sz9 Benny Armijo (1937-2022) Navajo Opal ring in sterling silver. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Nice ring from the last quarter of the 20th century. Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. I believe this to be a natural Opal as Benny was very well respected and made this later in his career. He always used really high grade materials even earlier in his career. Benny Armijo (1937-2022). Benny was a renowned master Navajo silversmith who specialized in this complex inlay and "corn row" type cobblestone inlay using high quality stones. His jewelry was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and was collected by many high-profile artists from James Taylor, Charlie Daniels, to Hank Williams Jr. His pieces can be seen on many album covers of top music groups and are highly collectable today. His incredible sense of humor was as well-known as his jewelry. He was simply the most generous man that one could ever imagine, always helping complete strangers he encountered along the way. He was active from the early 70‘s until the late 20th century.. His older mark from the 1970‘s looks like a tadpole and has been misattributed to "Edward Zuni", but I‘m 100% sure this is Benny Armijo‘s work and hallmark, it‘s been confirmed by his living relatives. Benny was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico Benito M Armijo Jr The older stamp he first used was to represent the letter C and letter M which stood for Chief Marcos. Many years later maybe around 1989 he stamped his jewelry with Benny Armijo. He lived in California for many years and returned to New Mexico and passed away January 2022. He was known for his stone inlay on what he called a Hopi wedding band in which all the stones were inlaid inside the ring or bracelet. Giving the thought that the beauty between the couple is in the eye of the beholder and the couple would choose the different color of stones and their meanings to be inlaid on their wedding bands.

Allison "Snowhawk" Lee (1958 - 2022) was an award-winning Navajo artist from Mexican Springs, New Mexico. He was the third oldest of eight (four brothers and three sisters). Allison lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his three sons, Wyatt, Kyle and Trent. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping with his family. When there was a boom in Native American jewelry in the early seventies, Allison’s mother and uncle started making Squash Blossoms. At the young age of 14, Allison was asked by his mother to make a silver ring with a turquoise stone. He made the ring well and so began his interest in jewelry making. Allison graduated from Tohatchi High School, during the summers he worked at various silver shops in the Gallup area, where he perfected the methods of silversmithing from the top silversmiths in the shops. Allison began competing in juried art shows back in 1988 and continued this tradition of competition throughout his life. He received many top awards, such as: Best of Division at the Santa Fe Indian Market, the George C. West Memorial Award for Excellence in Silver Jewelry which he won three years in a row. Allison was asked to join in on making a piece for the millennium sampler concha belt along with twelve renowned Indian Market jewelers. He was very honored to be chosen to participate in this collaboration. The proceeds of this auction benefited the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA). Allison was a highly skilled and respected silversmith, loved throughout the field of Native American jewelry. Sadly, Allison passed away in June of 2022. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy lives on in his sons‘ beautiful jewelry.

Don Staats Southwestern sterling silver cobblestone inlay pendant/necklace. Solid sterling silver tested and guaranteed with weight and measurements in the pictures. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Don Staats (July 3, 1938 - June 29, 2020) was an acclaimed Arizona artist with deep creative roots. Many of his family members shared his talent; his grandfather was a potter, his grandmother a world-renowned Ukrainian folk artist, and his father a painter. Don began his career in 1958 when he opened his first art studio in Phoenix, Arizona. Since then, he has worked with many different media to hone his artistic skills and express his creative spirit. In 1962, Don moved to Los Angeles where he did freelance automotive design until he was hired by Carrol Shelby’s Cobra design group in 1963. Don worked designing signature Cobra cars until 1966 when a near-fatal car crash permanently changed his path. After a two-year recovery period, Don Staats returned to University of Minnesota and later resumed his art career in Phoenix where he reopened his studio and focussed on bronze casting, oil painting, and jewelry making. It was during this time that Don mastered his metalworking skills for which he is best known today. Don’s contemporary Southwest jewelry has been collected by art galleries, museums, and individuals since 1970. His work has been featured in numerous publications and has gained a following worldwide. Part of the appeal of Don’s artistry is his use of many rare, semiprecious gemstones, which he had been collecting for some 40 years. His love for the color, shape, and natural variations in each stone is apparent in his jewelry, which combines materials such as sugilite, coral, lapis, charoite, spiny oyster shell, and turquoise (including Orvil Jack). All of his materials are natural -- never dyed or stabilized. Don Staats hand-polished and placed each stone to create the unique, one-of-a-kind styling that classifies his work. A proud father of a son and daughter, Don lived in Cornville near Sedona, Arizona with his wife, Deborah, who is also an artist. He worked out of his home studio near Oak Creek where he gained inspiration for his artwork. Don Staats passed away on June 29, 2020 and he is greatly missed.

Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Fits up to a 7" wrist. HIS LIFE: Kirk Smith first began working with silver at around age 7 in his grandfather’s hidden workshop, that according to Smith’s interview with Perry Null Trading, “you would not see it unless you knew it was there”. His grandfather also made jewelry and Kirk used to aid him by first learning to run the bellow to heat the charcoal that would allow his grandfather to work with the silver at high temperatures, and then eventually began to work with beads and bracelets and necklaces himself. He later used these primitive skills to craft jewelry for his uncle, who would exchange clothes and shoes for his pieces. In 1972, Kirk struck out on his own, primarily working in silver cast work, until the price of silver went up in 1974 and he went to work doing different things like working in the mine or a refinery in Galveston. He returned to jewelry making in the early 1980s when his mother got sick and he desired to be nearer to her. That’s when his craft took a turn. HIS MENTORS: Of course, his grandfather was his earliest influence, and perhaps the most profound on Kirk as a person, but when it comes to his craftsmanship, the game-changer for him was his brother-in-law. Kirk’s sister was married to an artisan named Harry Morgan, a well-known name in the world of Native American jewelry. Harry was known for his intricate stamp work and the way he would style his silver to give it an antique look, believing that overly polished silver hid the detailing and the beauty of a piece. It was Harry who really taught Kirk about design and style in terms of his craft. HIS CRAFT: Kirk is probably best known for his concho belts, like the one we found in Audrey’s closet, that we thought was too beautiful not to share with y’all after being tucked away for too long. He was known for his unrelenting insistence on working his silver by hand, resulting in beautiful pieces of heavy silver and high-grade stones. In addition to concho belts, Kirk crafted gorgeous statement cuff bracelets with turquoise and red coral and some of the most striking blue lapis you’ve ever seen, as well as some rings, pendants, earrings, and even a few squash blossoms. As we mentioned, his work is highly collectible, not only because of its stunning beauty, but because sadly, there won’t be any more made; Kirk was tragically killed in 2012. HIS DEATH: On September 17, 2012, Kirk was in an altercation in a parking lot with a young man whose truck had struck Kirk’s vehicle as the man was attempting to back into a parking spot. When the driver, who was intoxicated, tried to flee the scene, Kirk jumped onto the hood of the man’s truck. When he was eventually unable to maintain his grip, Kirk was flung from the moving vehicle and suffered injuries which resulted in his death in an Albuquerque hospital a little while later. The driver did succeed in fleeing the scene, but eventually collided with another truck and a barrier on Interstate 25 and was apprehended after a violent struggle with police; he was found to have had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16, twice the legal limit. Incredibly, the driver, who was 16 at the time, was only sentenced to 90 days in a treatment center and two years probation. As you might imagine, Kirk’s surviving family does not feel that justice was done in the wake of his death, but they are carrying on his legacy in a positive way despite the circumstances.

Master Hopi Silversmith, Waterhouse Clan – Shungopavi, Second Mesa Victor Coochwytewa is widely regarded as one of the most influential Hopi silversmiths of the 20th century. A master of overlay jewelry and a pillar of his community, his work helped define the standards and aesthetics that Hopi jewelers continue to follow today. His career, which spanned more than 60 years, earned him national recognition, including being named an Arizona Indian Living Treasure in 1994. Born on June 7, 1922, in the village of Shungopavi on Second Mesa, Victor was a member of the Waterhouse Clan. He first learned the basics of silversmithing in 1940 under the guidance of Paul Saufkie. But his early career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served with distinction in the South Pacific. A member of the 167th Combat Military Police and later the 5309th Infantry Division under General Frank Merrill (Merrill’s Marauders), Victor saw heavy combat in Burma and was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbons. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Victor returned to Hopi and became one of the first students in the now-legendary Veterans’ Classes established under the G.I. Bill. Taught by Fred Kabotie and Paul Saufkie, these classes marked the beginning of a new era in Hopi silversmithing. Victor not only mastered the overlay technique but innovated within it—introducing a background texturing method inspired by leatherwork that became a defining feature of Hopi overlay jewelry. Victor‘s designs, executed in both sterling silver and gold, are known for their precision, spiritual depth, and elegant symbolism. Many of his pieces reflect Hopi traditions and cosmology, and his work has been collected by major institutions and private collectors around the world. In addition to his artistry, Victor was deeply rooted in the traditional Hopi way of life. A lifelong dry farmer, he raised corn, squash, beans, and watermelons without irrigation or chemical inputs, relying entirely on prayer, ceremony, and natural rainfall. “Jewelry is my hobby; corn is my work,” he once said with characteristic humility. He attributed the success of both his crops and his craft to blessings from the Creator. “When you pray, you should pray for all things, and in return, all things are benefited. Nothing can be accomplished without prayer.” Victor retired from silversmithing and farming in 2006 and continued to live with his family at Hopi until his passing on July 3, 2011, at the age of 89. Today, his legacy lives on in the work of his descendants and in the broader community of Hopi artists who follow the path he helped shape. His jewelry remains among the most iconic and sought-after expressions of Hopi artistry—no serious collection of Hopi overlay work is truly complete without a piece by Victor Coochwytewa.

Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. Cecil Ashley is a respected Navajo Master silversmith who signs his pieces “CA sterling”. Cecil is well known for his quality of material and meticulous workmanship in his one-of-a-kind collectible designs. He is best known for his extraordinary lapidary skills, whose signature style is creating some of the best mosaic inlay work today. Cecil worked for the Brown family, Brown’s Trading Company in Safford, Arizona in the mid-80‘s and had access to top grade Morenci turquoise, which he used to create many beautiful jewelry pieces. There he honed his craft before venturing out on his own and establishing his own studio. Most of Cecil’s pieces have a variety of colorful, inlaid materials including spiny oyster, onyx, lapis, opal and the rare Dragon Skin or Brown Spider Web turquoise. These stones are most often inlaid in asymmetrical settings. His other silverwork is classic Navajo stamp work with classically set stones.

Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. Horace Iule, Zuni Pueblo Jeweler Horace Iule learned silversmithing from his father and eventually became an expert of the casting method. He was one of the first from Zuni Pueblo to create the Knifewing God in silver. Horace began working as a silversmith in the 1930s after returning from school in Phoenix where he had studied blacksmithing. Horace Iule (1901-1978), pronounced Ai-ú-le was a third-generation silversmith. His grandfather, a man known as Sneezing Man, was identified by John Adair in his book The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths as one of the first silversmiths at Zuni Pueblo. Horace Iule also taught jewelry making at Zuni Day School, teaching and influencing a whole generation of Zuni smiths. Horace taught his son Wilbur Iule who carries on the tradition.

Hollands San Angelo #205 10k gold sterling silver rubies ranger 5/8" belt buckle set. Solid 10k gold accents on hand engraved sterling silver with factory rubies. Hollands Fine Jewelry has been a prominent contributor in the West Texas community for over 100 years. The family owned business began its story in 1918 when Chase Holland, Sr. purchased a jewelry store from Mr. C. C. McBurnett and renamed the business “Hollands Jewelry. Prior owners can, however, be traced to 1891. In addition to traditional jewelry and watches of the period, Hollands Jewelry was widely recognized for its extensive inventory of fine silver, china, and crystal. The Hollands Spur Clip was created and patented in 1936. With the country emerging from the difficult years of the Depression, Mr. Holland designed a miniature sterling silver spur tie clasp as a symbol of recognition, given to someone who had “earned their spurs. Two of these first “Spurs Clips were presented to President Franklin Roosevelt and Vice-President John Nance Garner. Over the years, many other celebrities, politicians, and dignitaries have been presented spur jewelry as gifts of both accomplishment and gratitude. The spur clip marked the genesis of Hollands Jewelrys debut into the world of jewelry manufacturing, specializing in hand-crafted buckles, spur jewelry items, and a variety of other hand-made, hand-engraved specialty pieces, many of which are still in production. The family owned business grew quickly. Chase Hollands son, Chase, Jr. began his work in the business after completing his service in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Chase Jr., with his wife Virginia, began management of the company in 1960. Many of our clients still remember working with Mrs. Virginia, who was a major staple in the community. With the help of the store manager Mr. George McCormack, and her two sons Chase III and Bill, the company grew into the successful establishment that it is today. Brant Horner of Brownwood, TX joined the company in 1985. After graduating with an accounting degree from Angelo State University, he continued to progress at Hollands Jewelry and quickly worked his way to Master Jeweler. Aside from his fine craftsmanship as a jeweler, Brant brought a new age of tailored jewelry making to Hollands. He specializes in die making, hand carving and modern rapid prototyping for custom jewelry, stone setting, and hand engraving. In 2012, Brant became business partners with the Holland brothers. After celebrating the 100th year for the company, Bill Holland joined Chase Holland III in retirement and Brant Horner took over ownership and management of the company. The family operated tradition continues with Brant Horner and his daughter, Evyn Horner Higgins, who began working at Hollands in 2011. Hollands Jewelry is a member of The American Gem Society, Jewelers of America, Jewelers Vigilance Committee, Better Business Bureau, and many other trade organizations.
