San Carlos academy of fine arts in Mexico city, she went on to teach painting classes at an art school until her interest turned exclusively to silver. Matilde Poulat´s designs for jewelry and figures were part of the new cultural vision among Mexicos intellectuals after the revolution in 1920s, artists were searching for Mexican aesthetic, rejection European subjects in favor of the art of the pre-conquest Indians and of the Mexican pueblos. Sra. Poulat found inspiration in the mextec gold jewelry discovered in 1932 at Monte Alban. Her choice of motifs the dove, flowers, and tiny bells are reminiscent of the whimsical subjects of contemporary Mexican folk art. Matilde Poulat received international recognition for her jewelry when she was asked in 1941 to participate in an exhibit of Latin American silver at the pan American union in Washington, D.C. as a result of increasing demand for matl silver during world war ii , the number of silversmiths in the taller increased to thirty-three. In 1950, Srta. Poulat and her nephew opened a showroom on the first floor of her home, where she also had the workshop. Ricardo Salas recalls that they made three thousand types of silver jewelry and one hundred different pieces. Ricardo Salas worked closely with his aunt from the time he was eleven years of age. He says she recognized his artistic talent when she saw him do a play with puppets he had made himself. Sr. Salas was sent to the San Carlos academy, where he received the premio Diego Rivera. As a youth, he learned the techniques of the silversmith and perfected the carving of "Off White", coral, turquoise, and other stones used in the jewelry and figurines. From sr. Salas perspective, he and his aunt collaborated so closely as designers, that there really cannot be a comparison of their work. In 1955, William Spratling wrote of Matilde Poulat: “she has continued to produce some of the most charming native jewelry in Mexico, intensely her own. Her jewelry has the same charm and delightful surface and colorful quality of the old lacquer work of Uruapan. Spratling`s admiration for matl silver reflects his recognition of their shared appreciation for Mexican native art. This mutual inspiration led each of the two artists in different directions within the same medium. The exuberance of matl silver resembles the interiors of the churches in Puebla, like the chapel of Santa Maria Tonantzintla, where Indians covered the interior of the dome with polychromed and gilded angels. In matl silver, the introduction of color is accomplished with bits of coral, turquoise, and amethyst quartz. The surfaces are decorated with applied wire and elaborated with embossing and repousse of astounding complexity (pl.XXIII-1, XXIII-10). Matilde Poulat and Ricardo Salas have been successful in incorporating the artistic language of the Mixtecs into jewelry and silver figures with imagination, drama, and with a style that is completely personal.

sz7 1970's David K Lister Navajo Sterling, turquoise, and coral ring
sz7 1970‘s David K Lister Navajo Sterling, turquoise, and coral ring. Weight and measurements in pics, no issues. DAVID K. (D.K.) LISTER (Navajo) The Lister family, with Alice Lister and David Lister at the helm, are one of the most highly regarded families of Navajo jewelry makers working today; their renowned pieces in turquoise and sterling silver represent meticulous traditional methods and both traditional and contemporary designs. Living on the vast Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona, David Lister and Alice Lister, both silversmiths, have practiced their artistry together for thirty-five years, passing their craft on to four of their daughters, including their youngest, Davida Lister, who lives and works with them and Dee Nez, who lives across the street and also works alongside her parents in the same workshop. It is land where Davids grandmother once lived and which now houses several homes, workshops, sheds and horses - and from which exquisite jewelry makes its way to eager and discerning collectors. Each Lister creates their own pieces from start to finish, the only collaboration being some pieces which Alice Lister and David Lister create together, and each individual has their own distinctive style: Alice Lister puts a modern twist on traditional ideas and prefers to work with blue-green turquoise while David Lister also likes working with coral and tends to include stamp work; Dee Nez likes lots of color with the oranges of spiny oyster turning up alongside turquoise, blue lapis, green gaspeite or purple sugilite; pieces by Davida Lister are defined by the depth and size of her stones and she enjoys collecting from a wide variety of mines. Silversmiths Alice and David Lister, who helm one of today‘s most highly regarded families of Navajo jewelers, reflect both tradition and contemporary style in their stunning hand-cast work. Alice often features blue-green Turquoise Mountain stones in her pieces, which draw inspiration from her dreams and from the stones, as well as from modern fashion. Alice notes, "I look through modern fashion magazines and put the turquoise where the diamonds are." David is drawn to coral and stamp work. When they collaborate, David makes his own stamp dies and Alice acts as lapidary. The couple married in 1972 and has been making silver and gold jewelry together since 1975. Their small, tidy workshop on the Navajo reservation in northeastern Arizona hosts both Alice and David, as well as their daughter Dee Nez and, on weekends, her younger sister Clarissa Hale and husband Vernon all accomplished jewelers. (Andrienna Tapaha and Andee Lister, two other Lister daughters, craft jewelry in Flagstaff.) Alice and David typically work only with galleries in Sedona. All of their silver is hand-cast; all of their stones are of the highest quality, all natural and untreated. From necklaces, cuffs, earrings, buckles and bolo ties, the Lister family sets a high standard in the world of high-end Navajo jewelry. Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Sorry but my jewelry is stored in a secure location and cannot be accessed for more pictures,<br>videos, or measurements until sold. sz7 Chief Wolf Robe Hunt (1905-1977) Acoma silver and variscite ring 15.2 grams, appear to have a ding on one end of the stone.Wayne Wolf Robe Hunt, a full-blood Acoma Indian (1905-1977).
