Oscar Betz southwestern sterling silver turquoise, spiny oyster, lapis earrings. Great earrings with no issues, tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver, any marks detected, weight, and measurements will be shown in the pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Oscar Betz moved to Jerome, Arizona sometime between 1967 and 1979. He was among the many hippies, renegades, freethinkers, and artists who relocated to Arizona’s richest copper mining city during those years. Many of his later years were spent in anta Fe, New Mexico. He is now recognized as a renowned silversmith. His work has been featured in galleries and movies, and also worn by many celebrities. His work is highly collectible. Oscar Betz‘s work was most prominent in the 1970‘s and 1980‘s. His pieces were actively sought out and purchased by Hollywood celebrities as well as collectors of fine one-of-a-kind handmade Indian jewelry. He was one of the first southwest artists to use many different stones together in one piece of jewelry. Oscar‘s work remains in high demand today.Sought after by the likes of Ralph Lauren in the early 90‘s Oscar crossed over into the fashion world with his remarkable jewelry. Part of the popularity of the Betz earrings was that for their size they are well balanced and easy to wear. Designs are set on 2 part silver frames that are hinged. Betz’s pieces include earrings, pendants, and pins in sterling silver and turquoise. He is most well-known for a collaborative design he created with Rocki Gorman and made a place for himself in Southwestern culture with his highly sought after chandelier earrings. These are typically sterling silver, set with turquoise, spiny oyster, variscite, amethyst, and agate. Other earring designs of this type incorporate a variety of stones that include coral and black onyx and frequently using rare and other high end stones. Rocki Gorman continues the Betz tradition with her jewelry. Among his other notable creations are Navajo Sterling Silver cuff bracelets that have a three-dimensional design with excellent engraving. Oscar Getz is now retired. His son, L’Mont Betz, who learned the jewelry business from his father, has been running his own shop called, ‘Broken Wing Designs’ since 1983 where he sells designs created by Oscar and keeps the family tradition alive.

Rubber replacement backs as shown. Leo Feeney 1948-2025) Leo Feeney has been designing his southwest style jewelry for more than thirty-five years. He was first introduced to southwest style jewelry in Flagstaff, Arizona. The jewelry of the Zuni Pueblo had a great influence on his style. He uses a mixture of semi-precious and precious stones to create his one of a kind artistic jewelry. The son of a Navy career father, Leo Feeney moved around the United States frequently–from Key West, Florida as a child, to Emmaus, Pennsylvania for high school graduation. After attending a local community college, a silversmith professor took a strong interest in Leo’s work and an apprenticeship was born. Over the years, Leo learned numerous silversmith techniques and began to hone his craft with contemporary jewelry styles. In 1971, while visiting Havasupai in the Grand Canyon, Leo met his now wife, Emily, and relocated to her home town in Flagstaff, Arizona. This move inspired him to study different jewelry styles including the rich history of Native American design. It wasn’t long before he opened a store in a building owned by his father-in-law and began selling his unique Southwestern style jewelry. Greatly influenced by Zuni designs, Leo mixes precious and semi-precious stones to create his unique pieces. His signature cluster-style settings featuring intricate stone patterning is highly regarded in the jewelry community. Leo currently resides in Arizona with his family.

Unmarked, attributed to Lambert Homer Sr. Homer, Lambert Sr. Biography (1917-1972)Widely recognized as a fine lapidarist, Lambert Homer collaborated with other artists who worked with trader C. G. Wallace. He is perhaps best known for pieces featuring intricate mosaic inlay on spiny oyster shell that closely resemble shell inlay work found at prehistoric Southwestern sites. After removing the spines from these distinctively coral-colored shells, Homer inlaid them with white shell, turquoise and jet, creating vibrant geometric patterns. Some of his most spectacular pieces are belts with conchas of inlaid spiny oyster shell. Homer also made inlaid Knife Wings and Rainbow Gods, and he is credited with the first use of the Gan dancer as a jewelry design motif. Zuni artists with whom Lambert Homer collaborated include Dan Simplicio, Leo Poblano, Ida Poblano, and his son Lambert Homer, Jr. He also worked with Navajo silver-workers Roger Skeet and Charlie Bitsui. Lambert, who was married to Juanita Homer, and his brother Bernard, who was married to Alice Homer, worked closely with their wives, both of whom were daughters of Leekya.

Ike Wilson (1900-1942) Navajo large sterling silver dangly hand stamped earrings
Ike Wilson (1900-1942) Navajo large sterling silver dangly hand stamped earrings. Great earrings with no issues, tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver, any marks detected, weight, and measurements will be shown in the pictures. Circa second quarter of the 20th century. Diné silversmith Ike Wilson worked for many years for the Kelsey Trading Company at Zuni. He did silverwork for many of the Zuni lapidary artists including Ida Vacit Poblano. He often collaborated with his wife, Katherine Wilson. Navajo Nation artist Ike Wilson (1900-1942) would sign his creations with his bow and arrow hallmark. There has been some confusion in the past about the hallmark of Ike Wilson (1901-1942). It seems that sometimes his work was attributed to Austin Wilson. Both men were born in the same year and in a similar area of the reservation and both men worked at times for trader C. G. Wallace and the Kelsey Trading Company. Ike Wilsons work is signed with a bow and arrow. After his death in 1942, his wife Katherine Wilson (1907-1985) continued to use his hallmark. The bow and arrow hallmark was initially attributed to Ikes contemporary, Austin Wilson, but the corrected attribution was published in Messier, 2014.

Vintage H. Fred Skaggs southwestern modernist sterling silver clip-on earrings
H. Fred Skaggs southwestern modernist sterling silver clip-on earrings. Great earrings with no damage or significant wear. Fantastic design and execution, strong springs on clips. Weight and measurements in the pictures. H. Fred Skaggs was a prominent metalsmith who worked in the American Southwest beginning in the mid-1950s. He is also known for inspiring and training other artisans with his knowledge of silversmithing. Some of his pieces display traditional Southwestern designs and elements, while others are purely Modernist in nature. H. Fred Skaggs began his jewelry-making career in 1956. He was part of the community of artists who set up shop in the Lloyd Kiva Craft Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. Kiva‘s vision offered them a place to learn from one another as artisans while plying their respective crafts. Several Native American silversmiths, notably Hopi artisan Charles Loloma, were influenced by Skaggs‘ work. A potter by trade, Loloma was encouraged by and apprenticed to Skaggs, who taught him the art of silversmithing. While most of his jewelry was crafted of silver, Skaggs did work in karat gold occasionally. Given the style of the gold pieces collectors run across, they were likely commissioned by his clientele. Many of his silver jewelry designs were embellished with semi-precious gemstones. Skaggs was active as a jewelry craftsman until he died in 1983.

Vintage 1940's UITA-26 Navajo sterling silver turquoise screw back earrings
Vintage 1940‘s UITA-26 Navajo sterling silver turquoise screw back earrings. Great earrings with no issues, tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver, marks, weight, and measurements will be shown in the pictures. Circa second quarter of the 20th century, In 1931, a group of trading post owners and operators founded the United Indian Traders Association (UITA), a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the authenticity of Native American arts and crafts. B.I. Staples was named the first president of the association. The first offices were at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association hogan on Santa Fe Plaza in Gallup, New Mexico. The UITA‘s stated goals were: 1) to promote improved business practices among Indian traders, arts and crafts dealers, Indians, and all related agencies; 2) to promote, encourage, and protect the manufacture and sale of genuine Indian handmade arts and crafts; and 3) to promote the general welfare of those engaged in the business of Indian trading, as well as the welfare of the Navajo Indians and all other Indians of North America. The UITA addressed issues of importance to traders primarily on the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni reservations. One major concern was whether imitation Native American arts and crafts should be allowed to be sold anywhere on the reservations. Along with lease negotiations with the tribal governments came the issue of whether a trader could dig a private well on the trading post lease site. Taxation was also a major topic. Should traders pay property tax on the reservation to the county or state government? The intersection of tribal, county, state, and national governments on the reservations complicated these questions, and the UITA could and did employ lawyers to help settle the questions.

Wichita jewelry designer Dina Huntinghorse incorporates a blend of traditional and contemporary jewelry techniques to create masterful works of wearable art. Although gold and silver work is rarely seen among the tribes of the Great Plains, Dina‘s life experiences introduced her to the craft, and inspired her to develop her own unique style. Raised in southwestern Oklahoma, Dina‘s first love was of horses, and she learned to reproduce their likeness in pencil sketches and paintings. She was later taught the traditional art of beadwork by an aunt, and became known for her beaded deerskin purses. In 1989, her interest in jewelry was piqued when her late husband, Navajo jeweler Herbert Taylor, taught her to cut beads and do inlay work. Dina began making jewelry on her own in 1996. Her work is featured in galleries throughout the southwest, and she is a regular participant at the Heard Museum Market and the Santa Fe Indian Market. Along with her respect for the horse, Dina is also known for her affection for the wolf. Through many of her designs, Dina honors her tribal teachings of the wolf‘s legendary hunting abilities and their human-like regard for the family (pack).
