He comes from a long line of silversmiths including mother Ella Long, his grandparents, Helen and Jim Long, and his Uncle Phillip Long, and Tommy Long are all silversmiths. He learned from his grandparents with whom he spent summers when he was 7 and 8 years old. They were very patient, inspiring and so happy that he was carrying on the tradition of their art. He started with a bola tie, rings, and then he explored his own style doing silver mudheads, sun, and yei be chai kachinas.His first pieces were bola ties with dimensional silversmith work. He was the first in his family to do freestanding kachinas. The family tradition now continues with his three daughters, ages 13, 15 and 16, and his 23 year old son Wayne. His oldest daughter helps with his designs and all the girls help with cleaning, washing, and buffing. They work as a team.Sadly, we lost a very special friend and silversmith when Toby passed away in October 2019. His unique talent and creativity lives on in his beautiful jewelry. Geraldine Yazzie Navajo Silver and turquoise cluster concho belt. 59" total length with no holes in 1" leather belt. New old stock condition, never worn, purchased for 6500k about 20 years ago. High grade turquoise, very high quality workmanship. 3" x 2.5" buckle, (10) 2.5" x 2" conchos. 670 grams. Geraldine Yazzie started creating beautiful silver jewelry in the late 80‘s. Learning from her mother, she supports her own family with her well-crafted belts and other forms. She resides on the Navajo reservation in the area of Smith Lake, New Mexico near Crownpoint, New Mexico. Geraldine is a Navajo silversmith in her early 50‘s who has been smithing silver for over thirty years. She is known for her Traditional Revival style jewelry. Geraldine‘s work is sometimes misrepresented as vintage, old pawn because her detailing is so like the work common to the middle of the twentieth century. She is also particularly adept in her manner of oxidizing her silver so that the patina seems to be due simply to age of the piece. In addition, she pays particular attention to using stamps of a bygone era and sometimes adds small nicks to her pieces to make them look as though they‘ve been worn for decades. Discovered in 1907, the mine was last actively worked in the 1930s. The stones have a distinct blue green color with yellow limonite matrix. The Cadman brothers and the Reeves brothers, therefore, share a common element of apprenticeship and exhibit certain similarities in their work. UITA’s distinctive hallmark of its initials UITA with an arrowhead in the middle followed by the numeric designation of the particular trading company it was made at or for was a guarantee of the highest quality Native jewelry; completely handmade using solely traditional methods of craftsmanship and use of only the finest, traditional materials. Since the UITA traders were the most important “Who’s-who” of their day they were well-equipped to set and enforce such high standards and as a result, the finest jewelry pieces made under UITA’s auspices are some of the very finest Navajo and Pueblo pieces of the 20th Century."The United Indian Traders Association (UITA) was established on September 13, 1931 for the expressed purpose of authentication of Indian crafts. At the time, the UITA was an important player both in Indian cultural life and in advocating for the sale of authentic Indian arts and crafts."Not only is this bracelet a classic, but the trading post it was made for and sold at is a classic too: “UITA 6” was the numeric designation assigned to the historic and extremely remote Borrego Pass Trading Post, set in the high pinon-juniper studded hills about 50 miles south of Chaco Canyon in Northwestern New Mexico. The post first opened in 1927 and was named after the nearby Borrego Pass, an ancient water gap across the Continental Divide where Navajos used to drive their sheep. Borrego Pass Trading Post was operated by several highly influential prominent Indian traders over the next fifty-plus years, including Ben and Anna Harvey, Bill and Jean Cousins and Don and Fern Smouse. The Navajo know Borrego Pass in the Navajo language as “Tiish Bito” (Snake Spring) or “Dibe Yazhi Habitiin” meaning "Upward Path of the Lamb."It’s hard to believe that such an elegant, refined and sophisticated looking piece was made essentially in the middle of nowhere in such an isolated and desolate region. Mark Chee (1914-1981) Navajo Silver bolo tie with turquoise. Weight in measurements in pics, some bends to original tips to give them character, no other issues.Mark Chee (1914-1981) BiographyNavajo artist, Mark Chee is among the earliest southwest silversmiths. Mark Chee is known for traditional stamp work and high quality stone settings in unusually heavy silver. He was born in Lukachukai, Arizona around 1900 and was sent to government school at Fort Defiance (a United States government practice during that time) from the age of 10 to the 11thgrade. He is the elder brother of Joe Chee. He was active during the 1930s through ‘60s. He specialized in heavy silver in old style designs. He began polishing silver in Julius Gans’ Southwest Art and Crafts shop in Santa Fe for $5.00 a week. He then bought a few tools and used them all his life. He quickly became an accomplished silversmith and was hired as a bench smith at Frank Patania’s Thunderbird Shop and later at Al Packard’s shop on the Santa Fe Plaza. He was also a bench-smith for the Wooden Indian at Embudo, New Mexico. His hallmark is a stamp of a bird with his last name in the body in Gothic print. His chei was Naakaii Dine'é (Mexican People Clan) and his nálí was Tódích'íi'nii (Bitter Water Clan).He grew up in Shiprock, where he graduated from Shiprock Agricultural High School in 1941. A year later, at age 19, he enlisted in the Marines and became one of the first of the elite group later named the Navajo Code Talkers.He didn't set out to be a hero, said Oliver's nephew Lawrence Oliver, whose father Willard also was a code talker."I was sitting with my dad once and asked him if he knew why Uncle Lloyd enlisted," Lawrence said.
