6.5" 1982 Bill Derrevere Southwestern sterling cuff bracelet

Bill Derrevere is a metalsmith, jeweler and Associate Professor of Art at Tulsa
Community College who works primarily in metal – pewter sculptural works as well
as silver jewelry. Of pewter, he states, “To work in pewter is to rediscover and
reshape traditional techniques for use in making artistic statements which are
contemporary and alive. This leads to the invention of new concepts and forms,
and to the use of unusual combinations of materials.” As for jewelry making, he
says, “I construct a large portion of my jewelry out of sheet or wire. I also
cast much jewelry using the lost wax method. I enjoy the manipulation of the
metal or the wax because this allows my personal attitude to project from the
jewelry. If the metal hasn’t gone beyond what it was when it was purchased from
the smelter, then it hasn’t received a new spirit. That spirit is what I hope my
abilities as a metalsmith allow my work to convey to anyone who sees it.”

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. • Amazing Napier Sterling Mid Century Modern period and style bracelet

Amazing Napier Sterling Mid Century Modern period and style bracelet

    1 in stock

Amazing Napier Sterling Mid Century Modern period and style bracelet. An amazingwork of wearable art from the 40's or 50's. This piece rivals and of the high end silver from the period in both quality and design, the only difference is it's much rarer than say a Pineda, Spratling, or Jensen bracelet of the period as they were produced in larger quantities from my experience. This is entirely handmade, each piece is hand hammered on the sides, screams quality from every direction. 8" long x 1" wide x 59.3 grams, fully functional springed clasp, no damage or significant wear. The Napier Company got its start in North Attleboro, Massachusetts 1878, under the name of The E. A. Bliss Co., manufacturing gilt men's watch chains. In 1882, the company became incorporated as The E. A. Bliss Company with the word "The" as part of its legal name. The company relocated to Meriden, Connecticut in 1890, after the company sustained rapid growth in the previous decade. During World War I (and again in World War II), they ceased production of jewelry, and instead focused on producing war-related items, such as medallions and medals. James H. Napier became president of the company in 1920, and the company was renamed, The Napier-Bliss Co. In 1922, the company again changed its name to The Napier Co.Timeline The company was known for its ability to be on the forefront of fashion and design and had a history of sending its designers to Europe. In 1925, James Napier attended the World's Fair Exposition Internationale des Artes Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, and brought back with him business ideas, including designs influenced by Parisian and European fashion. Mr. Napier himself, did not design jewelry. James Napier work for the company from 1914 to his death in 1960. From 1920 to 1960 he served as president. In 1999, the company was bought by Victoria & Company. The plant in Meriden, Connecticut was closed by Victoria & Company on October 15, 1999. However, under the umbrella of Jones Apparel Group, Napier jewelry is still being manufactured and distributed.Jewelry designs In the 1920s and 1930s, Napier designed necklaces, bracelets and earrings in a range of styles including, designs featuring Egyptian motifs, such as cobras, Victorian Revival designs and Deco-style motifs. The company produced very little jewelry during the 1930s, focusing on its giftware lines. In the 1940s, most of the jewelry produced was sterling silver tailored pieces. In the 1950s, it produced jewelry in a wide range of styles. Napier jewelry is notable for its simple, modern, geometric and floral designs. However, the company also produce boutique and high-end jewelry. Some of the metalwork bears resemblance to Mexican and Scandinavian designs. The fan jewelry collection was introduced as a 10-year fundraising commitment in 1955. In the 1950s, the Napier Company presented First Lady Mamie Eisenhower with a bracelet bearing an elephant design, which was reputedly one of her favorite pieces of jewelry, and which she wore often, and the Napier Company gifted the contestants of the 1955 Miss America Pageant with fashion jewelry.Historical silver designs Napier silver designs from the first half of the 20th century are in museum collections including the Brooklyn Museum, Newark Museum and a substantial collection at the Dallas Museum of Art. Over the years, Napier silver has been featured in museum exhibitions, including Modernism in American Silver: 20th Century Design at the Smithsonian in Washington, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Wolfsonian in Miami Beach, the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, TN (2005–07). Napier designs have also been included in two shows at the Brooklyn Museum, entitled 19th century Modern (2011–12; 2013–15). In November 2016-November 2017, the iconic Napier penguin cocktail shaker is the lead design of a Dallas Museum of Art exhibition Shaken, stirred, styled: The art of the cocktail.

7" Roderick Tenorio (1955-2013), Santo Domingo Pueblo, Sterling silver Bracelet

    1 in stock

Roderick Tenorio (1955-2013), Santo Domingo Pueblo, Sterling silver Bracelet inthe overlay style Fits up to a 7" wrist, this is the real deal, made by Roderick by hand....not the mass produced stuff he designed for others later. You really don't find the pieces like this that he made himself on the open market very often.Roderick Tenorio, Santo Domingo Pueblo, 1955-2013Roderick Tenorio expressed his appreciation for the fruitfulness of the earth in his “Gentle Rain” jewelry collection. Roderick’s trademark symbols, comprised of 14 karat gold and etched sterling silver represent the rain katcina, the sun, moon, and sacred corn. Roderick took home the Best of show award at the 2001 Eight Northern Indian Pueblo Arts and Crafts Fair for an outstanding gold concho belt, which won major awards at other shows throughout the southwest over the same year.Roderick Tenorio was an award winning Santo Domingo artist. A 1981 graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts, Roderick was accomplished in sculpture, painting and music. Roderick’s unique symbolic interpretation and high degree of detail earned him jewelry awards at Santa Fe Indian Market, Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Show, the New Mexico State Fair, and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonials, including the prestigious “Best of Show”.Roderick loved creating jewelry. “I’m a very lucky man,” he had said quietly. “I was born with a certain amount of talent in art, and I had family, friends and teachers who encouraged me to develop my abilities. Today, I have the advantage of incorporating many centuries of tribal history, , myths and characters into my designs. I’m far less interested in defining my jewelry as traditional or contemporary than I am in striving for beauty…and I’m willing to let my work follow any direction needed to realize that end.”Roderick was born at home between April 28th and May 1st, 1955. The actual date is unwritten and may have been concealed by his parents to avoid having to “feed the people” of the village had he been born on May 1st the day when the pueblo celebrates San Felipe, it’s Patron Saint. He was raised by his Grandparents near the plaza in Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico.Roderick did not finish Bernalillo High but went instead to Albuquerque Indian School. He remembered writing three poems for the AIS yearbook and having one of them published. A teacher in the Band Room asked him what he wanted to play and he was given a clarinet. After a year of clarinet Roderick started singing. He even performed with a traveling ensemble as a singer.Enlisting in the Army after high school, Roderick was stationed in Lewitsburg, Germany for 2 1/2 years working Field communications. Friends wanted Roderick to leave the service and stay in Germany as a singer in their band. Roderick chose to return to Santo Domingo. For Roderick, Santo Domingo was not the same. He had grown 12 inches while in the service and became a threat on his return. He felt alienated and that he no longer fit. He began drinking and wound up staring at a sculpture in Santa Fe. A security officer from the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) asked him if he was looking for the registrar. The guard escorted him to the office of the school where he found his aunt working. She helped him complete the paperwork to become a student using his G. I. Bill. Roderick was one of the older students. He bought alcohol for the others students and “everybody loved him.”Roderick’s two years of study at IAIA were a turning point in his life. He began to really focus on his art work. He graduated with a degree in three Dimensional art. He liked sculpting stone or wood and sold his sculpture at the Museum shop.Roderick started making jewelry when he was very young and by the age of 13 he was making “superfine” heishi of turtle shell, turquoise, and pin shell. His grandmother had a grinder and polisher that ran from the slow steady power of an old refrigerator motor. Roderick sold his heishi to nearby gallery owners in Santa Fe. He recalled doing very well in Gallup with heishi made with distinctive stone combinations. He sold everything and came home with $1,500. In High School Roderick drove a new pick up truck supported by his heishi sales. With awards he won in competition, Roderick purchased a prefabricated steel trailer, and moved his bench into a 10 x 10 studio.Reticulation describes a sequential process of heating silver to a dark, dull red color with a torch sufficient to cause oxidation of the copper on the surface. The silver is then quenched in a hot pickle solution, soaked to remove the oxidation, and rinsed with water. The procedure is repeated three to five times diminishing in effectiveness yet increasing the depth of the fine silver surface. The deeper the pure silver, the more pronounced the effect. The surface layer, crinkles as it cools and at a different rate than the layer beneath, the process creates texture that catches your eye and makes you want to reach out and touch the surface. Silver reticulation ads contrast, texture, and depth. It produces a beautifully patterned surface, ideal for a wide range of jewelry designs.Roderick combined noble metals, semiprecious gemstones in a fashion and style all his own. Tribal Expressions proudly boasts of being one of the few to represent the sublime and the substantial creations of Roderick Tenorio, from Santo Domingo Pueblo.Roderick passed away in 2013, we miss his soft spoken voice and the way he explained the inspirations behind his beautiful, cool jewelry. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. 1970's Native American Nickel Silver turquoise cuff bracelet

1970's Native American Nickel Silver turquoise cuff bracelet. Beautiful piece of natural turquoise on this cuff. I'm always astonished when I see a piece like this, of course at first I thought it was silver because it does look like silver. But now I believe it to be a nickel over brass or some other non silver or low content silver alloy. There was a time in the mid 70's-80's when silver was more expensive than it is now (and it's fairly high now) That's really the only thing that can explain a piece like this. Great looking well made cuff.

    1 in stock

7 1/8" Navajo Richard Begay Heavy stamped sterling silver bracelet. Very wellmade, thick and heavy bracelet with no issues.Richard Begay was a Navajo Silversmith from Pinon Arizona. Richard passed away June 1, 2013 and we pay tribute to this remarkable individual. His work is displayed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC and the Heard Museum in Phoenix AZ.He was known for both contemporary and traditional jewelry, as well as his innovative inlay designs. His work is represented in many collections and museums both nationally and internationally.Richard was born and raised in Navajoland, Arizona. Throughout his art classes in school, he always wanted to create the perfect shape. He soon realized that he wanted to create beautiful jewelry. He had been a silversmith since 1974.He borrowed jewelry tools from his father-in-law and set to work, learning the demanding craft of silversmithing.Richard was immediately drawn to the intricate inlay work for which he is known. As he perfected his craft, Richard explored different techniques of inlaying, always searching for the best way, the most beautiful setting, the perfect harmony of material and craft. He also developed an eye for choosing the best stones for his inlay. Turquoise and coral are his favorite, but Richard used a wide variety of stones and shells, including malachite, spiny oyster, and pacific coral. Not limited to the usual in anything he does, he also inlays opals, sugilite, lapis and other exotic stones into his award-winning pieces. The importance of harmony in his work is echoed in his silverwork. He incorporates important symbols from his culture. Corn was a significant gift to the People by the Creator--it represents life to the Navajo. The Yei-Be-Chai is the personal link between the Navajo s and mortal man. The Bear, one of the four animals given to the first people, embodies power and wisdom. It was provided for protection and guidance, and to ward off evil. Richard also uses the Steppe Design found in the wedding baskets and recreates special times, such as the social dances he went to. Encircling it all is his extraordinary inlay, adding color and life. The beautiful things Richard looks for exist in his creations. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content.
