Felicita was a potter and silversmith.<br><br>Felicita was born in 1927 and raised at Cochiti Pueblo. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said.<br><br>The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.<br><br>Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. It wasn’t the designs they were talking about, it was the technical aspects of our work: setting stones, welds, engravings and so on. They were the ones who would be selling these items for us, so they would make sure that a certain standard of quality was being met.”<br><br><br> Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Ring is size 8, everything is large and great. Tape measure and penny for scale.<br><br>Few silversmiths match the power and artistry of Art Tafoya. He specializes in silver. Hammered silver. The old way. Art Tafoya carries on that tradition of the early masters, for he makes his own stamps and dies. Art’s clear and crisp stamp work speaks of skill and talent born of that tradition. Thick silver, hammered like leather, only deeper, brisk, clear and lovely.<br><br>Art Tafoya, silversmith and artist, learned the basics of silversmithing at the age to twelve from a blacksmith at a riding stable near his home. Later he learned the art of making handmade stamps and dies from Carlos White Eagle, a former student of the legendary Navajo silversmith Fred Peshlakai. Art has made an exhaustive study of Fred Peshlakai’s stamps and is an expert at identifying even unsigned work by this master. All of Art’s stamps and dies are his own creations. He specializes in hand stamped old-style jewelry reminiscent of Peshlakai’s, but definitely all of his own.<br><br>His original jewelry is highly sought after by collectors worldwide. He was a silversmith in residence at The Turquoise Shop at Knotts Berry Farm in California for twenty-five years before relocating to New Mexico. Selling the 3 pairs shown, largest 1.25" long, 19.7 grams total.<br><br>Jules Brenner and Henry Steig were among group of prominent of New York<br>mid-century studio jewelers who hand-crafted pieces of wearable art that<br>celebrated the avant-garde, rejected traditional jewelry forms, and appealed to<br>an intellectual and liberal middle class. Jules Brenner was born in the Bronx,<br>grew up in Washington Heights, and studied acting with Stella Adler and painting<br>and sculpture in Greenwich Village. Henry Steig (also known as Henry Anton)<br>studied at City College and the National Academy of Design, and began his career<br>as a New York City jazz musician, writer, novelist, cartoonist, and painter.<br>During the 1950s, both Brenner and Steig operated shops and studios in Manhattan<br>and in Provincetown, Massachusetts—then a prominent artists’ enclave—where they<br>sold hand-wrought silver and gold designs which often emphasized biomorphic,<br>surrealist, cubist, and geometric forms.<br><br><br>Everyone knows the famous picture from the film The Seven Year Itch, of Marilyn<br>Monroe standing on a New York sidewalk, her skirt blown up by on updraft from<br>the subway grate below. However, not everyone knows that at that moment she was<br>standing in front of Henry Steig's jewelry shop at 590 Lexington Avenue.<br>Henry Steig was a man of many talents. Before he became a jeweler, he was a jazz<br>musician, painter, sculptor, commercial artist, cartoonist, photographer, short<br>story writer and novelist.<br><br>"Henry was a Renaissance man," says New Yorker cartoonist Mischa Richter, who<br>was Steig's good friend and Provincetown neighbor.<br><br>Henry Anion Steig was born on February 19, 1906, in New York City. His parents,<br>Joseph and Laura, had come to America at the turn of the century, from Lvov<br>(called Lemberg in German), which was then in the Polish port of the<br>Austro-Hungarian Empire. Joseph was a housepainter and Laura, a seamstress.<br><br>They had four sons, Irwin, Henry, William and Arthur, all of them versatile,<br>talented and artistic. William Steig is the well-known New Yorker cartoonist and<br>author-illustrator of children's books. lrwin was a writer of short stories for<br>the New Yorker. Arthur was a painter and poet whose poems were published in the<br>New Republic and Poetry magazines.<br><br>William Steig recalls, "My father and mother both began pointing and become<br>exhibiting artists after their sons grew up." In the May 14, 1945, issue of<br>Newsweek magazine, an article was published about an exhibition, "possibly the<br>first one family show on Art Row (57th Street)" at the New Art Circle Gallery.<br>It was called "The Eight Performing Steigs, Artists All." Included were<br>paintings By Joseph and Laura Steig; drawings and sculpture by William and<br>paintings by his wife, Liza; paintings by Arthur and his wife, Aurora; and<br>photographs by Henry and paintings by his wife, Mimi. The only brother not<br>included was Irwin, "the only non-conformist Steig," who was working at that<br>time as advertising manager of a Connecticut soap manufacturer.<br><br>In the article "the brothers attribute the family's abundance of good artists to<br>the fact that we all like each other's work…get excited about it. Whenever<br>anyone starts they get lots of encouragement. Joseph Steig adds, 'Painting is a<br>contagious thing. If you lived in our environment, you would probably point.'"<br><br>Henry Steig grew up in this extraordinary environment. The family lived in the<br>Bronx. After graduating from high school, Henry Steig went to City College<br>(CCNY). After three years he left to study painting and sculpture at the<br>National Academy of Design. He was also an accomplished musician, playing<br>saxophone, violin and classical guitar, and while he was in college, he began<br>working as a jazz musician. From about 1922, when only sixteen years old, until<br>1932 he played reed instruments with local dance bands.<br><br>After four years at the National Academy, Steig worked as a commercial artist<br>and cartoonist. He signed his cartoons "Henry Anton" because his brother William<br>was working as a cartoonist at the same time, for many of the same magazines.<br>From about 1932 to 1936, Henry Anton cartoons appeared in Life, Judge, New<br>Yorker and other magazines.<br><br>Steig began a writing career in 1935 that lasted until about 1947. He became<br>very successful and well known as a short story writer, with stories appearing<br>regularly in Saturday Evening Post, New Yorker, Esquire, Colliers and others.<br>They were often humorous tales about jazz and the jazz musicians who populated<br>the world of music in the roaring twenties. Other stories were about his Bronx<br>childhood. He also wrote nonfiction magazine pieces, including a New Yorker<br>profile of Benny Goodmon and jazz criticism. Henry Steig (1906-1973) Modernist sterling freeform pin and screw back earrings<br>set 2 5/8" x 2 1/8", earrings 1". 14 grams total weight.<br><br>Jules Brenner and Henry Steig were among group of prominent of New York<br>mid-century studio jewelers who hand-crafted pieces of wearable art that<br>celebrated the avant-garde, rejected traditional jewelry forms, and appealed to<br>an intellectual and liberal middle class. Several of his nonfiction articles<br>were illustrated by William Steig.<br><br>In 1941 , Alfred A. Knopf published Henry Steig's novel, Send Me Down. Her greatest success, however, came as a jewelry manufacturer when she started a company in 1987 called Medalias by Foree Hunsicker. At one time employing nearly fifty people, Medalias specialized in luggage tag jewelry, reproducing in sterling silver a wide variety of Victorian-era luggage tags and fashioning them into earrings, necklaces, and other accessories. A fixture for many years in the North Texas design world and at the Apparel Mart, Foree was honored with a Dallas Fashion Award in 1995.

  • Navajo Ray Tracey Knifewing modernist Sterling Inlaid Earrings - Estate Fresh Austin

Navajo Ray Tracey Knifewing modernist Sterling Inlaid Earrings

    1 in stock

Navajo Ray Tracey Knifewing Modernistic Inlaid Earrings 1.25" wide square. Light scratches, no deep scratches, bends, or damage to stones. The Creative Process Fueled by Inspiration “God blesses everyone with a variety of gifts and talents.” The Creator blessed Ray with the spirit of Creativity. Inspiration is the basis for his creative spirit. Inspiration arrives in many forms and disguises when least expected. Hiking the canyons of the Southwest, where his ancestors did the same, gives Ray a feeling of reverence. Walking in peace with gratitude and thanksgiving opens up the senses to receive ideas. Petroglyphs carved on canyon walls turns into wearable art. Stories from an ancient past are re-lived on the faces of Yei pendants. The evening sky’s transformation of color inspired the Earth and Sky jewelry line. Once while golfing, a white butterfly landed on Ray’s golf bag and accompanied him down the fairway. This incident brought the Butterfly and Dragonfly design concept to reality. Having awareness of this special gift, he aspires to know the origin. Artist Ray Tracey has had a life-long love of jewelry. As a child growing up in Sawmill, AZ, Asa Tracey, his Grandfather, influenced him with his stories of working the goat bellows for his uncle. Asa would pump the goat bellows all day long to fuel the fire in the forge that would melt silver in a small cast iron crucible. This process was very labor intensive and his grandfather hated it. The molten silver would then be poured into a tufa stone mold to form an ingot. The jeweler would then execute his craft and a new piece of jewelry would be created. “I wanted to see finished jewelry and wanted to learn everything I could. Whenever we would go to Gallup, NM, I would visit curio stores to see creations in silver.” Ray spent time viewing jewelry designs at the Gallup Intertribal Indian Ceremonial and at the Navajo Nation Fair. Anywhere, there was jewelry on display; Ray could be seen viewing the works of art. Ray’s family moved to Ganado, AZ when he was six years old. One summer day when he was nine years old, he complained to his mother of how bored he was. The next day his mother enrolled him into summer school and changed his life forever. He went straight to art class and found a silver smithing table in the corner. He remembered his grandfather’s stories and the rest is history.  “In class I fabricated my first ring out of silver for my Mother. I found an unknown stone and made a cabochon. I tried to copy an old style ring design that I had seen at Hubbells Trading Post. One teardrop flanked the sides of the stone. It was a very simple design but it took me a week to finish. I kept melting the silver. I made my next silver and stone creation at the age of 21 and gave it to my mother. It was another ring, but this time it was a split shank with three ribs and three tear drops on the side of the stone.” I told my father, I want to make jewelry for the rest of my life.” Ray continued making jewelry while attending Brigham Young University. Studying chemistry and physics by day and making jewelry at night. “The designs were simple, my first love was Old Style Navajo jewelry. Weekends were spent traveling to Gallup, NM, to sell his work. While at BYU another opportunity arose to express his creativity—acting. “I wasn’t a very good student so Hollywood had an instant appeal. My gift of creativity carried over into acting. Acting was just another outlet of creative expression.” His adventurous nature allowed Ray to spend several years as an actor in feature films and television. This acting detour never made him lose interest in jewelry design. Eventually, Ray’s love of jewelry brought him back to New Mexico to permanently pursue this art form. “One time while traveling to Albuquerque from Gallup, I noticed the horizon over Laa Pueblo. I saw steps on a mesa. I incorporated this imagery of tiered steps into a bracelet design.” “Another time, while golfing at Hobble Creek Golf Course, I saw pebbles aligned in a  row on the river bottom. Those pebbles became my inspiration to place them on the sides of an inlaid bracelet.” “Sometimes my creativity comes to a screeching halt. When this happens I go to my roots; Old Style jewelry. That is the place of fascination. The Old Ones utilized rudimentary tools to create their simple, yet perfected, pieces of craftsmanship. From this point I am able to create from an inspiring idea. On the flip side, sometimes my mind becomes flooded with more designs than I can remember. Ideas come so quickly I can’t draw them fast enough.” “When I see someone wearing one of my designs, it takes me back to the time when the piece was created. Sometimes I can recall what I was eating or even the music I was listening to. I will remember the inspiration that helped create that design.” Ray has found his path or gift of self-expression that has blessed, enlightened, and influenced his life and others. Awareness of this special gift, fuels his energy and creativity. Inspiration helps to translate his creativity into artistic-visual expression. His creations stand as transitional figures from traditional to contemporary.  He creates something good as he is drawn toward untouched fields of yet-to-be-discovered imagery. Unknowingly he is creating a legacy from which generations can learn and grow. Ray has learned to appreciate and embrace the journey of life and its gifts.

Matilde Eugenia Poulat introduced MATL in 1934 and, since her death in 1960, her designs and techniques have been carried on by her nephew, Ricardo Salas. For sr. Salas, who can recite poetry in the language of the Aztecs, the mark matl, has greater meaning in its reference to the Nahuatl or Aztec word for water, atl.As a young woman, Matilde Poulat studied painting at the prestigious San Carlos academy of fine arts in Mexico city, she went on to teach painting classes at an art school until her interest turned exclusively to silver. Matilde Poulat´s designs for jewelry and figures were part of the new cultural vision among Mexico’s intellectuals after the revolution in 1920s, artists were searching for Mexican aesthetic, rejection European subjects in favor of the art of the pre-conquest Indians and of the Mexican pueblos. Sra. Poulat found inspiration in the mextec gold jewelry discovered in 1932 at Monte Alban. Her choice of motifs the dove, flowers, and tiny bells are reminiscent of the whimsical subjects of contemporary Mexican folk art.Matilde Poulat received international recognition for her jewelry when she was asked in 1941 to participate in an exhibit of Latin American silver at the pan American union in Washington, D.C. as a result of increasing demand for matl silver during world war ii , the number of silversmiths in the taller increased to thirty-three. In 1950, Srta. Poulat and her nephew opened a showroom on the first floor of her home, where she also had the workshop. Ricardo Salas recalls that they made three thousand types of silver jewelry and one hundred different pieces.Ricardo Salas worked closely with his aunt from the time he was eleven years of age. He says she recognized his artistic talent when she saw him do a play with puppets he had made himself. Sr. Salas was sent to the San Carlos academy, where he received the premio Diego Rivera. As a youth, he learned the techniques of the silversmith and perfected the carving of "Off White", coral, turquoise, and other stones used in the jewelry and figurines. From sr. Salas perspective, he and his aunt collaborated so closely as designers, that there really cannot be a comparison of their work.In 1955, William Spratling wrote of Matilde Poulat: “she has continued to produce some of the most charming native jewelry in Mexico, intensely her own. Her jewelry has the same charm and delightful surface and colorful quality of the old lacquer work of Uruapan. Spratling`s admiration for matl silver reflects his recognition of their shared appreciation for Mexican native art. This mutual inspiration led each of the two artists in different directions within the same medium. The exuberance of matl silver resembles the interiors of the churches in Puebla, like the chapel of Santa Maria Tonantzintla, where Indians covered the interior of the dome with polychromed and gilded angels. In matl silver, the introduction of color is accomplished with bits of coral, turquoise, and amethyst quartz. The surfaces are decorated with applied wire and elaborated with embossing and repousse of astounding complexity (pl.XXIII-1, XXIII-10). Matilde Poulat and Ricardo Salas have been successful in incorporating the artistic language of the Mixtecs into jewelry and silver figures with imagination, drama, and with a style that is completely personal.
