Ishmael Soto Austin Texas Studio Pottery Abstract Sculptural vase  11" tall, very substatial piece. This and a few other pieces I'll be listing are from the estate of local listed artist Jeanette Welty Chelf who was a longtime friend of Soto's going back to his years at the University of Texas. This piece has no cracks, chips, or restorations but does have a firing flaw going down half of the side which does not penetrate the interior, the interior is glazed, it holds water. Below is an excerpt from the artists eulogy. This is a good vintage piece from a local Austin estate“Ishmael’s passing is a loss for us all in the community,” said Sylvia Orozco, director of Mexic-Arte Museum. “He was a great human being, teacher and artist. Ishmael was one of the first, if not the first Mexican-American Austinite to become a professional visual artist.Soto won many prizes and was exhibited frequently in group and solo shows.A native Austinite, Soto earned his first degree from the University of Texas and his second from the famed Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. His 57th Annual Potters Show and Sale took place in December 2016. Incredible complex labor intensive piece of over 100 year old hand<br>engraved art nouveau French cameo glass with no issues or damage whatsoever.St<br>Louis had been and still is one of the great old glass houses of France; they<br>had gone to the Paris exhibition in 1900 expecting to be crowned king of glass,<br>only to be completely out-classed by the cameo glass of the ‘upstart’ Emile<br>Galle. In the early 1920s they were still trying to get their own back. Paul<br>Nicolas cut a deal with St Louis –he would make cameo glass for them using their<br>facilities and then also he could use their facilities to make cameo glass for<br>himself too. This was before the days of ‘studio art glass’ if you had a glass<br>kiln you were a major sized business, not a one-man-band. The pieces Nicolas<br>made for St Louis were signed a number of ways, but quite soon they settled on<br>‘D’Argental’ (the brand name they had established for their own previous,<br>unsuccessful attempts at Cameo glass). Nicolas sneakily added a cross of<br>Lorraine to the mark to indicate when he personally made a piece. When he made<br>Cameo for himself pieces were signed ‘P. Nicolas’ usually followed by<br>‘Nancy’.Production at St Louis clearly had its limitations, the crystal glass<br>they used, had a more limited colour palate than he was used to at Galle and the<br>extra toughness of the crystal glass meant internal polishing was effectively<br>impossible. This is a magnificent glass vase on a metal base. Overall height is<br>approximately 10 3/8 ", the glass vase measures 9 1/2" and is up to 3 1/4" wide.<br>The diameter of the opening is 1 7/8". Pressed white milk glass with a beaded<br>top rim. Multiple embossed designs around the neck and base as well as embossed<br>scroll-like designs down the full length of the sides. Beautifully hand painted<br>on front and back with multiple small blue flowers with yellow centers and long<br>wispy brown stems and leaves. Reddish-brown accents and many white beads. The<br>metal base consists of a silver-colored ring and four attached gold-colored<br>feet. The ring appears to be made of brass with a silver colored paint, the feet<br>seem to consist of a white/grey metal with gold painting. Both ring and feet are<br>quite ornate. Manufactured by the C.F. Monroe Company in Meriden, CT and the<br>bottom of the vase is accordingly marked with the orange Wavecrest mark as used<br>around 1900. In excellent condition without any damage. No chips, no cracks, no<br>wear other than three enamel dots on the very top rim, no repairs.<br>B25

There are a few small<br>scratches on the exterior only visible upon close examination. These pretty much<br>always have some and it's rarely mentioned.<br><br><br>In 1886, a Chinese porcelain vase with "Peach Bloom" glaze sold at auction for<br>$18,000. The tremendous price and the phrase Peach Bloom were widely publicized.<br>Within months, American glass companies developed new formulas to capitalize on<br>the Peach Bloom name. This glassware is now collectively referred to as<br>"Peachblow".<br><br>One type of Peachblow, shading from yellow at the bottom to deep red at the top,<br>was made by the Hobbs, Brockunier and Company of Wheeling, West Virginia. It is<br>now called Wheeling Peachblow after the town where it was made. Wheeling<br>Peachblow is a two-layered glass or cased glass. True amber base color on these 10" tall x 6" wide, a true estate fresh pair that's been together for over 100 years with the same family that never sold anything. These both have very nice iridescence, better than average. 9-10 years ago a few of these brought over 2k each for one vase at Seeck Carnival glass auction. c1900 Harrach Gold/Platinum Enamel 12.25" vase with Storks/Butterflies. Nice size and shpe, better than the pics suggest. I'm 100% sure it is over 100 years old and top quality hand blown/hand painted vase, I believe it was made by Harrach in what is now Czechoslovakia. tw168
