6.25" Wayne Muskett Navajo sterling spiny oyster, turquoise, lapis cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics. Solid sterling silver, very well made. No damage or significant wear. WAYNE MUSKETT was born in Gallup, NM, a Navajo Reservation border town of trading posts and tourists--a mosaic of different peoples and cultures. Wayne‘s jewelry echoes his colorful hometown. He creates inlay bracelets set with the bright stones of earth: green malachite, blood-red coral, deep blue lapis and the dusty blue of denim lapis, and, of course, high grade turquoise. Wayne doesn‘t restrict his work to only sterling silver. He also creates stunning gold jewelry with the same expert eye to color. "I really enjoy working with gold. There‘s a different vibrancy in the colors." Wayne comes from a family of craftsmen. His father creates more traditional pieces, while his brother also makes inlay jewelry. His father‘s influence is apparent in Wayne‘s pendants--bear pendants, their rounded backs like the sacred es honoring the most powerful and wise creature. Wayne sometimes inlays these pendants on both sides, a pleasant surprise to the unsuspecting. Wayne‘s pieces promise to continue delivering unexpected delight to those who appreciate quality craftsmanship.

Bruce Morgan Bruce Morgan (b. 1957) is an award-winning Navajo silversmith renowned for his innovative use of both silver and gold in his jewelry, particularly his signature gold overlay. Born in Rehoboth, New Mexico, and raised in Brimhall, Bruce crafted his first piece of jewelry while in high school. Following the tragic death of his aunt, a jeweler, his grandmother passed down her tools to him, encouraging him to pursue the craft. After graduating in 1976, Bruce moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and began making jewelry for others in 1978. However, the early days were challenging, leading him to take a job as a miner in a uranium mine while training to become an electrician. After a year, he was laid off and continued his education in commercial electrical work, aiming to become an electrical engineer. Realizing the physical demands of the trade were not for him, Bruce returned to jewelry making, where he sought to distinguish himself in the field. Initially focused on traditional jewelry styles featuring conchas and turquoise, he became one of the first artists to utilize the two-tone method of combining silver and gold in 1983. Notably, in 1982, he created a silver cane for the Prime Minister of Egypt. By 1983, he incorporated “traditional and simple stampwork into his pieces, solidifying his signature gold overlay style. While he admires traditional jewelry, Bruce has committed to producing gold overlay pieces, as they are quicker to make and provide unique options for everyday wear or special occasions. His rings, often chosen as wedding bands, exemplify this versatility. With exceptionally clean lines and his renowned gold overlay, Bruces work has garnered international attention, earning features in "Arizona Highways" and "Southwest Art" magazines. He continues to create beautiful jewelry to this day.

Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) Santo Domingo silver turquoise nugget cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics. Solid sterling silver, unusual early work by Vidal Aragon that demonstrates the diversity of his skill as a silversmith. Circa mid 20th century. 6 1/8" inside including the 1 1/8" gap 5" from terminal to terminal without the gap. From Santo Domingo Pueblo, Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) translated pueblo life into intricate storyteller jewelry. He became internationally renown for his inventive silver and gold overlay designs. His representations of the elements of nature, animals and pueblo life are symbolic of the Indian way. One symbol refers to “everlasting happiness. Other common motifs are animals and the tracks they make and the blessing and nourishment of corn. An expert craftsman, Aragon drew each story strip with his saw blade and soldered it to a textured oxidized underlayer to illuminate the images. He often incorporated a trademark gold disk to represent the sun or moon. Vidal Aragon learned the overlay technique in the 1930s when he was a student at the Santa Fe Indian School. Before inventing the storyteller jewelry, he experimented with tufa casting and other metalworking techniques. He briefly lived in Scottsdale where he honed his skills as a shop smith. He has fond memories of the time he spent learning ballet as a young man in Phoenix. By the early 1940s, Vidal was already being recognized alongside such prominent smiths as Ambrose Roanhorse and Tom Burnsides for his innovative yet classical designs. Aragon found his true calling though when he began to translate his rich sense of the pueblo way of life into wearable stories, often full of his unique humor.

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn‘t an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I‘ve seen thousands of pieces xrf‘d to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women‘s wrist.

Art Deco Sterling Danecraft floral bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics. No issues. In the early 1900s, as Italy was continuing to become the world leader in
fashion, the Primavera family worked as jewelry artisans in the beautiful area
of Pescara, Italy. In 1918, the family founded Primavera Designs and by 1921 it
had become the largest jewelry company in the Abruzzo region. It was there that the family became well known throughout the region for their
ability to design and make jewelry for royalty and wealthy families. Often one
of the Primavera jewelry artisans would go directly into the home of a patron to
design and reproduce a cherished object of art into jewelry. This continued in Italy until 1934, when Mr. Victor Primavera, Sr. immigrated to
the United States and incorporated his company in Rhode Island; the jewelry
capital of the United States. Primavera Designs now had a United States
division, known as Danecraft, with a small factory and Mr. Victor Primavera, Sr.
heading up the design and model making teams. His forte in designing product was always timeliness. He often said that it was
easy to design a piece to be shown in a museum, but it took research and talent
to design product that would be worn by a woman with fashion sense. Although the candlelight has been replaced by fluorescent light and some of the painstaking handwork has been supplemented by modern machinery, the rich and
beautiful handcrafted look of distinction continues.

Since 1934, Danecraft has been privately owned and operated by the Primavera
family.

6 5/8" Kirk Smith Navajo sterling and turquoise cuff bracelet

    1 en stock

6 5/8" Kirk Smith Navajo sterling and turquoise cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics, appears unworn. Native American jewelry artisan Kirk Smith, or Kiyaa Alani Shush Dine (his Dine tribe name, meaning “towering house bear people clan), created a long-lasting legacy in a tragically short life. His work is highly regarded for its quality craftsmanship and his use of stones of only the highest quality and richest coloring. Kirks pieces, primarily his concho belts for which he was best known, have long been coveted and collectible, with their value only increasing as a result of his unexpected, early death. His story is an interesting one. HIS LIFE: Kirk Smith first began working with silver at around age 7 in his grandfathers hidden workshop, that according to Smiths interview with Perry Null Trading, “you would not see it unless you knew it was there. His grandfather also made jewelry and Kirk used to aid him by first learning to run the bellow to heat the charcoal that would allow his grandfather to work with the silver at high temperatures, and then eventually began to work with beads and bracelets and necklaces himself. He later used these primitive skills to craft jewelry for his uncle, who would exchange clothes and shoes for his pieces. In 1972, Kirk struck out on his own, primarily working in silver cast work, until the price of silver went up in 1974 and he went to work doing different things like working in the mine or a refinery in Galveston. He returned to jewelry making in the early 1980s when his mother got sick and he desired to be nearer to her. Thats when his craft took a turn. HIS MENTORS: Of course, his grandfather was his earliest influence, and perhaps the most profound on Kirk as a person, but when it comes to his craftsmanship, the game-changer for him was his brother-in-law. Kirks sister was married to an artisan named Harry Morgan, a well-known name in the world of Native American jewelry. Harry was known for his intricate stamp work and the way he would style his silver to give it an antique look, believing that overly polished silver hid the detailing and the beauty of a piece. It was Harry who really taught Kirk about design and style in terms of his craft. HIS CRAFT: Kirk is probably best known for his concho belts, like the one we found in Audreys closet, that we thought was too beautiful not to share with yall after being tucked away for too long. He was known for his unrelenting insistence on working his silver by hand, resulting in beautiful pieces of heavy silver and high-grade stones. In addition to concho belts, Kirk crafted gorgeous statement cuff bracelets with turquoise and red coral and some of the most striking blue lapis youve ever seen, as well as some rings, pendants, earrings, and even a few squash blossoms. As we mentioned, his work is highly collectible, not only because of its stunning beauty, but because sadly, there wont be any more made; Kirk was tragically killed in 2012. HIS DEATH: On September 17, 2012, Kirk was in an altercation in a parking lot with a young man whose truck had struck Kirks vehicle as the man was attempting to back into a parking spot. When the driver, who was intoxicated, tried to flee the scene, Kirk jumped onto the hood of the mans truck. When he was eventually unable to maintain his grip, Kirk was flung from the moving vehicle and suffered injuries which resulted in his death in an Albuquerque hospital a little while later. The driver did succeed in fleeing the scene, but eventually collided with another truck and a barrier on Interstate 25 and was apprehended after a violent struggle with police; he was found to have had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16, twice the legal limit. Incredibly, the driver, who was 16 at the time, was only sentenced to 90 days in a treatment center and two years probation. As you might imagine, Kirks surviving family does not feel that justice was done in the wake of his death, but they are carrying on his legacy in a positive way despite the circumstances. Tom Dewitt (American, 1947-2021) Anglo Santa Fe artist Tom Dewitt is known for creating “old style silver pieces. He is inspired by silverwork from the 1880s-1940s. Toms work regularly is mistaken for being much older than it is. Tom has been creating retro-style jewelry for over four decades and sells his work in galleries around the country. Tom was born in Michigan and raised in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Venice High in 1965. He began his silver- smith career directly after school while also working as a lighting technician for major venues in L.A. during the wave of the 1960‘s psychedelic rock & roll concerts. He eventually landed a job with Fox Studios working as an electrician for long-running TV series‘ such as M.A.S.H., Dragnet, The Love Boat, and others. He also worked on some big films; The Doors, Lonesome Dove, Natural Born Killers, The Missing, and others. He made frequent trips to Santa Fe starting when he was 21 to buy and sell jewelry, trade and pick up tools. He made New Mexico his home in the 1970s settling in Pojoaque as a silversmith also returning to L.A. for work in the movie and TV business. He was one of the original "Anglo Silversmiths" in New Mexico and a trader. He called his jewelry "old pawn while you wait" because it looked like the old Native American jewelry found in pawn shops. He had a special relationship with the Zuni Pueblo and revered the culture and artistic styles of the Native American silversmiths and artisans. He sold to major galleries in Santa Fe and had a line with Ralph Lauren in the early 2000s. He was extremely talented and people from all over the world collected his work. Tom was a silversmith for 52 years making over 20,000 pieces of southwestern and cowboy style jewelry and art. Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics.
