Part Apache and part German, artist Marc Antia is a self-taught silversmith that has being making jewelry for decades. When he isn’t masterfully working on new pieces, he travels across the United States to display his work at Native American jewelry and craft shows. Marc has created a following for his elaborate stamped jewelry. He often combines sterling silver and 14k gold to make pendants, rings, and cuffs. Despite the formality presented by his use of gold in Marc’s jewelry, the durability of his pieces is apparent; upon wearing, one immediately knows this is something that can take the abuse of a daily wear. And yet, they are surprisingly lightweight. One well-versed in Native American jewelry might notice that the traditional Navajo stamp style seen in Marc’s jewelry is liken to a fellow Native American artist’s work: Emerson Bill. This is no coincidence, as both artists learned the ways of their trade together. This occurred in their salad days, and they grew to be close friends. Vintage Santo Domingo turquoise and shell Jaclas. Great with natural stones/shell from the third quarter of the 20th century, no damage or wear. 23 grams. Approx 5.5" long as shown in the pics. A traditional Pueblo jewelry adornment, a jacla is two loops of heishi that were originally earrings and sometimes fastened to the bottom of a stone necklace as a pendant-like attachment. Jacla is Navajo for “ear string”. The Navajo spelling is the most commonly used version of the word. Jocla is also common but jackla is a phonetic mis-spelling. Although jaclas are attributed to the Rio Grande Pueblo Indians, they were traded with other tribes so have become associated with the Navajo as well. They are seen in vintage photos being worn by members of all southwest tribes, both men and women. In the oldest style necklaces, the jacla is a pair of loop earrings tied onto the necklace.

Very solid for it's size, 18mm wide. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallace’s trading post and collaborated with amazing Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie. By the time he was 12, his father had enrolled him in an adult<br>art class in a college in Cincinnati. “The war was going on and those small<br>colleges needed all the students they could get, so they agreed to take me. I<br>got a lot of special attention from the teachers. It was great,” he<br>recalled.After graduating from Terrace Park High School in Cincinnati in 1948,<br>Fritz played semi-pro football. Carrying those lessons forward, he later coached<br>junior high football and was fondly known as Coach Whitey.Fritz proudly served<br>in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1948 to 1953 as Sergeant of a rifle platoon and<br>later as a Gunny. Following his service, Fritz launched Fancy Lettering, a<br>design studio for sales publications, and subsequently took a position with<br>National Underwriter Company. On a whim in 1961, he loaded up his car with large<br>chunks of marble from Marble, Colorado and thus began his long career in<br>sculpture. Thanks to the support of his dear friend John J. McGraw, Fritz was<br>soon working in clay and bronze.A decade later, in the spring of 1972, Fritz was<br>elected to the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America and became widely accepted<br>as one of the finest sculptors of this century. In addition to winning several<br>CAA awards for excellence (including the only sculptor to win the Colt Award),<br>he served as board member, vice president and president. He was also a Fellow of<br>the National Sculpture Society.

Malcolm Furlow Cut Steel 3 Dimensional Pop Art Sculpture of Native American Man.<br>Measures 21.5" tall x 17.5"wide x 8" deep with , weighs 20 pounds. Fresh from a<br>local estate along with a painting on canvas by the same artist. Guaranteed<br>authentic. This had to be extremely labor intensive and would stand out<br>anywhere, he did do much of this type of work. Malcolm Attended University of<br>Texas here in Austin and Studied art. This piece came from Austin, I believe it<br>is one of his earlier pieces when he was still trying to figure out what<br>direction to take his career, obciously it is super cool.<br><br>The comes out and will be removed for shipping. The paint is very sturdy, I<br>believe it is a special metal paint similar to auto paint but it will be well<br>wrapped to prevent abrasion or wear during transportation.<br><br>Taos resident, Malcolm Furlow, an award winning painter, hasn't always been an<br>artist. As a young man he received a track scholarship to the University of<br>Texas and decided to choose art as his major. Unfortunately, his art professor<br>disapproved of his style of painting and a disappointed Furlow left college to<br>become a rock and roll musician. For 18 years he played the sax, bass and<br>sometimes the guitar, playing back up for such notable groups and soloists as<br>the Beach Boys and Lou Rawls.<br><br>Leaving his music career behind, Furlow used his artistic talent to construct<br>models for movie sets at Walt Disney Studios. He also delved into photography,<br>writing a book for Kodak, called Close-Up Photography, that explained the best<br>way to photograph miniatures, especially models. But, in 1987 after hearing<br>scholar Joseph Campbell's words "Follow Your Bliss," Furlow decided to go back<br>to his first love, painting.<br><br>Furlow began drawing American Indians at the age of six, when his father had<br>Malcolm accompany him on business trips throughout New Mexico. Beginning with<br>watercolors, Furlow realized the medium was ill suited for large canvases and<br>switched to brightly colored acrylic images of Native Americans. In all his<br>works, Furlow strives to show his deep admiration and respect for his Choctaw<br>heritage.<br><br>About his subject matter and painting style, Furlow has said, "I knew I wanted<br>to say it with color because that's the emotion of it. I've got to make the<br>viewer feel what I feel . All I'm trying to do is paint them as they are - paint<br>their culture, their dignity and their stature . I didn't want to do portraits<br>of Indians, I wanted to say something about the human condition." He paints two<br>worlds: the Native American and their place in the Anglo World. In addition,<br>Furlow rides and decorates motorcycles.<br><br>A recently filmed documentary entitled the "Life and Art of Malcolm Furlow,<br>"refers to him as a "Renaissance Man": the quintessential cowboy, musician, and<br>intellectual artist. He is an award-winning painter, whose accolades include the<br>Silver award from the Sorbonne, and the highly coveted Gold Award from the<br>world-renown Luxembourg Museum, Paris. PBS featured him in a documentary called<br>"The Life and Art of Malcolm Furlow", he was also awarded the Gold Award from<br>the Luxembourg in Paris (an honor shared with Pablo Picasso)<br><br>As of spring 2007, Furlow has "sold-out" over fifty solo shows.
