Regardless of what mine it is from, it‘s high grade and rare turquoise. One of the side stones has an old fracture, but is secure in it‘s bezel. Only markings are what I believe to be a C.G. Wallace pricing code on the back.

c1950 Lambert Homer Sr. Zuni Blue Gem Turquoise flush inlay sterling silver screw back earrings. Circa second quarter of the 20th century to mid 20th century, large and unique with high grade turquoise.  Unmarked, attributed. Homer, Lambert Sr. Biography (1917-1972)Widely recognized as a fine lapidarist, Lambert Homer collaborated with other artists who worked with trader C. G. Wallace. He is perhaps best known for pieces featuring intricate mosaic inlay on spiny oyster shell that closely resemble shell inlay work found at prehistoric Southwestern sites. After removing the spines from these distinctively coral-colored shells, Homer inlaid them with white shell, turquoise and jet, creating vibrant geometric patterns. Some of his most spectacular pieces are belts with conchas of inlaid spiny oyster shell. Homer also made inlaid Knife Wings and Rainbow Gods, and he is credited with the first use of the Gan dancer as a jewelry design motif. 

Zuni artists with whom Lambert Homer collaborated include Dan Simplicio, Leo Poblano, Ida Poblano, and his son Lambert Homer, Jr. He also worked with Navajo silver-workers Roger Skeet and Charlie Bitsui. Lambert, who was married to Juanita Homer, and his brother Bernard, who was married to Alice Homer, worked closely with their wives, both of whom were daughters of Leekya.

This artform use to be very popular and is one of the earliest forms of Navajo silversmithing. Its interesting that his last name "Platero" means "silversmith" in Spanish. This might suggest that this award winning third-generation jeweler‘s artistic roots might very well extend beyond his grandparents‘ time to the era of Spanish occupation of New Mexico. The appropriateness of the surname is seen in every meticulous detail of Don Plateros silverwork. The winner of numerous awards, including a first-place ribbon at the Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial, Don Platero has been working as a silversmith since he was ten years old. He learned the craft from his father, Dan Platero. During school summers, his father would encourage him to assist in polishing and finishing pieces. Don would ask him questions of different techniques that were used from school and techniques that he had never seen before while ‘secretly working on his own work. During his sophomore year in high school there was a class with a last slot for the “Navajo Silversmith course. Fortunately, the slot became his. During high school he entered the Gallup Indian Ceremonial and that brought the first 1st place ribbon and cash award. This was the first of many awards.

Appears unworn Below is the Artists Bio A family heritage six generations in the making... I am a sixth generation Navajo silversmith born and raised in the great state of New Mexico. My maternal clan is Ts‘ah Yask‘idnii (Sagebrush Hill) with my paternal clan being Dibe Lizhini (Black Sheep). I‘m originally from Crownpoint, currently residing in Rio Rancho with my beautiful wife Melvina and our two lovely daughters. JDM_2021_HGIF&M (3).JPG My third Great-Grandfather, Gray Horse was the first silversmith in our family. His son, my second Great-Grandfather Big Horse followed suit. His daughter, my Great-Grandmother Nosbah and her husband Cutnose Charley, were third generation smiths. Fourth in line was my amazing Grandmother Louise Charley Morgan, whom my dad Harry Morgan credited as the sole inspiration for his style of jewelry making. It was a style that focused heavily on sandcasting and stamp work. Turquoise was used mostly in freeform settings which gave the pieces a beautiful balance. Although I came from a long line of silversmiths, I really had no inclination to follow in their footsteps. That changed during a golfing trip in 2005. My oldest brother Kelly encouraged me to take up silversmithing to help continue on our long standing family tradition. Shortly after I built a wooden bench out of scrap lumber, began purchasing jewelry making tools and started practicing with copper. One year later, with the guidance from my dad, my first silver project making rings and bracelets was underway. Sadly, he passed away in 2007 leaving me with the difficult but rewarding task of learning by trial and error. In 2009 I participated in my first major art show at the prestigious Santa Fe Indian Market, winning a First Place ribbon for a sterling silver jewelry box. The following year I made another jewelry box that was awarded an Honorable Mention ribbon at the Heard Guild Indian Fair & Market in Phoenix, AZ. I‘ve been fortunate enough to attend both ever since. In doing so, there have been many valuable lessons and experiences gained by participating in them. The summer of 2016 was definitely a highlight as I had the incredible experience of creating several custom made pieces for UFC legend, Cowboy Cerrone and his coaching staff. I strive to make unique, one of a kind jewelry. Whether its fabricating with commercial sheet and wire or casting and forging them by hand, the desire to create legacy art is a true passion. Honoring our elder‘s contributions while setting a path for future generations is a rewarding and worthwhile responsibility. Being a Navajo silversmith is an absolute honor and privilege. I was told this was purchased in the 1970‘s for 6k. I didn‘t really know what to think about that until I saw this in person. Now I believe it, they may have the timing off, maybe not. There are not but a few Southwestern silversmiths capable of executing something like this today and they would charge well over 10k for something this heavy and well executed. A lot of time, skill, and materials went into this belt. Tom Dewitt (American, b.1947-2021) Anglo Santa Fe artist Tom Dewitt is known for creating “old style silver pieces. He is inspired by silverwork from the 1880s-1940s. Toms work regularly is mistaken for being much older than it is. Tom has been creating retro-style jewelry for over four decades and his work is represented in galleries around the country. THOMAS DEWITT OBITUARY THOMAS O‘DELL DEWITT Thomas O‘Dell DeWitt known as Dewey, passed away at home in Santa Fe on June 10 after a hard battle with cancer. His son Matthew DeWitt had been by his side for 24 days. Tom was known for the beautiful silver jewelry and art that he made, the "gift of gab," original one-liners, his generosity, loving nature, and his positive attitude from his Christian Science upbringing. Tom was born in Michigan and raised in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Venice High in 1965. He began his silver- smith career directly after school while also working as a lighting technician for major venues in L.A. during the wave of the 1960‘s psychedelic rock & roll concerts. He eventually landed a job with Fox Studios working as an electrician for long-running TV series‘ such as M.A.S.H., Dragnet, The Love Boat, and others. He also worked on some big films; The Doors, Lonesome Dove, Natural Born Killers, The Missing, and others. He made frequent trips to Santa Fe starting when he was 21 to buy and sell jewelry, trade and pick up tools. He made New Mexico his home in the 1970s settling in Pojoaque as a silversmith also returning to L.A. for work in the movie and TV business. He was one of the original "Anglo Silversmiths" in New Mexico and a trader. He called his jewelry "old pawn while you wait" because it looked like the old Native American jewelry found in pawn shops. He had a special relationship with the Zuni Pueblo and revered the culture and artistic styles of the Native American silversmiths and artisans. He sold to major galleries in Santa Fe and had a line with Ralph Lauren in the early 2000s. He was extremely talented and people from all over the world collected his work. Tom was a silversmith for 52 years making over 20,000 pieces of southwestern and cowboy style jewelry and art. He met and married his second wife Frances Sayre in Pecos in 1994 and had a son, Matthew DeWitt. He also took under his wing, Frances‘ son, William McLean. Although the marriage did not last they continued to raise the boys together and remain friends. Tom is survived by his son Matthew DeWitt of Santa Fe, stepson William McLean of Medford, OR, and niece Laurie DeWitt of Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by his mother Virginia DeWitt, CSP and his father Edgar Beverly DeWitt.
