Large Dan Simplicio Zuni turquoise/sterling silver squash blossom necklace. Solid sterling silver tested and guaranteed with weight and measurements in the pictures. No issues, circa 1940‘s to mid 20th century. No detectable markings other than CG Wallace code on back of Naja, 26" long. Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) is best known for innovative turquoise and coral settings as well as his impeccable silver work. Dan worked at C.G. Wallace’s trading post and ultimately Wallace became one of the biggest Simplicio collectors. He used branch coral it its natural form, which was unheard of during this time period. He innovated the natural coral and turquoise style of jewelry while simultaneously excelling with his silver work. He was also a master of inlay, which he did only in his formative years of which we have few examples of today. Simplicio worked with silver in a very interesting way, a way that his son credits to his time overseas in WWII. He was influenced by the French, German and Italian use of leaf patterns. It is this leaf work that sets Simplicio’s pieces apart from traditional Zuni work.

Horace Iule, Zuni Pueblo Jeweler Horace Iule learned silversmithing from his father and eventually became an expert of the casting method. He was one of the first from Zuni Pueblo to create the Knifewing God in silver. Horace began working as a silversmith in the 1930s after returning from school in Phoenix where he had studied blacksmithing. Horace Iule (1901-1978), pronounced Ai-ú-le was a third-generation silversmith. His grandfather, a man known as Sneezing Man, was identified by John Adair in his book The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths as one of the first silversmiths at Zuni Pueblo. Horace Iule also taught jewelry making at Zuni Day School, teaching and influencing a whole generation of Zuni smiths. Horace taught his son Wilbur Iule who carries on the tradition.

c1950 Lambert Homer Sr. Zuni Blue Gem Turquoise flush inlay sterling silver screw back earrings. Circa second quarter of the 20th century to mid 20th century, large and unique with high grade turquoise. Unmarked, attributed. Homer, Lambert Sr. Biography (1917-1972)Widely recognized as a fine lapidarist, Lambert Homer collaborated with other artists who worked with trader C. G. Wallace. He is perhaps best known for pieces featuring intricate mosaic inlay on spiny oyster shell that closely resemble shell inlay work found at prehistoric Southwestern sites. After removing the spines from these distinctively coral-colored shells, Homer inlaid them with white shell, turquoise and jet, creating vibrant geometric patterns. Some of his most spectacular pieces are belts with conchas of inlaid spiny oyster shell. Homer also made inlaid Knife Wings and Rainbow Gods, and he is credited with the first use of the Gan dancer as a jewelry design motif. Zuni artists with whom Lambert Homer collaborated include Dan Simplicio, Leo Poblano, Ida Poblano, and his son Lambert Homer, Jr. He also worked with Navajo silver-workers Roger Skeet and Charlie Bitsui. Lambert, who was married to Juanita Homer, and his brother Bernard, who was married to Alice Homer, worked closely with their wives, both of whom were daughters of Leekya.
