Ron Henry grew up in Coyote Canyon, New Mexico on the Navajo Reservation. He attended school through the 8th grade at Tohatchi School. His mother, Louise, was a talented Navajo weaver and silversmith. His older brother, Ernie, taught Ron to design and make traditional style jewelry. In 1975, the Henry family moved to Rochester, Minnesota to both make and market their jewelry. They opened a store, Chi-Nah-Bah, where Ron developed his skill as a silversmith.
Ron's style is contemporary and unique. Each piece is completely handmade. He uses sterling silver and 14k. The natural stones his uses are not fabricated. Ron pays great attention to detail. His work is impeccable.
Ron creates each piece by hand. He does no casting. The piece will take between two to three weeks to be completed. There are times the piece will be completed before that timeframe. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.
