Roie was born of three Native American Indian tribes: Pueblo of Laa Acoma, Chiricahua Apache, and Navajo. He was brought up as Navajo and in the ways of the Navajo cultures. His father Tse nahabilnii, is Navajo, while Roie's paternal grandparent, Chishi, is Chiricahua Apache. Roie's mother, is Naatsedlozii (Road runner of Laa Acoma) Her parents Haak'ohnii (Laa Acoma). Roie speaks, reads, and writs the Navajo language, and is enrolled with the Navajo tribe in window rock, Arizona. After high school and college/university in Nw Mexico and Arizona, Roie worked as a summer aide in Albuqueque, NM. He also worked on the Apache County Road Department, National Forest, Ramah Navajo School at Pine Hill, NM, and is currently employed by Circle J.W. Products. "I learned how to silversmith at an early age and have been silversmithing for over 45 years. I have also learned the art of Navajo rug weaving, using the raw materials from my own sheep. 1920's 14" Wachenheimer Art Deco Sterling and blue jasper choker. 14" long x .75" wide x 29.2 grams with no apparent issues. The first Wachenheimer factory was located in downtown Providence and had 18 employees. Harry ran the operations, and Jacob and Samuel remained in New York with responsibility for sales. By 1908, the company employed about 30 workers and moved to the fourth floor of 36 Garnet Street, in the jewelry-manufacturing district of the city. Late in 1919, the brothers incorporated the firm along with John R. Rosenfeld, a Providence lawyer who had been associated with gemstone dealers earlier in his career. By the following year, Wachenheimer Brothers had grown to 76 employees, had opened a showroom at 303 Fifth Avenue in New York City, and had registered several patents and trademarks. They ceased operation around 1934 due to the Depression.

Lisa D'Agostino 18k/Sterling modernist earrings 10-11mm square, high quality<br>workmanship and design. No backs included, no other issues. 5.2 grams.For Lisa,<br>working with her hands has been the only thing that has ever really interested<br>her. Her curiosity about the potential for designing and creating with metal has<br>lasted since 1980. That year she participated in her first art fair. The shows<br>were local at first, but gradually developed into national venues that included<br>galleries as well. Except for an additional 12-year foray into baskets (see "The<br>Basketmaker's Art", Lark Publications) her focus has been on jewelry.The designs<br>have evolved over the years but the inspirations have remained the same. Lisa's<br>pieces are informed by geometry and architecture but tempered by the poetic and<br>philosophical aspects presented by astronomy. She ponders a phrase from an old<br>sixties song... "we are stardust - billion year old carbon."The work begins with<br>a loose drawing until a new solution or idea presents itself. It is a balance<br>between intention/chance and spontaneity/deliberation. The contours and forms<br>are simple at first. She likes the rigor and order of basic geometric shapes but<br>then organizing them into something more complex. Shapes are cut out of sterling<br>silver and formed or scored and soldered together. Other parts are distorted<br>through the rolling mill. Surfaces are textured with files or hammers or fused<br>with silver dust or 18K yellow gold. Many techniques may be incorporated into<br>one piece using a variety of hand tools, some of which are her oldest<br>buddies.The final steps involve patination of the piece, and then selectively<br>removing some of the patina to leave combinations of matte or polished surface<br>areas. Earthy rough stones and lustrous pearls are used to further enhance the<br>piece.Lisa was formally introduced to art at college. She earned a Bachelor of<br>Fine Arts degree at Bowling Green State University in 1977, but never really<br>learned to solder well until she was able to work in her own studio. She went<br>back to school, and after 3 years she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from<br>the University of Kansas in 1991. He<br>went to high school in Chinle, the town at the mouth of the legendary Canyon de<br>Chelly—a stronghold for 19th century Navajo, known then as the “Lords of the<br>Land”. Steeped in mythology, this landscape echoes the strength and beauty in<br>the Navajo bedrock of beliefs—foremost of those is responsibility to family and<br>clan. A husband, father, and grandfather, Tommy is also a world-renowned gold<br>and silversmith, his award-winning pieces on exhibit in museums and treasured in<br>collections around the world. As a premier Navajo Silversmith he counted amongst<br>those few known as “The Supersmiths.” Jackson started silversmithing in 1973,<br>learning at the bench of his parents, renowned silversmiths Gene and Martha<br>Jackson. The simple<br>elegance of his works and their emphasis on fine craftsmanship, hallmarks of<br>Jensen’s products, are recognized around the world.<br><br>Jensen was apprenticed to a goldsmith at age 14. The shepherdess moves along her sheep and goat in this hallmarked cuff by the master of pictorial silverwork.Clarence LeeNavajo SilversmithBorn in 1952 in Ft. Defiance, AZ, Clarence Lee was the second oldest of six children. His parents, Tom and Emma Rose Lee raised their children in Twin Lakes, NM. Currently, all his siblings work with silver to one degree or another with the exception of a sister who works in the health care system.Clarence learned his craft from his late father Tom Lee who built and owned a Trading Post in Twin Lakes and learned how to make silver jewelry to supplement his income when business at the Trading Post was slow. Tom Lee fought in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, was a POW for four years and a survivor of the infamous “Death March of Bataan.” He later became New Mexico’s first Native American State Senator. Clarence’s mother, Emma was recognized in her own right as the maker of the first Navajo Nation Flag.Clarence discovered his love of art work in elementary school when a teacher saw promise and encouraged him to pursue his talent. Later on at Tohatchi High School in New Mexico he met his first real art teacher Mrs. Hale. Clarence favored his art classes over academic classes because he suffered from dyslexia. In school he made metal sculptures and worked in oil and watercolors. (Clarence still paints occasionally.)Mrs. Hale also saw potential yet admonished him, “Don’t start giving stuff away.” Her comments did not discourage him and while he was still in high school continued selling his jewelry to teachers. In addition to his art, Clarence was interested in rodeo and participated in calf and team roping events. Throughout his high school years, Clarence continues to help his father sell traditional jewelry. When financial pressures grew Clarence left school just short of his high school graduation to support his family.His first pieces of silver work were traditional hammering and stamp work set with stones. Clarence developed his own unique style almost by accident when he shaped a piece of silver resembling a dog. “I did that for eight months and sort of fell over backwards into storyteller style. I made my first bracelet and pin. I didn’t set any stones in my work until later.”His ideas come from his childhood memories of summers spent with his great grandmother at her summer home in the mountains. He remembers herding sheep and cattle near his home with friends and relatives. Images of windmills, water barrels, old trucks, wood stoves, dogs and rabbits are reflected in his artwork today. Along the way he has added whimsical animals, cowboys, dancers, children and many other images to his collection.Clarence prefers to sell his jewelry at Indian shows and present his work in competitions and exhibitions. HIs first show was at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. In early years he struggled to make a name in the art world and support his family. Fortunately, the first few shows provided the emerging silversmith encouragement. “I got a good response and it just opened up from there.”His first competitive show was at the Navajo Nation Fair where his work garnered a first place ribbon in 1977. “ I started signing using an engraver at the beginning, using my family’s registered brand stamp. Using the brand was my dad’s idea, but by 1988 I added my own signature.”In 1976, Clarence married and later that year his son Russell was born. By 1980 Clarence was a divorced single parent raising his four year old son and began taking his son along to all his shows.“When Russell was about ten or so he wanted a toy he saw at the mall. I told him you have to earn it by selling something first.” From there Russell was encouraged to try his hand as a silversmith. Russell followed his father’s footsteps and eventually entered various junior competitions winning numerous awards for his work. Russell hoped to go to college after he graduated from high school but during his senior year Russell’s responsibilities in the family jewelry business began to rapidly grow. Russell postponed his college plans to tend the family business, a business that has not slowed down since. Now as an adult, Russell helps full time with the jewelry business work. An apprentice and talented artist in his own right, Russell fashions most of the tiny figures his father incorporates into his storyteller images.Three museums currently display pieces made by Clarence and Russell. You can see a bracelet on display at the San Diego Museum of Man in San Diego, California. In June 2006, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, Indiana purchased the 3-D card holder, “Mr. Yazzie goes to town” that will remain in their permanent collection. Part Apache and part German, artist Marc Antia is a self-taught silversmith that has being making jewelry for decades. When he isn’t masterfully working on new pieces, he travels across the United States to display his work at Native American jewelry and craft shows. Marc has created a following for his elaborate stamped jewelry. He often combines sterling silver and 14k gold to make pendants, rings, and cuffs. Despite the formality presented by his use of gold in Marc’s jewelry, the durability of his pieces is apparent; upon wearing, one immediately knows this is something that can take the abuse of a daily wear. And yet, they are surprisingly lightweight. One well-versed in Native American jewelry might notice that the traditional Navajo stamp style seen in Marc’s jewelry is liken to a fellow Native American artist’s work: Emerson Bill.
