He is best known and loved for his painstakingly beautiful handcrafted precision stamp work in heavy-gauge silver creating sophistically stimulating jewelry. Born in 1942 into a family of skilled silversmiths, Thomas Curtis observed the secrets of his family’s finely crafted silver work and began creating traditional Navajo jewelry by the age of 12. Before committing himself completely to the art of metalsmithing, Curtis was a champion horseback rider and won many awards as a member of the All-Indian Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association performing bareback, bull riding and saddle bronc. The rodeo is where he was given his acclaimed surname, ‘Curtis’. Born as Thomas Redhorse, his family name was the source of many jokes while working in the rodeo and was given the name ‘Curtis’ by a stock contractor who wished him to be recognized for his riding talent and not overshadowed by a name. After somersaulting backwards off of a horse and injuring himself in 1969, Thomas left the rodeo to pursue his craft as a silversmith full time.Thomas Curtis grew up observing his uncle who was a blacksmith and had a business repairing wagons. “It was like today’s car garage, he had wagons lined up. I would help him, I was fascinated by all of the tools and I had an interest in working with metal.” Curtis elaborated on his fascinations with blacksmithing while working in the rodeo, and continued them into his jewelry making career by hand making the hardened steel die stamps that identified him as one of the premier Navajo silversmiths of his time. Thomas Curtis believed an artist should be a part of every process in the creation of their work, and he took monumental pride in the art of making his own die stamps for his harmonious arrangements. Curtis was often quoted finding inspiration for his pieces by, “looking at the ground, the sky, the plants, and the four seasons.” He also turned to sacred traditions, sourcing his patterns and descriptive style from traditional weavings, historic and contemporary construction from the 1890’s-1940’s, and adapted classic ketoh designs for the lids of the elaborate silver boxes he is known for. Thomas Curtis had an extreme talent for delicately balancing compositions of traditional design motifs with his intense skill, generating dramatic results with refined charisma. With only an 8th grade education he excelled as an artist and craftsman who, like his precision stampwork, deeply embedded a profound mark in the history of jewelry making, raising the standard for quality work and inspiring others to push themselves to greater heights. sz7.75 Lee and Mary Weebothee Zuni Mediterranean coral inlay ring, no issues.Lee and Mary Weebothee are master Zuni silversmiths and inlay artists from the Zuni Pueblo. Mary unfortunately passed away in 1993. They both made jewelry since the 1940’s and Lee has said that they sold to wonderful traders like C.G. Wallace, R. L. Wallace, Joe Tanner and Dude Kirk. They also sold beautiful jewelry to Don and Nita Hoel over the years.Lee was born in 1929 and Mary in 1933. Lee and Mary married in 1949 and started making jewelry together shortly after. Greg Schaaf stated in his book “American indian Jewelry: 1200 Artist Biographies” that “they were one of the best husband-wife teams in the history of Zuni jewelry”. Lee did most of the silver work while Mary was the stone cutter, which she learned to do from Lee’s mother, Lula. She is known for her master stone cutting skills which are very unusual because of the rounded edges on the stones. They both then set the stones. They are very well know for their interesting cluster work but they also did other types of work using beautiful high quality stones. sz8 Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Cheyenne, b. 1933) Sterling and turquoise ring<br><br>Ben Nighthorse Campbell was born to a poor family in Auburn, California in 1933.<br>He grew up to be a Northern Cheyenne chief, Korean War veteran, judo wrestler,<br>U.S. Olympian, jewelry designer and the first Native American serving in the<br>U.S. Senate.<br><br>Campbell dropped out of high school and joined the air force, serving in the<br>Korean War. While serving in the military he received his GED high school<br>diploma. He studied the martial arts and became a judo wrestler. He captained<br>the judo team in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. After returning to the States he<br>graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in physical education<br>and fine arts. He also attended Meiji University in Tokyo and received more than<br>200 awards for his jewelry designs.<br><br>Campbell began his political career in 1982 becoming a state legislator in the<br>state of Colorado. In 1987 he moved to the U.S. House of Representatives and<br>then in 1992 became a senator from Colorado. He was reelected in 1998.<br><br>Senator Campbell serves as a member of the Appropriations Committee, Energy and<br>Natural Resources Committee, Veteran’s Affairs Committee and the Indian Affairs<br>Committee. He also chairs the Helsinki Commission. He was the first Native<br>American ever to chair the Indian Affairs Committee. He has worked to pass<br>legislation settling Native American water rights and protecting Colorado’s<br>wilderness areas.
