His\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;career began as a foreman for glass factory Hoare and Daily in Brooklyn, New\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;York moving with the company to Corning, New York in 1868.\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;Once in Corning, he soon opened his own cutting shop which was incorporated as\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;T.G. Hawkes \u0026amp; Company in 1890. This on the heels of success the year before when\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;Hawkes famously won acclaim and Grand Prize at the Universal Exposition in\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;Paris.\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;Thomas Gibbons Hawkes\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;European taste for sparkling cut glass at this time was emulated in the United\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;States in what was called the Brilliant Cut Glass Period. Over 1,000 cutting\u0026lt;br\u0026gt;shops were founded to meet the demand and T.G. Hawkes \u0026amp; Company flourished.
