She learned to make<br>traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during<br>the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught<br>her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni<br>trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her<br>own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers.<br>“There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she<br>said.<br><br>The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of<br>their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her<br>jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed,<br>natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished<br>turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to<br>their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.<br><br>Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to<br>do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. It wasn’t<br>the designs they were talking about, it was the technical aspects of our work:<br>setting stones, welds, engravings and so on. Ray Tracey Knifewing Navajo Sterling Turquoise, coral, and lapis cuff bracelet<br>13mm wide with no issues.<br><br>Artist Ray Tracey has had a life-long love of jewelry. As a child growing up in<br>Sawmill, AZ, Asa Tracey, his Grandfather, influenced him with his stories of<br>working the goat bellows for his uncle. Asa would pump the goat bellows all day<br>long to fuel the fire in the forge that would melt silver in a small cast iron<br>crucible. This process was very labor intensive and his grandfather hated it.<br>The molten silver would then be poured into a tufa stone mold to form an ingot.<br>The jeweler would then execute his craft and a new piece of jewelry would be<br>created.<br><br>“I wanted to see finished jewelry and wanted to learn everything I could.<br>Whenever we would go to Gallup, NM, I would visit curio stores to see creations<br>in silver.” Ray spent time viewing jewelry designs at the Gallup Intertribal<br>Indian Ceremonial and at the Navajo Nation Fair. Anywhere, there was jewelry on<br>display; Ray could be seen viewing the works of art.<br><br>Ray’s family moved to Ganado, AZ when he was six years old. One summer day when<br>he was nine years old, he complained to his mother of how bored he was. The next<br>day his mother enrolled him into summer school and changed his life forever. He<br>went straight to art class and found a silver smithing table in the corner. He<br>remembered his grandfather’s stories and the rest is history.<br><br>“In class I fabricated my first ring out of silver for my Mother. I found an<br>unknown stone and made a cabochon. I tried to copy an old style ring design that<br>I had seen at Hubbells Trading Post. One teardrop flanked the sides of the<br>stone. It was a very simple design but it took me a week to finish. I kept<br>melting the silver. I made my next silver and stone creation at the age of 21<br>and gave it to my mother. It was another ring, but this time it was a split<br>shank with three ribs and three tear drops on the side of the stone.” I told my<br>father, I want to make jewelry for the rest of my life.”<br><br>Ray continued making jewelry while attending Brigham Young University. Studying<br>chemistry and physics by day and making jewelry at night. “The designs were<br>simple, my first love was Old Style Navajo jewelry. Weekends were spent<br>traveling to Gallup, NM, to sell his work. While at BYU another opportunity<br>arose to express his creativity—acting. “I wasn’t a very good student so<br>Hollywood had an instant appeal. My gift of creativity carried over into acting.<br>Acting was just another outlet of creative expression.” His adventurous nature<br>allowed Ray to spend several years as an actor in feature films and television.<br>This acting detour never made him lose interest in jewelry design. Eventually,<br>Ray’s love of jewelry brought him back to New Mexico to permanently pursue this<br>art form.<br><br>“One time while traveling to Albuquerque from Gallup, I noticed the horizon over<br>Laa Pueblo. I saw steps on a mesa. I incorporated this imagery of tiered steps<br>into a bracelet design.”<br><br>“Another time, while golfing at Hobble Creek Golf Course, I saw pebbles aligned<br>in a row on the river bottom. Those pebbles became my inspiration to place them<br>on the sides of an inlaid bracelet.”<br><br>“Sometimes my creativity comes to a screeching halt. 7.25" Vintage Wilson Begay silver and turquoise cuff bracelet. 60mm wide in<br>center tapering down at ends.<br><br>Wilson and Carol Begay are traditional Navajo silversmiths. These talented<br>silversmiths have been creating traditional Navajo jewelry since 1969. They came<br>from families well known for their jewelry making. Wilson’s father, Luke, taught<br>John Adair, author of “Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths” how to make sand cast<br>jewelry. He worked for many years with Mike and Dean Kirk, at the famous Kirk<br>Brothers Trading Company in Gallup, New Mexico.<br><br>Carol’s parents, Angela and Allen Chee were both silversmiths who worked by C.G.<br>Wallace, the famous jewelry trader from Zuni, New Mexico.<br><br>The Begays began their career making sandcast jewelry, a traditional type of<br>Navajo jewelry that requires the artist to make carvings in Tufa stone to make<br>forms to shape molten silver. They first worked for Tobe Tupen, a well known<br>trader in Gallup. Carol remembers that silver was only $1.25 an ounce when they<br>started.<br><br>Today they are independent artists whose work is widely sought after and<br>admired. Wilson concentrates on the casting and building the foundations of the<br>jewelry and Carol sets the stones and does the finishing work. They work<br>together to design their jewelry.<br><br>Traditional sandcast silver jewelry is a unique Navajo art form. The process,<br>although it sounds simple, requires careful discipline and years of practice to<br>obtain quality results.<br><br>The artist takes two pieces of pumice stone and grinds them together to create<br>two flat surfaces. Then the design is carved into one of the two pumice stones.<br>An opening is carved from the design to the top and bottom of the stone. The two<br>pieces of stone are then tied together so that the carved design is between the<br>two flat areas. Silver is then melted in a crucible, and when it reaches the<br>proper molten form, it is poured into the opening on the top of the design. If<br>it is the proper temperature, it flows through to the bottom where it cools and<br>hardens, filling the design space. After cooling, the stones are separated, the<br>casting removed and the protrusions on the top and bottom are cut off. The<br>silver is then filed smooth and shaped.<br><br>If stones are to be set on the piece, the artist builds a silver bezel to hold<br>the stone and then solders it to the piece of jewelry. Sawdust is put in the<br>bottom of the bezel to cushion the stone and the bezel is tightened. The piece<br>is then polished to the shine the artist likes.<br><br>Wilson Begay of Gallup is the acknowledged master of the art of sandcast<br>jewelry. Luke Begay, Wilson's grandfather, demonstrated this skill to John Adair<br>in the early 1930's when Adair was conducting a survey of native silversmiths of<br>the Smithsonian. Luke taught the skill to Wilson as a young man. Today, in his<br>60's, Wilson continues to make sandcast jewelry in his Gallup home. His wife,<br>Carol, chooses the stones to be used and sets them in bezels. The Begays have<br>three daughters, Nichole, Yvonne and Bonnie, are continuing the family<br>tradition.<br><br>Wilson's stamped signature is a flat brimmed Navajo hat with his initials under<br>it. His signature is one of the most recognized in Indian jewelry.
