Pizzichillo & Gordon Studio Art Glass Vase 7.25" tall x 6.5" wide.No cracks, chips, or restorations.Bruce Pizzichillo and Dari Gordon are internationally known artists who create large, colorful handblown glass vases, sculptural vessels and bowls as well as intriguing glass and mixed media sculptures. Using glassmaking techniques that are thousands of years old, along with many of their own invention, Bruce and Dari melt glass in furnaces that are designed for work in multiple colors. They achieve a palette of distinctive colors by mixing various metallic oxide formulations containing gold, silver, cobalt and others, into the molten glass. They heat the raw materials in large ceramic pots inside a glass furnace at temperatures in excess of 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. As the molten liquid glass achieves a working temperature, the artists gather the fluid substance onto the end of a five foot long steel pipe or rod. They blow, manipulate and shape the mass of molten glass, constantly spinning it and dipping it back into the pot for additional gathers if the piece is exceptionally large. For decoration, they apply shards, frit, bits and strings of colored glass that they have pre-made to the hot surface of the glass, and then reheat the piece to fuse the elements to the surface. When they complete the blowing and shaping process, they remove the piece from the pipe and place it into an annealing oven, where it will cool slowly over a specific period. In general, the larger and thicker the piece, the longer the time required for it to anneal. If not properly annealed, the piece will shatter when exposed to room temperature. Finally, the artists inspect each piece to determine if it meets their standards for first quality. They then proceed with the finishing work, which can include cutting, grinding and polishing before signing the completed piece. Depending on the size and complexity of the piece, the artists may reject half the pieces they make, or more, for lacking the requisites of first quality. Bruce studied at the University of New Mexico and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in glass from the California College of Arts & Crafts, where he studied with world-renowned glass artist Marvin Lipofsky. This piece is definately well over 100 years old I'm<br>certain and guaranteeing it to be. Mid Century Italian Murano Glass Ducks Sun colored amethyst 13.5" tall with no damage or wear. One red, one blue, a good old set. Definitely Murano, unsure of the company/artist. Estate fresh and they were in a window with tons of dust around where they were sitting. I'm 95% sure they were originally clear one with blue the other red highlights and they clear part turned purple from prolonged exposure to UV light from the sun. This happens when glass has Manganese in it. I realize this black background doesn't highlight the beautiful purple but I just didn't have time to change the background. Large Leon Applebaum Art glass sculptural vessel. This piece is really heavy, probably 10-15 pounds 9.5" X 8.5" X 5.5" Signed Leon Applebaum clearly I just couldn't photograph it. This piece can be displayed on several sides, I found one rough spot shown in the center of the second pic, I believe it could have easily left the studio like that as it isn't sharp and not in any way a distraction. No other chips, no cracks, no restorations. This piece retailed for several thousand dollars.Born in Toledo Ohio, in 1945, Leon Applebaum grew up in what would become the birthplace of American Studio glass. While an art student in Toledo, Leons’ dream of becoming a high school art teacher was shattered upon enrolling in his first hot glass class. Leon was instantly intrigued by the molten material, resulting in an addiction to working hot glass that would shape and define the rest of his life.Leon completely immersed himself into this newly discovered world of glass. He completed his BFA at the Massachusetts College of Art and then received his MA at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Although Leon experienced success exhibiting and selling his work as an undergraduate, he sought to further his education beyond what the available universities could offer. In 1973 Leon journeyed across the Atlantic to study the enduringtradition of Swedish glass forming at the Orrefor’s Glass School. There Leon began to explore the Swedish style of optically thick glass that would influence the future of his work. After a year of studying and working at Boda Glass in Sweden, Leon returned to the U.S. to pursue his MFA in glass fort he Rochester Institute of Technology.During this period, Leon was able to synthesize the Swedish glass techniques with his ideas of using the color spectrum and trapping air to create bubbles as a design element that continues to define his work. For the next 25 years Leon has been developing new ideas, techniques, and designs on hot glass.He has taught at RIT and Naples Mill Art School in Naples, NY, and conducted workshops throughout the country. Leon Applebaum’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D.C., the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York, and the Ajeto Glass Museum, in Novy Bor, Czech Republic, among many others. He shows in many galleries, both nationally and internationally.Leon currently resides with his family in Prattsburg, NY, at the Sahaj Glass Studio. In his textured series, Leon uses tools to manipulate the surface of hot glass creating an optically transformed piece. This very non-traditional approach to glass working allows for the exploitation of the transparent and reflective qualities of glass. In Leon’s contemporary sculpture series, he uses glassblowing as a means, not and end. Leon uses cooled blown pieces that are cut in elemental forms and assembles them using ultraviolet glue. This technical approach offers great freedom to explore and execute ideas that are not possible with hot glass. Leon’s sculptures use circular forms reflecting the cyclical nature of life. With eyes toward the future, Leon plans to focus his energy on sculptural glass.
