Navajo trader Dean Kirk opened his trading post at Manuelito, New Mexico (between Gallup and the Arizona border) around January 1941. The silver work made in Deans shop was typically Navajo tourist type designs and hallmarked UITA22 (under the auspices of the United Indian Traders Association) until about 1951. The UITA‘s stated goals were: 1) to promote improved business practices among Indian traders, arts and crafts dealers, Indians, and all related agencies; 2) to promote, encourage, and protect the manufacture and sale of genuine Indian handmade arts and crafts; and 3) to promote the general welfare of those engaged in the business of Indian trading, as well as the welfare of the Navajo Indians and all other Indians of North America.

Morgan, Harry Biography Harry Morgan is known for his classic revival style jewelry with its smooth, soft, antique finishes and classic design. He is a fifth-generation silversmith. Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Harry Morgan began casting jewelry at age seven. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style. The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM. He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him. Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004. Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. Harry Morgan won awards at every major Indian art show, and had an exhibit of his creations at the Heard Museum in 2007, a year before he passed way.

He then moved to "The Pink Adobe", in 1953. It was Alberto Contreras‘s first building location at 45 W. Council and Ash Alley, Tucson Az.

Collected about 25 or so years ago and never worn. Manuel Hoyungowa. c:(1953-2011). He began his career in jewelry in 1970 and presented his work at the Inter Tribal Ceremonial in Gallup, NM. He learned the technique of silver overlay from his grandfather, Preston Monongye and also studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe, NM. He was not only a talented jeweler, but also a Hopi Prophet, religious leader and author. He wrote "Cry of the Earth Statement" a Hopi prophecy message, which he delivered to the United Nations General Assembly and Re-submitted 11/23/93.

No identifying marks, the turquoise is most likely #8 or a rare Kingman. I believe this bracelet to be c1940‘s-50‘s. I also believe a "jeweler" got ahold of it and machine polished it, therefore it does not exhibit the wear that it should exhibit. Still if you look closely at the bezels, etc you can tell. The quality of stones, workmanship, etc. It‘s been about 70 years since somebody would make a masterpiece like this and not bother to sign it.

Collected about 45 or so years ago worn little if any. Virgil Thomas (1948-1986) Virgil Thomas became an active silversmith in 1972 and continued until his early death in 1986. His specialty was the traditional Hopi silver overlay technique promoted by the Hopi Arts & Crafts Co-op Guild which was formed in 1947, after World War II, when returning Hopi servicemen were trained at a silversmithing school founded under the G.I. bill. The late Paul Saufkie, Sr. was the technical instructor and the late Fred Kabotie, noted Hopi artist and designer, taught design. Although many techniques of silver work were used, the overlay style gradually emerged as the dominate style. This simple, unique, elegant jewelry is now considered essentially the Hopi style of jewelry. The Guild‘s purpose is to produce, purchase, promote, and sell handcrafts and jewelry. The Hopi Arts and Crafts Co-op Guild has its own building on Second Mesa, Arizona, next to the Hopi Cultural Center & Museum. Any craftsman, potter, basket maker, weaver or silversmith can have his or her work displayed and sold there. Half the building is devoted to work benches and supplies for the silversmiths. With only a 14-year career, Virgil Thomas could not have been overly productive so his jewelry is probably relatively rare. He was Corn Clan from the Third Msa village Oraibi. His hallmark signature is a V for Virgil and T for Thomas with the V placed over the T. He was included in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture 2002 exhibit "Jewel of the Southwest" and he is represented in that museum‘s collection.

At the time of listing I have two of these rare bangles, listing separately. They vary in cat placement and level of oxidation of the background. This one has an older mark. anderas -consignment James Avery was a World War II veteran and the founder of the James Avery Artisan Jewelry company: Early life Born in Chicago in 1921, Avery was a decorated pilot who flew 44 missions over Germany. After the war, he studied industrial design at the University of Illinois and taught at the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado. Jewelry making Avery began making jewelry in his free time around 1951. He was inspired to create art that he found meaningful, and hoped others would find it meaningful too. Starting the business In 1954, Avery began selling jewelry from a wooden box at summer camps in Kerrville, Texas, where he moved with his wife. He printed his first catalog in 1957 and opened his first store and manufacturing facility in Kerrville in 1967. Designs Avery‘s designs were inspired by his faith, and often included faith-based images like crosses, chalices, doves, and fish. He also designed a pin for the Apollo XII astronauts, and was commissioned by NASA twice more.

Selling the exact piece shown in great condition with no damage or significant wear. anderas -consignment James Avery was a World War II veteran and the founder of the James Avery Artisan Jewelry company: Early life Born in Chicago in 1921, Avery was a decorated pilot who flew 44 missions over Germany. After the war, he studied industrial design at the University of Illinois and taught at the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado. Jewelry making Avery began making jewelry in his free time around 1951. He was inspired to create art that he found meaningful, and hoped others would find it meaningful too. Starting the business In 1954, Avery began selling jewelry from a wooden box at summer camps in Kerrville, Texas, where he moved with his wife. He printed his first catalog in 1957 and opened his first store and manufacturing facility in Kerrville in 1967. Designs Avery‘s designs were inspired by his faith, and often included faith-based images like crosses, chalices, doves, and fish. He also designed a pin for the Apollo XII astronauts, and was commissioned by NASA twice more.

A lifetime spent studying and working in the Northwest Coast Native style is reflected in the diverse body of Greg Horners work. With work ranging from intricately engraved silver bracelets, cast glass sculpture to monumental totem carvings, Greg continues to expand his artistic voice. A life-long Alaskan, Greg was introduced to carving at Alaska Indian Arts in 1974. Apprenticed to some of the finest Native and non-native artists in Alaska, he developed a foundation to further explore this art form in wood, metal and print media. “This work evolves out of my own personal experiences and interpretation of traditional Native art forms and imagery. I strive toward originality and the level of craftsmanship that is the legacy of the Northwest Coast Native art. Greg pursued a formal art education in Seattle, graduating from Cornish Institute of Art in 1987. Not an Alaskan Native, Greg was given a Tlingit name, “Skin Dei, at a Potlach memorial in honor of his mentor, Tlingit elder George Lewis. Greg works year-round in Haines on private commissions and work for private galleries throughout Southeast Alaska. Teamed with his wife Leigh, they work together out of their home and studio located in the historic Fort Seward.
