Early Native American Beaded Amulet/points/large necklace beads. I'm assuming<br>these beads went on a necklace and this pendant hung on that and that it was<br>sometime in the 19th century. I found this pile together in a small box in a<br>drawer of a local estate I purchased the entire contents of years ago. The<br>pendant is 3 3/8" wide and oobviously missing some of the outer beads which<br>appear to be shell or seeds of some sort. The points are high quality, sharp and<br>thin. PAUL LIVINGSTON Paul Livingston was born in 1954 and has spent his entire life on the Navajo Church Rock Reservation, where he grew up watching with fascination as his silversmith Uncle crafted raw metal and stone into beautiful jewelry. 1970's Justin Morris Navajo Sterling Turquoise and coral pendant/necklace. 24"<br>necklace, 3" x 2.25" pendant all with no issues. 74.8 grams total.<br><br>Silversmiths Justin and Irene Morris began making jewelry over 50 years ago. At<br>that particular time in American History many Native Americans were turning to<br>art to bring in extra income to support their families (particularly those<br>without college educations); he got the idea from his Grandpa Bitchittti. Not<br>surprisingly, Grandpa proved to be right. In the mid sixties, Southwestern<br>Indian jewelry started to make its way into mainstream America, finding its way<br>across Sacs of Fifth Avenue Catalogs to featured articles in Arizona Highways.<br>Before Justin decided to take up silver, he was a instructional aide for the<br>Government at Dilcon Boarding School. Morris recalls Grandpa looking out for the<br>livelihood of the family and notes, "the idea (for me to become a silversmith)<br>was all Grandpa's...the learning (however) was all self-taught."<br><br>Over the next few years, Morris began to learn and refine the skilled trait of<br>not only fabricating jewelry from sheets of silver and turquoise but also<br>learned the art of marketing. He managed to establish--over the course of 50<br>years--a clientele that spanned from as close as Sedona, Arizona to as far away<br>as Frankfort, Germany. Also over the next few years would come Justin and<br>Irene's children, Charles, Luskey, Calamity, and Keturah who would also take up<br>silversmithing. Today, the business is a family affair and Justin accredits his<br>success to his children's participation in the business and the support of his<br>wife Irene, "(Everyone) They all helped out in the shop, (the children) ever<br>since they were small...working together has brought us closer together." And<br>from the looks of it has kept them together as well.<br><br>Being in the business for over 50 years hasn't however been without its hard<br>times. The Morrises, for business proposes, decided rather than continue to<br>wholesale to retailers to take the business directly to his customers through a<br>market place venue. In the early 90's Justin and his family decided to start to<br>explore these markets. The bonus of exploring markets provided the Morrises with<br>the opportunity that they very rarely had--to meet collectors of his jewelry.<br>These markets also allowed the Morris name to take their business to a wider<br>range of customers, enabling them to hone business according to their customer's<br>needs.<br><br>Over the past years Morris has been able to instinctively, wield his business<br>according to seasons and market places which at times--the family unanimously<br>have admitted--have been a hard study. Surprisingly, the heard times, the<br>Morrises admit, are what measure the high points, which for them were building<br>the family business name. And even in the dreariest of times, which Morrises<br>have confessed their share, they comment, "you keep your mind on the Creator,<br>and keep laughter close." The both of which have propelled his business forward<br>in to the unknown. Today they, the Morrises, together, continue to forge into<br>unknowable.

He likes to incorporate humor into his work, as can be seen in his<br>wonderful lizard pins that are designed to perch on the wearer's shoulder, one<br>of his unique designs.<br><br>Growing up in Albuquerque, away from his father's Zuni Pueblo and his mother's<br>Jicarilla Apache Reservation, Allenroy was not always interested in his native<br>heritage, much less in making jewelry. In high school, he became interested in<br>fancy dancing, one of his favorite activities through today. At this same time,<br>his father took up jewelry making to support their family after being disabled<br>in an accident, but it still did not interest Allenroy. Instead, he earned a<br>degree in technical engineering. It was not until his father died several years<br>later, when his mother gave him his father's tools, that Allenroy realized this<br>was his inheritance and heritage. Today he considers his father to be his<br>strongest inspiration.<br><br>This feeling was reinforced one time when he was having a creative block. He<br>found a lizard in a shed he was cleaning, and was captivated by its colors and<br>shapes. "It was like someone told me, 'make inlay lizard jewelry.' I felt it was<br>my dad telling me to do that." It seemed logical after that to move on to<br>turtles and frogs.<br><br>Allenroy is interested in educating as well. His sons, Ignacio and Kyle, have<br>already started making jewelry, and have won awards for their work. Allenroy<br>also teaches school children about native heritage, trying to break down the<br>image of the "stereotypical Hollywood Indian." He performs a solo show that<br>incorporates storytelling, dancing and flute playing at schools. He would also<br>like to "be an inspiration to native urban Indians who have lost their<br>connection with their reservation or their native ties -- to help them find<br>there is something to connect them to that world."

Doug Nava Taos/Apache Sterling silver multistone Channel inlay Necklace.<br>Approximately 17" total length, unmarked other than Nava's hallmark, tests<br>sterling. Composed of a large Central amethyst, Charoite, Spiny oyster shell,<br>and Opal. 44.9 grams.<br><br>Doug Nava was born and grew up in Southwest Colorado. His father was Apache and<br>his grandfather(mother’s father) was a Taos Indian. Doug’s grandfather’s name<br>was on the list of students at St. John’s school in Taos.<br><br>Doug went to college in Gunnison in Western Colorado. He earned a degree in art<br>and was also self taught as he went along. His wife, Elizabeth, also has an art<br>degree. One year after graduation, Doug bought Bennett’s Indian and Lapidary. He<br>made jewelry and sold it in his shop. His jewelry has evolved over the years<br>from Navajo style to fine inlay work. Ernest Bilagody Sr. Navajo Sterling and Royston Turquoise Pendant, Weight:66.9<br>Grams, | 3.75" tall x 2.25" wide.<br><br>Ernest Thomas Bilay (ETB)<br><br>Earnest Thomas Bilay (ETB) was born in Tuba City, Arizona to the Red House Big<br>Water Clan and has been immersed in his trade for the better part of his life.<br>His grandparents are from the Around the House Clan and the Bitter Water Clan.<br>This craftsman was guided by his mother early on and continued those traditions<br>into his adult years. He worked as a silversmith for over 35 years, since the<br>mid 1970’s, until his passing in 2014.<br><br>His mother started him out with buffing the earrings she made. From there she<br>gave him other duties, such as soldering things for her. With this beginning,<br>Ernest started making his own jewelry, and he did not ever look back. He<br>continued those traditions into his adult years.<br><br>Ernest worked out of his own home, and worked for various traders. Along the way<br>he met many other silver and goldsmiths, and he always enjoyed sharing stories<br>about the metals, turquoises and other materials they use.

Charles has worked full-time as a silversmith since<br>the age of 20. He first started inlaying at the age of 13 for a few years while<br>learning both.Starting with traditional Navajo jewelry, Charles then went into<br>Navajo contemporary jewelry, then onto the Western style with swirl design<br>cutouts. Nice vintage adjustable drop necklace with no significant issues. Up to 20" long, center drop pendant is 1.5" long. 42.5 grams. Carlos’ career as a jeweler began in the 1970’s, inspired by his mother, who was an artist of Ottawa/ Chippewa descent. He is completely self-taught. Unlike many jewelers, he is both a lapidary and a silversmith, and fabricates all of his jewelry by himself. Nothing is cast or manufactured. He is an Elder in the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, but also considers himself part of God’s Universal Family. His greatest pride comes from his work with animals and caring for the land. “I am doubly blessed. Great with natural<br>stones/shell from the third quarter of the 20th century, no damage or wear. 47.8<br>grams<br><br>A traditional Pueblo jewelry adornment, a jacla is two loops of heishi that were<br>originally earrings and sometimes fastened to the bottom of a stone necklace as<br>a pendant-like attachment.<br><br>Jacla is Navajo for “ear string”. The Navajo spelling is the most commonly used<br>version of the word. Jocla is also common but jackla is a phonetic mis-spelling.<br>Although jaclas are attributed to the Rio Grande Pueblo Indians, they were<br>traded with other tribes so have become associated with the Navajo as well. They<br>are seen in vintage photos being worn by members of all southwest tribes, both<br>men and women.<br><br>In the oldest style necklaces, the jacla is a pair of loop earrings tied onto<br>the necklace.
