  • c1978 Frank Patania Jr modernist sterling bolo turquoise & Mexican 100 Peso - Estate Fresh Austin

c1978 Frank Patania Jr modernist sterling bolo turquoise & Mexican 100 Peso

    1 in stock

c1978 Frank Patania Jr Southwestern modernist sterling bolo with turquoise and 100 peso Mexican coin. Bolo is 94 grams without the box of course. Comes with original Thunderbird shop box (3 out of 4 corners are split on box top. Bolo slide is 2.5" tall x 2 3/8" wide 38" long. I think this piece had to have been made in 1978, the year the coin was issued, a year or two later at the most. The training Frank Jr. received was a breath of fresh air in the history of contemporary American craft. To understand the importance of this instruction, one must look to Frank Sr., who came to America with his experience of the apprenticeship system from Italy in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. This had a lasting effect on the handmade tradition. Mass production became apart of everyday life. The need for the services of skilled, educated artisans declined, as did the apprenticeship programs that trained them. It was accepted that mass production pieces were in general of better quality than what most people could make. Many craftsmen were forced to close shop and join in the factory ranks as designers. The effect of mass production on jewelry design is evident with a glance of any "Sears and Roebuck" catalogues of the early 20th century. Since these products were being made for the masses, designs were often "dumbed down", reflecting "safe" motifs repeatedly rooted in past trends. Reproduction became the national aesthetic. There were however, "pockets" within the United States that were exceptions. The Kalo Shops and Roycrofter, for example, were teaching apprenticeship programs, but they were small factors compared to the overwhelming impact of mass production.Like many first generation American children, Frank Jr. was encouraged to follow a formal education. Interestingly, he did not choose applied arts, but rather American History, with a minor in Anthropology. Reflecting on his choices, he believes his father would have thought a degree in applied arts would have been "a waste of time," because nothing could compare to the crafts education he had already imparted to his son.By the time Frank Jr. joined the shop full-time, the climate towards crafts had undergone a major change. Postwar America witnessed an explosion in the development of architecture, industrial design, and the handcrafts. For the first time in decades, craft was enjoying a newfound appreciation, much of which was due to en masse support of craftsmen through universities and crafts schools. An indication of the health of the contemporary jewelry movement can be seen in the surge of important exhibitions during the 40s and 50s. The Museum of Modern Art in NYC took an important step by promoting the first major exhibition of contemporary jewelry in 1946. Magazines like Design Quarterly and Craft Horizon (now American Craft) devoted full sections to design and contemporary jewelry.By the 1950s, a number of people were making contemporary jewelry on a professional scale. That same year, The American Craft council held its first conference, attended by over 450 crafts men and women from 30 states. During the three day conference they addressed many concerns of the young craftsman, including: 1) the craftsmen's relationship to society in economics and social aesthetics; 2) design importance as it related to techniques; and 3) problems in professional practices in the small business. While many young craftsmen in the United States were just addressing these issues for the first time, The Thunderbird Shop of Tucson and Santa Fe had already found resolution in regards to these problems and had implemented them in to a system that allowed the creativity of the shop to flourish while maintaining financial success.Today, Frank, Jr. and his wife Donna travel between Tucson and Santa Fe. Frank, Jr. says he is grateful for the life he has been given, acknowledging his joy in being able to do what his loves for a living and finally arriving at a place in which he can create the pieces he chooses without the pressures of the market. (Fig 25-27) He looks to his son, Sam, to carry on the family name and traditions, recognizing the struggle of a young designer with a family and the pressures to meet payroll while still maintain ones own inimitable style.

7" Roderick Tenorio (1955-2013), Santo Domingo Pueblo, Sterling silver Bracelet

    1 in stock

Roderick Tenorio (1955-2013), Santo Domingo Pueblo, Sterling silver Bracelet in the overlay style Fits up to a 7" wrist, this is the real deal, made by Roderick by hand....not the mass produced stuff he designed for others later. You really don't find the pieces like this that he made himself on the open market very often.Roderick Tenorio, Santo Domingo Pueblo, 1955-2013Roderick Tenorio expressed his appreciation for the fruitfulness of the earth in his “Gentle Rain” jewelry collection. Roderick’s trademark symbols, comprised of 14 karat gold and etched sterling silver represent the rain katcina, the sun, moon, and sacred corn. Roderick took home the Best of show award at the 2001 Eight Northern Indian Pueblo Arts and Crafts Fair for an outstanding gold concho belt, which won major awards at other shows throughout the southwest over the same year.Roderick Tenorio was an award winning Santo Domingo artist. A 1981 graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts, Roderick was accomplished in sculpture, painting and music. Roderick’s unique symbolic interpretation and high degree of detail earned him jewelry awards at Santa Fe Indian Market, Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Show, the New Mexico State Fair, and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonials, including the prestigious “Best of Show”.Roderick loved creating jewelry. “I’m a very lucky man,” he had said quietly. “I was born with a certain amount of talent in art, and I had family, friends and teachers who encouraged me to develop my abilities. Today, I have the advantage of incorporating many centuries of tribal history, , myths and characters into my designs. I’m far less interested in defining my jewelry as traditional or contemporary than I am in striving for beauty…and I’m willing to let my work follow any direction needed to realize that end.”Roderick was born at home between April 28th and May 1st, 1955. The actual date is unwritten and may have been concealed by his parents to avoid having to “feed the people” of the village had he been born on May 1st the day when the pueblo celebrates San Felipe, it’s Patron Saint. He was raised by his Grandparents near the plaza in Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico.Roderick did not finish Bernalillo High but went instead to Albuquerque Indian School. He remembered writing three poems for the AIS yearbook and having one of them published. A teacher in the Band Room asked him what he wanted to play and he was given a clarinet. After a year of clarinet Roderick started singing. He even performed with a traveling ensemble as a singer.Enlisting in the Army after high school, Roderick was stationed in Lewitsburg, Germany for 2 1/2 years working Field communications. Friends wanted Roderick to leave the service and stay in Germany as a singer in their band. Roderick chose to return to Santo Domingo. For Roderick, Santo Domingo was not the same. He had grown 12 inches while in the service and became a threat on his return. He felt alienated and that he no longer fit. He began drinking and wound up staring at a sculpture in Santa Fe. A security officer from the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) asked him if he was looking for the registrar. The guard escorted him to the office of the school where he found his aunt working. She helped him complete the paperwork to become a student using his G. I. Bill. Roderick was one of the older students. He bought alcohol for the others students and “everybody loved him.”Roderick’s two years of study at IAIA were a turning point in his life. He began to really focus on his art work. He graduated with a degree in three Dimensional art. He liked sculpting stone or wood and sold his sculpture at the Museum shop.Roderick started making jewelry when he was very young and by the age of 13 he was making “superfine” heishi of turtle shell, turquoise, and pin shell. His grandmother had a grinder and polisher that ran from the slow steady power of an old refrigerator motor. Roderick sold his heishi to nearby gallery owners in Santa Fe. He recalled doing very well in Gallup with heishi made with distinctive stone combinations. He sold everything and came home with $1,500. In High School Roderick drove a new pick up truck supported by his heishi sales. With awards he won in competition, Roderick purchased a prefabricated steel trailer, and moved his bench into a 10 x 10 studio.Reticulation describes a sequential process of heating silver to a dark, dull red color with a torch sufficient to cause oxidation of the copper on the surface. The silver is then quenched in a hot pickle solution, soaked to remove the oxidation, and rinsed with water. The procedure is repeated three to five times diminishing in effectiveness yet increasing the depth of the fine silver surface. The deeper the pure silver, the more pronounced the effect. The surface layer, crinkles as it cools and at a different rate than the layer beneath, the process creates texture that catches your eye and makes you want to reach out and touch the surface. Silver reticulation ads contrast, texture, and depth. It produces a beautifully patterned surface, ideal for a wide range of jewelry designs.Roderick combined noble metals, semiprecious gemstones in a fashion and style all his own. Tribal Expressions proudly boasts of being one of the few to represent the sublime and the substantial creations of Roderick Tenorio, from Santo Domingo Pueblo.Roderick passed away in 2013, we miss his soft spoken voice and the way he explained the inspirations behind his beautiful, cool jewelry. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed,

Early Native American Beaded Amulet/points/large necklace beads

    1 in stock

Early Native American Beaded Amulet/points/large necklace beads. I'm assuming<br>these beads went on a necklace and this pendant hung on that and that it was<br>sometime in the 19th century. I found this pile together in a small box in a<br>drawer of a local estate I purchased the entire contents of years ago. The<br>pendant is 3 3/8" wide and oobviously missing some of the outer beads which<br>appear to be shell or seeds of some sort. The points are high quality, sharp and<br>thin. These are unrelated items as the points are much older than the pendant<br>but they were kept together for possibly generations and found together by me.<br>nativedrawer

Nice<br>large cuff 42.8 grams, marked and tested sterling with no other markings. 6.5"<br>including the 1.25" gap 1.5" wide in center.<br><br><br>Hubbell beads were glass beads imported from Italy, Bohemia and later<br>Czechoslovakia. Though there is not significant evidence the practice was be by<br>Lorenzo Hubbell, owner of Hubbell Trading Post, the beads have become associated<br>with his name. They were purchased as a less expensive way of producing jewelry.<br>Since the traders often supplied the Native artists with the materials for<br>jewelry sold at the trading posts, the traders looked for ways to lower the<br>costs of producing enough jewelry to meet the market demand. They found one way<br>through the cottage crafters in areas such as Czechoslovakia.<br><br>By the turn of the twentieth century, Czech bead makers were exporting large<br>quantities of glass beads to a worldwide market. They came in a wide array of<br>shapes, sizes and colors. Ones imported to the Southwest were shaped and colored<br>to resemble the turquoise and coral used in Native American jewelry. While their<br>use may have been only a substitute for the real gems that make up true handmade<br>jewelry from the Southwest, their import helped families in areas such as<br>Bohemia make a living during the tumultuous times in Europe.

sz7.75 Felicita Eustace (1927-2016) Cochiti pueblo sterling carved turquoise and coral ring 8 grams. Felicita Eustace Felicita was born in 1927 and raised at Cochiti Pueblo. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said. The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. It wasn’t the designs they were talking about, it was the technical aspects of our work: setting stones, welds, engravings and so on. They were the ones who would be selling these items for us, so they would make sure that a certain standard of quality was being met.”All precious metals are tested and guaranteed,

6 3/8" Jared Chavez San Felipe Sterling silver heavily worked bracelet, clean<br>with no issues. Unmarked, purchased directly from the Artist in 2002. With<br>obvious quality, style, and workmanship. I've had quite a few both Richard and<br>Jared Chavez pieces that weren't marked but were purchased directly from them.<br><br><br>Jared J. Chavez<br>I began my journey as an artist learning to craft jewelry from my father,<br>Richard I Chavez, a renowned lapidary artist. I was not given exact direction as<br>to what to make but was only given the tools and instruction on how to use them.<br>Along the way my work would be critiqued by my father and I would continually<br>strive to evolve my designs and fabrication processes. He stressed the quality<br>of the design and construction making sure that every aspect of a piece looked<br>“finished” and no corners were cut.<br><br>Along with all that I learned in my father’s studio, I would receive a Bachelor<br>of Arts from Georgetown University in Studio Arts with a focus in Digital Art<br>and Printmaking. After I graduated, I would attend The Revere Academy of Jewelry<br>Arts’, Intensive Bench Jeweler Program in San Francisco. Each of these<br>educational experiences added a particular technical or visual aspect to my work<br>and would encourage me to continue to explore all the ways I could enhance my<br>designs.<br><br>My current work focuses on the reflective nature of polished silver. Though<br>fabrication, metal stamping, and some casting, I explore how light and<br>reflection interacts with the materials I utilize. I’ve found that polished<br>silver takes in the colors and the light of the world around, and through the<br>use of surface texture a dynamic play of light is created across the surface of<br>my designs. I further enhance my work thought the use of semi-precious stones<br>(agates, quartz, jades, etc.). However one of the most important qualities in my<br>selection of stones is often translucency. I’ve found that by allowing light to<br>shine though a stone an overall rich and warm effect is created in the overall<br>design.<br><br>Along with my yearly schedule of shows where I sell my designs, I’ve also made<br>it a point to educate the public about my work. Growing up in my father’s<br>studio, I always saw just how much of himself he put into his designs and how<br>sometimes he was met with disbelief as to how much work was put into his pieces.<br>I found this to be a similar case when I entered the business, as the general<br>public only sees the finished piece. For that reason, though in person<br>demonstrations and self-produced video mini-documentaries, we’ve made it a point<br>to show the skill, time, and passion that goes into every design. I continually<br>strive to evolve my work and hold every design to the exacting standards that my<br>father established when he created Chavez Studio 50 years ago.<br><br>All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry<br>referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)<br>silver and possibly higher content. 1 in stock

Jolene Eustace (Cochiti/Zuni) 18k/14k/sterling Carved Turquoise, coral, and<br>shell necklace. Jolene is an extremely talented artisan, the galleries that<br>carried her work seem to be mostly out of stock. I believe she has always been<br>quality over quantity, producing a very limited amount of jewelry as you can<br>tell she invests a lot more time/skill/money into her pieces than a large<br>percentage of todays Native American artisans'. Amazing piece as shown. Bottom<br>piece has 18k, 14k, and sterling(marked and tested), two side pieces 14k and<br>sterling. Approximately 17" total length, 144.6 grams total weight.<br><br>Jolene A. Eustace-Hanelt is respected as a master jeweler. She comes from a<br>family of jewelers and potters. She grew up helping her parents. In a cover<br>story for Indian Artist Magazine, Jolene shared: "I was eight when I made my<br>first piece. I got an order to do 100 tie tacks...That was over 100 bucks." She<br>bought a 10 speed bike with the money. She added, "Then I realized I could be<br>self-sufficient with my work as an artist...My work is my release. My work is my<br>meditation. It's a way of going back to Mother Earth." (Zuni/Cochiti, active<br>1985=-present: contemporary, gold, silver leaf, set stones jewelry, alabaster<br>sculptures)<br><br>(A note from Keishi Jewelers a retailer of her wearable art) Sharing our Keshi<br>"Jolene" story: Jolene is (obviously) quite a beautiful woman, and the staff of<br>Keshi commonly referred to her as "the jewelry dess." One day, someone fessed up<br>and told Jolene what she'd been nicknamed, and her reply was "I'm not the<br>jewelry dess, I MAKE jewelry FOR desses!" That response certainly endeared her<br>to us even more!<br><br>Jolene is a daughter of well-known artists Ben and Felicita Eustace. Ben, from<br>Zuni, was a jeweler who, in turn taught his Cochiti wife Felicita the art of<br>jewelry making. Felicita is also a potter, specializing in traditionally made<br>storytellers. The Eustaces passed their demand for quality on to their 13<br>children, including Jolene.<br><br>Jolene was educated at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. She<br>learned jewelry making from her parents and Hopi jeweler Duane Maktima. She has<br>been fabricating jewelry since the mid-80s.<br><br>Always seeking challenges, Jolene relocated to Essen, Germany in the mid-1990s<br>with her German-born former husband and infant son. Several times a week, she<br>commuted by train between her home and Europe’s renowned art school, the<br>Künstakadamie, in Düsseldorf. There she studied frawing and painting. Jolene is<br>a recipient of a fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts<br>(SWAIA) and has worked with SWAIA’s mentor program, teaching jewelry techniques<br>to Native students.<br><br>Jolene’s jewelry is characterized by the quality of materials and its striking<br>individuality. She says, “Whoever said you have to play by the rules? I want my<br>jewelry to say something. It cannot be just jewelry. In my jewelry, design and<br>fabrication have to deal with personal experiences and traditional values<br>conflicting and collaborating with present society.”<br><br>Jolene’s parents once said to their children, “If you’re going to do jewelry at<br>tall, you have to do it our way, the right way.” It wasn’t the designs they were<br>talking about, it was the technical aspects of their work: setting stones,<br>welds, and engravings. From the time of their training, the Eustace kids learned<br>a respect for materials and techniques of their art.<br><br>Jolene’s hallmark is a stamped “JAE” and a trademark design which represents<br>sage that was designed by her Dad long ago.<br><br>Tribal Affiliation<br>Cochiti/Zuni<br><br>All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry<br>referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)<br>silver and possibly higher content. 6.5" Mike Bird Romero San Juan and Taos Pueblo Agate and Onyx bracelet, fits up<br>to a 6.5" wrist with no issues.<br><br>Mike Bird-Romero is an accomplished jeweler known for his technical mastery,<br>innovation, and respect for historical techniques and designs. Born in 1946 in<br>San Juan Pueblo, his artistic interests were fostered in a household of<br>creativity. His grandmother Luteria Atencio was a respected potter whose works<br>are in the Smithsonian Institution. His mother Lorencita Bird was an<br>accomplished and well-known Pueblo textile artist and educator. After learning<br>some basic metal-working skills in junior high school, Mike began serious work<br>with metals in the late 1960s, teaching himself from books on the topic and<br>buying some old tools while making others. By the 1980s, Mike had emerged as a<br>major figure in contemporary Native American jewelry making. Selecting only the<br>best, most dramatic materials, Mike became known for bold, sculptural<br>interpretations of traditional designs.<br><br>Although he is largely a self-taught artist, Mike’s work has been influenced<br>both by extensive research into historic Navajo and Pueblo jewelry and by<br>observing great silversmiths who lived near his home including Mark Chee and<br>Julian Lovato. A true student of Pueblo tradition, Mike is inspired by old<br>photographs of Indians wearing historical jewelry. “I am trying to revive the<br>old jewelry,” he explains.<br><br>Mike’s hallmark, two small birds, is found on the back of his pieces.<br><br>Tribal Affiliation<br>San Juan and Taos Pueblo<br><br>All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry<br>referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)<br>silver and possibly higher content.
