He is best known and loved for his painstakingly beautiful handcrafted precision stamp work in heavy-gauge silver creating sophistically stimulating jewelry. Born in 1942 into a family of skilled silversmiths, Thomas Curtis observed the secrets of his familys finely crafted silver work and began creating traditional Navajo jewelry by the age of 12. Before committing himself completely to the art of metalsmithing, Curtis was a champion horseback rider and won many awards as a member of the All-Indian Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association performing bareback, bull riding and saddle bronc. The rodeo is where he was given his acclaimed surname, ‘Curtis. Born as Thomas Redhorse, his family name was the source of many jokes while working in the rodeo and was given the name ‘Curtis by a stock contractor who wished him to be recognized for his riding talent and not overshadowed by a name. After somersaulting backwards off of a horse and injuring himself in 1969, Thomas left the rodeo to pursue his craft as a silversmith full time. Thomas Curtis grew up observing his uncle who was a blacksmith and had a business repairing wagons. “It was like todays car garage, he had wagons lined up. I would help him, I was fascinated by all of the tools and I had an interest in working with metal. Curtis elaborated on his fascinations with blacksmithing while working in the rodeo, and continued them into his jewelry making career by hand making the hardened steel die stamps that identified him as one of the premier Navajo silversmiths of his time. Thomas Curtis believed an artist should be a part of every process in the creation of their work, and he took monumental pride in the art of making his own die stamps for his harmonious arrangements. He also turned to sacred traditions, sourcing his patterns and descriptive style from traditional weavings, historic and contemporary construction from the 1890s-1940s, and adapted classic ketoh designs for the lids of the elaborate silver boxes he is known for. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said.The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Mary unfortunately passed away in 1993. They both made jewelry since the 1940’s and Lee has said that they sold to wonderful traders like C.G. Wallace, R. L. Wallace, Joe Tanner and Dude Kirk. They also sold beautiful jewelry to Don and Nita Hoel over the years.Lee was born in 1929 and Mary in 1933. Lee and Mary married in 1949 and started making jewelry together shortly after. Greg Schaaf stated in his book “American indian Jewelry: 1200 Artist Biographies” that “they were one of the best husband-wife teams in the history of Zuni jewelry”. Lee did most of the silver work while Mary was the stone cutter, which she learned to do from Lee’s mother, Lula. Begay Sr. was born and raised in Kayenta - Chilchinbeto,<br>AZ. In 1975-76, Ernest took a silversmithing class at Monument Valley High<br>School. “We used copper in the class, but that’s where I got my start. I took<br>the class because it looked like something fun and easy to do. I used to watch<br>my brother-in-law, and his father make jewelry, they used to give me scrap<br>silver to work with,” recalls Ernest.<br><br>Ernest’s career in jewelry making didn’t really take off until he entered some<br>rather distinguished pieces into the Navajo Nation Fair and the Gallup<br>Intertribal Indian Ceremonial. Here, he received many awards and ribbons, which<br>helped him begin his career as jewelry artist.<br><br>Over the years, Ernest has slowly built a reputation for coral and turquoise<br>cluster work on heavy gauge silver with deep custom-designed stamp work. Ernest<br>gets much inspiration from traditional and old jewelry styles. “Concho belts,<br>squash blossoms, bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, and belt buckles, I do<br>them all in my own signature old style series. This old style jewelry always<br>caught my eye. I used to go to the Trading Posts just to look at some of the old<br>pawn on display. The ones that caught my attention were always the pieces that<br>used the thick silver, and the stamp work on them,” says Ernest.
