THE JUDD COMPANY WALLINGFORD, CN 1830 - 1954 The Judd ancestry can be traced back to Deacon Thomas Judd who came from England and settled in Cambridge, MA in 1633/4. Deacon Morton Judd, born in 1808, learned his trade in a brass foundry and then, established his own business in 1830. In 1833, Morton's brother, Oliver S., joined the company as partner and the name was changed to M & O.S. Judd. In 1853, Morton's eldest son, Albert, replaced Oliver S. as the business partner. And, the company's name was changed to M. Judd & Sons. In 1863, Albert purchased the business and sold it back to his uncle, Oliver S. In 1865, Morton and Albert formed their own company to manufacture "Builder's Hardware" in New Haven, CN. In 1870, the business evolved to the Judd Manufacturing Company when Edward, Oliver S.'s brother, became President. In 1877, Morton and his three sons, Albert, Hubert L. & Edward, erected a plant in Wallingford, CN where they began a busness to manufacture Stationers' and Druggists' hardware. It was during this time that the company became well known for their still and mechanical banks. (The first mechanical bank had been introduced in 1869. This bank was known as "Hall's Excelsior" made by J.& E. Stevens.) Judd banks were usually finished in a brown or maroon lacquer and were washed in a green coloring. Not until the early 1910's, did the company start making "Cast Iron " decorative products, such as, Doorstops, Bookends, Doorknockers, Inkwells. The Judd Company was sold to the Stanley Works Company in1954. isshelf

c1920 Royal Order of Jesters Sterling Silver Enamel Pendant 1.25" wide without bail 12.8 grams, marked sterling on rim. No damage to enamel. About Royal Order Of Jesters Founded in 1911, the Royal Order of Jesters functions in connection with Freemasonry and the Shriners. The organization exists for the encouragement of laughter and fun in leisure time, as evidenced by the motto “Mirth is King.” The Royal Order of Jesters draws its name from the licensed court fools in medieval times known as jesters, who not only amused the patrons whom they served, but also assisted in intellectual and cultural development. When the founding members gathered in Hawaii on February 20, 1911, they chose the name of the Royal Order of Jesters to build upon this history and to set the tone for the organization. Led by Noble A.M. Ellison, the original members, known as a cast, consisted of 13 Shriners headed to Aloha Temple on a pilgrimage. The meeting took place in the Captain's Office aboard the S.S. Wilhelmina after a Testimonial Banquet hosted by the ship's captain and officers. Later, at another meeting in 1917, the organization received its current framework, which consists of the Royal Director and 13 other titles that include the Royal Heavy Man, the Royal Serio Comic, the Royal Tragedian, the Royal Impresario, the Royal Light Comedian, the Royal Leading Lady, the Royal Soubrette, the Royal Property Man, and the Royal Constable. All members, referred to as Jesters, join the organization only upon invitation, presuming good-standing membership in the Shriners. In addition to the brotherhood aspects of the organization, the International Royal Order of Jesters maintains a museum in Indiana where it showcases historical articles. These range from items associated with the history of the order itself to pieces related to the work of humorists from the past, including William Shakespeare.

Hawkes in Corning, New York, which is in
Steuben County, from which the company name was derived. Hawkes was the owner of
the largest cut glass firm then operating in Corning. Carder was an Englishman
(born September 18, 1863) who had many years' experience designing glass for
Stevens and Williams in England. Hawkes purchased the glass blanks for his
cutting shop from many sources and eventually wanted to start a factory to make
the blanks himself. Hawkes convinced Carder to come to Corning and manage such a
factory. Carder, who had been passed over for promotion at Stevens and Williams,
consented to do so.

In 1918, Steuben was acquired by Corning Glass Works and became the Steuben
Division.

In July 2008, Steuben was sold by Corning Incorporated for an undisclosed price
to Schottenstein Stores,[2] which also owns 51% of Retail Ventures, a holding
company for DSW, Filene's Basement, and formerly Value City Department Stores;
Value City Furniture, which changed its name to American Signature Furniture;
15% of American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB Capital Group, some 50
shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes, furniture and crystal.

On September 15, 2011, Schottenstein announced it was shutting down Steuben's
Corning factory and Manhattan store, ending the company's 108-year history. Soon
after, Corning Incorporated repurchased the Steuben brand. In early 2014, The
Corning Museum of Glass announced that it would work with independent
contractors to reproduce Steuben using a new, lead-free formula and their
classic leaded crystal.

Carder period (1903-1932)
Steuben Glass Works started operation in October 1903. Carder produced blanks
for Hawkes and also began producing cut glass himself. Carder's great love was
colored glass and had been instrumental in the reintroduction of colored glass
while at Stevens and Williams. When Steuben's success at producing blanks for
Hawkes became assured, Carder began to experiment with colored glass and
continued experiments that were started in England. He soon perfected Gold
Aurene which was similar to iridescent art glass that was being produced by
Tiffany and others. Gold Aurene was followed by a wide range of colored art
glass that eventually was produced in more than 7,000 shapes and 140 colors.

Steuben Glass Works continued to produce glass of all sorts until World War I.
At that time war time restrictions made it impossible for Steuben to acquire the
materials needed to continue manufacture. The company was subsequently sold to
Corning Glass Works and became the Steuben Division. Carder continued as
Division manager without any real change in the company's operation except that
he now had reporting responsibilities to Corning Glass Works' management.
Corning's management tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to limit the articles that
Steuben made to only the most popular. Production continued until about 1932.

In 1932, there was a major change in Steuben management. The nationwide
depression had limited the sale of Steuben and there was a lessening of public
interest in colored glass. In February 1932, John MacKay was appointed to
Carder's position. Carder became Art Director for Corning Glass Works. Steuben
then produced primarily colorless art glass.

Steuben still produced colored art glass, but mostly to fill special orders. A
few new colors were added after Carder transitioned into his new role with
Corning Glass Works, but the last known sale for colored art glass by Steuben
was in 1943

isshelf

c1920's Art Deco Sterling Sugar tongs by Rogers Lunt & Bowlen. 4.75" long 28.2 grams. Lunt Silversmiths began its activity and was incorporated in Greenfield, MA in 1902 as Rogers, Lunt & Bowlen Company. The firm succeeded to A. F. Towle & Son Co purchasing its tools, machinery, trademarks and good-will. The business was managed by George E. Rogers (1849-1915, President and major investor), George Colby Lunt (Treasurer and General Manager) and William Caldwell Bowlen (1868-1934, Vice President and supervisor of manufacturing until his retirement in 1929). George C. Lunt and William C. Bowlen were both qualified members of the staff of the defunct Towle's factory. The company would become a celebrated domestic designer and producer of flatware, hollowware, and giftware for generations to come remaining in Lunt family hands for more than 100 years, making it the oldest continuously operating family-owned silver company in the United States. On April 4, 1912 the RLB trademark obtained the U.S. federal registration under the serial number of 71062653. In 1935 Rogers, Lunt & Bowlen Company's name was shortened to Lunt Silversmiths.

c1920's Boy Scouts of America Troop 29 Wilmington DE. Rare one of a kind Boy scout sign from the first half of the 20th century. 11.5" tall x 8.25" wide without hanger. The hanger has a 29 stamped in the copper and 29 is scratched twice on the back. It has two holes in the bottom of the sign where another sign likely hung below it probably saying "troop 29" This was found by me in Austin, Texas fresh from an Estate but the clues lead me to believe it's from Troop 29 Wilmington DE which was founded in 1919 but closed in 1920 then later opened in 1928. The patina and a lifetime in this business lead me to believe it's either from right at 1919 or 1928, I'm not going to guess which one but I'm 100% sure it's a very old item 80+ years old. The yellow looks like uranium glass to me but I
can't find any of my UV lights at the moment.

André Delattte himself was born in Châtenois, France, in 1887. He first founded
his glass producing company in 1921, close to Nancy. He fabricated engraved
glass objects of the kind which was also sold by Daum and Muller Frères.
Delatte’s cameo vases and bowls were much more interesting: the objects only
incorporated two to three layers of glass, with motives made visible through
acid and only little polishing was done afterwards. The designs were common to
be solid and clean. Although the motives themselves were not innovative and
mostly depicted landscapes and florals, they were attractive to the eye.
