1 en stock

13.25"wide x 7.5" tall. No cracks, chips, or restorations. Incredible piece with
hand painted Gilding and decoration. Guaranteed circa 1830's.
Decoration possibly by Joseph Bancroft. In 1808 the brothers John and William
Ridgway jointed their father Job's factory at Cauldon Place, Hanley in
Staffordshire and in the same year the production of bone china was added to
that of earthenwares. The early Ridgway porcelains were in Spode style, with
quality, scenic bat-prints and some colourful designs in "London"- shape
tea-wares. In 1830 the two brothers separated. William Ridgway concentrated on
the production of earthenwares. John continued the Cauldon Place Works and was
later appointed Potter of Queen Victoria, making some magnificently decorated
porcelains. Around 1833 five hundred people were employed at the pottery, and
many talented artists were engaged in production of fine painted pieces, some of
which are believed to be the work of George Speight and Daniel Lucas, known for
their landscape and figure painting. Thomas Brentnall, George Hancock, and
Joseph Bancroft have also been employed, specializing in flower painting. John
Ridgway exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and their catalogue shows the
great variety and quality of the porcelain produced by the factory at this time.
In 1856 John Ridgway & Co. gave way to Ridgway, Bates & Co., to be followed on
John's retirement in 1858 by Bates, Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co and than from
December 1861 by Brown-Westhead, More & Co., a firm that continued until 1904.

Great piece with no issues. The paint is a bisque type rather than the more common shiny painting of the era. It was painted at the factory pre firing as it survived much cleaning on my part. Well here it is! What you've always wanted but couldn't justify doing
financially or with a clear conscience. Someone did it for you about 50 years
ago. They did a good job it appears. Though I guess they had to drill the
pitcher. The pitcher is perfect otherwise with no cracks, chips, or
restorations. The bowl has a very tight crowsfoot on the base that doesn't go
through to interior. Both pieces have the expected crazing from 120 year old
earthenware. A couple worn glaze spots on rim of bowl, no chips or cracks. The
bowl is 15.75" wide, pitcher is 11.5" tall without brass hardware. Lamp and
switch work.

I'll include the shade if you want, but my main concern will be the careful
packaging of the bowl/pitcher. They will for sure reach you in the condition
they're currently in.

I believe there is a
very old professional restoration to his hat and her arm.

The pair is very heavy, 3.25 pounds.

The Chelsea porcelain manufactory (established around 1743-45) is the first
important porcelainmanufactory in England;[1] its earliest soft-paste porcelain,
aimed at the aristocratic market—cream jugs in the form of two seated goats—are
dated 1745. The entrepreneurial director was Nicholas Sprimont, a silversmith by
trade, but few documents survive to aid a picture of the manufactory's history.
Early tablewares, being produced in profusion by 1750, depend on Meissen
porcelain models and on silver prototypes, such as salt cellars in the form of
realistic shells.

Chelsea was known for its figures. From about 1760 its inspiration was drawn
more from Sèvres porcelainthan Meissen.

In 1769 the manufactory was purchased by William Duesbury, owner of the Derby
porcelain factory, and the wares are indistinguishable during the "Chelsea-Derby
period" that lasted until 1784, when the Chelsea factory was demolished and its
moulds, patterns and many of its workmen and artists transferred to Derby.

Fresh from a
local Austin TX estate, most likely made when he was teaching in TX before
moving to Silverton.

Franz Kriwanek (American, 1920-1994). artist, potter, professor and author
renown for blending clays and glazes from soils and minerals of the San Juan
Mountains near Silverton Colorado. Pottery made from these mixtures is very
durable with a distinctive allure. When Germany conquered Czechoslovakia,
Kriwanek was forcibly drafted into the German Army. He was then sent to North
Africa desert, but one morning when he and the other forced draftees awoke, they
were alone. Kriwanek was sent to the Prisoner of War Camp in Clarinda, where he,
an artist by trade, began painting again, specifically illustrations of the
camp. Once the war was over, he was released and returned to Europe, where he
lived in the Netherlands for four years. In fact, Winegardner said a family in
Shenandoah sent Kriwanek to the University of Iowa where he could obtain his
teaching degree. He then taught in Shenandoah for one year, followed by Mount
Pleasant, Iowa.

In 1948, Franz Kriwanek settled in Sweden to study Sino-Swedish stoneware under
the masters Wilhelm Koge and Stig Lindberg. While in Sweden he had 7 one man
exhibits. In 1963, He arrived in Texas, taking a position on the art faculty at
Texas Tech University. For months after he arrived in West Texas, he sought a
clay suitable to stand 2,400 degrees. He found it in a quarry in Snyder, Texas.
He believed in using local materials and developed a series of glazes which have
cotton gin ashes as they main component. These glazes follow the same traditions
of Chinese ash glazes.

“Franz Kriwanek was born on May 1, 1920 in Worschach, Austria.
Winegardner said when Germany conquered Czechoslovakia, Kriwanek was forcibly
drafted into the German Army. They had left them in the desert,” said Winegardner.
“The first thing they did was surrender.”
Kriwanek was sent to the Prisoner of War Camp in Clarinda, where he, an artist
by trade, began painting again, specifically illustrations of the camp. Once the
war was over, he was released and returned to Europe, where he lived in the
Netherlands for four years.
“Someone he knew in Clarinda sponsored him and his family to move back to
Clarinda,” Winegardner said. “He then moved to Shenandoah and started Kriwanek
Pottery and Art School. He was really promoted and supported by people in
Shenandoah.”
In fact, Winegardner said a family in Shenandoah sent Kriwanek to the University
of Iowa where he could obtain his teaching degree. He then taught in Shenandoah
for one year, followed by Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
“He ended his teaching career as chair of ceramics at the University of Texas at
Lubbock,” said Winegardner. “He ended up in Silverton, Colorado with Silverton
Mountain Pottery. He passed away in 1994, but his pieces have recently become
overly popular.”
