Large Naveek Navajo/greek 14k, Opal, turquoise, and black Jade penant. No issues, measurement and weight in pics.

NAVEEK…named Artist of the Year 1993, by the Indian Arts and Crafts Association, is an extraordinary master jeweler by any standard. He uses his professional name Naveek to honor his Navajo and Greek heritage.

Naveek was born at Fort Defiance, Arizona, and raised in the area west of Standing Rock on the Navajo Reservation and in the community of Gallup, New Mexico. His grandfather, Tom A. Lewis, a Navajo medicine man and traditional silversmith, greatly influenced Naveek’s interest in art and taught Naveek his essential skills. While this exposure to his Navajo culture has certainly been a major influence, Naveek also credits his Greek ancestry for much of his creativity.

In Naveek’s superb jewelry there is a strong sense of harmony and balance between traditional and contemporary concepts. He constantly searches for new approaches and unique styles, while at the same time giving strict attention to minute details and the flawless finish of each piece.

An example is the way his bracelets conform to the wrist. He describes the shape as a “comfort curve,” and points out that they are designed to fit in such a way that there is no restriction of the movements of the hand or wrist.

His complex channel inlay style has evolved over twenty-five years into award-winning designs sought by collectors worldwide and featured in galleries throughout the country. And his respect for the culture of the Old Ways and his intrinsic love of nature are translated into subtle yet striking elegance by the use of silver or gold, precious and semi-precious gemstones, and his notable intricate star-burst design.

One of the singular features of a Naveek bracelet is the stampwork on the inside, which may be either traditional in design or representative of the mountain wild flowers. Often asked about the significance, the answer can be found in Navajo belief. “An individual’s outer beauty is immediately apparent and easily taken for granted. Only if you take the time to learn about the person can you discover and appreciate the internal beauty that lies within, that sets each person apart and makes each of us special.” So it is with each piece, the internal design adds to the uniqueness and beauty of the art.

  • Large Old African Bete Mask

    Large Old African Bete Mask

    1 in stock

Large Old African Mask. I think it's really old, 19th to early 20th century.
Nice estate fresh ceremonial mask covered in hide with some wear as shown.
15"high, 10"wide, 12.5"deep, crack in forehead, a few of the horns are a little
loose.

The Bete and Gere people reside in Ivore' Coast, just south of the Guro. ,
omnipresent in Bete life, aims to maintain a harmonious relationship between
nature and the ancestors, who are responsible for the welfare of the tribe.
Elaborate masquerades and ceremonies are performed by the men of the tribe who
belong to dance societies.According to the book, THE TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA
byBacquart: "Bete carvers are renowned for one particular type of face mask
which has exaggerated features- a large protruding mouth,an elongated nose, with
nostrils sometimes extending to each side of the face, and globular eyes set
beneath a high domed forehead carved with a medium ridge. Historically, this
type of mask was worn to prepare men for war; nowadays,it is worn for a variety
of ceremonies, including entertainment dances." These masks were influenced by
the tradition of their western neighbors, the "We". The Bete grew only what was
needed for a subsistence economy and placed more importance on the hunt. To
render the hostile forces of the forest material, they sculpted a type of mask
that would provoke terror: the "gre", with its grimacing face, distorted
features facial protuberances, bulging forehead. The Bete live in the
southwestern part of the country, between the Akan ethnic groups to the east and
the Guro tribe to the north. They number about 600,000 and are an agricultural
group. Patrilinear, the Bete live – under the ancestors’ authority – in small
“headless” villages. Historically they were hunters, but nowadays they also
farm. They grow what is needed for a subsistence economy. They also have linked
to the market economy and much of their effort is devoted to the cultivation of
cacao and coffee. , omnipresent in Bete life, aims to maintain a harmonious
relationship between nature and the ancestors who are responsible for the
welfare of the tribe. Today the vast majority still follow their traditional
African , believing in a creator God Lago, but do not pray to or worship him.
Instead they seek help from many lesser spirits supposed to have supernatural
power to help them, or give protection--spirits of their ancestors, spirits that
inhabit trees, rivers, rocks, etc. They observe many customs and taboos and make
sacrifices of eggs, chickens, cows, etc. Each ritual focuses on the maintenance
and care of good relations with the world of ancestors, so as to assure the
protection of the lineages. The cults give rise to numerous mask performances,
during the course of which the music assumes fundamental importance. The
apprenticeship of male youngsters particularly concentrates on the mastery of
these arts. In fact, within a village context the men form into veritable dance
societies, membership in which is indispensable. Bete carvers are renowned for
one particular type of face mask, the gre or nyabwa , which has exaggerated,
grimacing distorted features – a large protruding mouth, facial protuberances,
bulging forehead, elongated nose, with nostrils sometimes extending to each side
of the face, and globular or bulging slit eyes set beneath a high-domed forehead
carved with a medium ridge. In earlier days, this mask presided over the
ceremony held when peace was restored after armed conflicts and it participated
in sessions of customary justice. This type of mask was also worn to prepare men
for war; the masks offered magical protection by instilling fear and terror in
potential enemies. Nowadays, it is worn for a variety of ceremonies, including
entertainment dances.

Wanting to give a gift to Nixon, then-U.S. Sen. John Tower of Texas commissioned Austin artist Brenda Polsky Morgan Childs to paint a scene from the game, which he then sent to Nixon. The painting was flown to Washington first class, but she flew coach, Childs' friends recall. It was a perfect example of how Childs' talent at painting — which brought her famous clients like John Wayne, Bob Hope and Barbara Jordan — never overshadowed her humility.

  • Large Paul Livingston Navajo sterling pendant with turquoise

Large Paul Livingston Navajo sterling pendant with turquoise

    1 in stock

Large Paul Livingston Navajo sterling pendant with turquoise.Paul Livingston was born in 1954 and has spent his entire life on the Navajo Church Rock Reservation, where he grew up watching with fascination as his silversmith Uncle crafted raw metal and stone into beautiful jewelry. Through trial and error and a great deal of help from his Uncle, Paul became an accomplished young jewelry maker.By the time he was twenty-two he was ready to launch himself full time into silversmithing. Paul Livingstonis an acclaimed Navajo silversmith who favors substance in his metal work and high-quality, natural stones in all his settings. Today, nearly forty years later, Paul is a nationally known and collected jewelry artist. He is particularly known for a style of jewelry most silversmiths shy away from a technique known as ‘cluster and row work’ where multiple tiny stones are used together to form a delicate, colorful designs in jewelry. Paul is happy to work with the little stones, even the tiny round “snake eye” ones and is renowned for how exquisitely aligned the stone clusters and rows of stones are on his pieces.Even at his age Paul continues to experiment with new jewelry techniques and design styles. He especially enjoys working unusual textures created on metals and will often incorporate a new surface finish or other design application to see if these changes might enhance the jewelry’s appearance and appeal. Though his forte has always been more traditional even vintage looking Navajo style jewelry, his contemporary designs are also in high demand. Paul Livingston creates beautiful jewelry using stones that aren’t often found in Native American jewelry. The intricate ‘saw work designs’ of his pieces are especially difficult to achieve but so very visually appealing in Paul’s finished work. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.

Large Pre-Mayan Olmec Articulating Arms Pre-Columbian figure

    1 in stock

Large Pre-Mayan Olmec Articulating Arms Pre-Columbian figure. 10" tall x 7" wide, very old restoration on one shoulder and to neck I believe, very old stable fissures at hips. Rare, museum quality with unusual complex articulating arms likely intended to hold various size offerings. The arms move smoothly and fluidly with no evidence of a string as seen with simpler versions of these. This was made by a master potter approx 2500 years ago. Authenticity guaranteed. This is part of a large collection of artifacts I'm helping liquidate, all purchased from reputable sources over the last quarter of the 20th century, money was no object. I'm pricing everything at a small fraction of what it cost from the galleries/auctions. Olmec, the first elaborate pre-Columbian civilization of Mesoamerica (c. 1200–400 BCE) and one that is thought to have set many of the fundamental patterns evinced by later American Indian cultures of Mexico and Central America, notably the Maya and the Aztec. The Nahuatl (Aztec) name for these people, Olmecatl, or Olmec in the modern corruption, means “rubber people” or “people of the rubber country.” That term was chosen because the Olmecs extracted latex from Panama rubber trees (Castilla elastica) growing in the region and mixed it with the juice of a local vine (Ipomoea alba, moonflower) to create rubber. The chief Olmec sites are San Lorenzo, La Venta, Laa de los Cerros, and Tres Zapotes in what is now southern Mexico. Much of what is known about the Olmecs was inferred from archaeological excavations at those sites, which have uncovered large earthen pyramids and platforms and monumental stone carvings. The Olmecs are especially identified with 17 huge stone heads—ranging in height from 1.47 to 3.4 metres (4.82 to 11.15 feet)—with flat faces and full lips, wearing helmetlike headgear. It is generally thought that these are portraits of Olmec rulers. Other Olmec artifacts include so-called baby-faced figures and figurines. These display a rounded facial form, thick features, heavy-lidded eyes, and down-turned mouths, and they are sometimes referred to as were-jaguars. The Olmecs lived in hot, humid lowlands along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in what is now southern Veracruz and Tabasco states in southern Mexico. The first evidence of their remarkable art style appears about 1200 BCE in San Lorenzo, their oldest known building site. This site is remarkable for its many stone monuments, including some of the colossal carved heads mentioned above. In the late 20th century a stone slab engraved with symbols that appear to have been the Olmec writing system (sometimes called epi-Olmec, or Isthmian) was discovered in the village of Cascajal, near San Lorenzo. The Cascajal stone dates to approximately 900 BCE and may be the oldest example of writing from the Americas. Other objects containing glyphs include the Tuxtla Statuette, the Chiapa de Corzo shard, the O’Boyle mask, and the La Mojarra stela (discovered 1986). The last object, which displays 465 glyphs, greatly facilitated the interpretation of the epi-Olmec language, though many questions remain. The Olmecs developed a wide trading network, and between 1100 and 800 BCE their cultural influence spread northwestward to the Valley of Mexico and southeastward to parts of Central America. The constructions and monuments of the Olmecs, as well as the sophistication and power of their art, make it clear that their society was complex and nonegalitarian.
