San angelo tx hollands sterling gold overlay spur tie bar Boy Scout Jamboree
San angelo tx hollands sterling gold overlay spur tie bar Boy Scout Jamboree, 14k gold horse overlaid on Sterling spur. No issues. Production of Holland’s western jewelry began in 1936 with the introduction of the “spur clip” tie clip. Chase Holland had established a jewelry business in San Angelo, Texas in 1918. After the depression, he wanted a gift to express his appreciation to his friends who had helped him make it through the difficult years. A miniature silver spur was fashioned as a tie clip. This spur was given as a token of appreciation to friends who had “won their spurs” in the western tradition. Some of the first spur clips produced were given by Mr. Houston Harte, founder of Harte Hanks Communications, Inc. to President Franklin Roosevelt, Vice President John Nance Garner and Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn. The “spur clip” was then patented and the creative craftsmen of Holland’s workshop developed a unique line of western spur jewelry that is still produced today. The success of the spur jewelry led to the creation of the famous Holland’s buckles and other western accessories. From 1936 to 1940 numerous styles of buckle sets and trophy buckles were designed. Many of the legendary Texas Rangers wore these buckle sets as well as the spur tie clips. This is why today the buckles are often called “Ranger” sets. Chase Holland employed tool and die makers as well as hand engravers to produce the steel die sets necessary to make the buckles and spur jewelry. All of the Holland’s buckles are die struck in Sterling Silver or solid 14 or 18 karat gold. Die struck metals are more dense and heavier than pieces that are casted. Production costs are higher for die struck buckles, but they are stronger and harder. This also allows the hand engraving to create a very bright cut in the dense metal. Over the years, Holland’s buckles and spurs have been worn by many well known ranchers, wildcatters, politicians and celebrities. Holland’s buckles have become cherished family keepsakes that are treasured as much as Grandfather’s gold watch.

San Antonio Texas San Jose Mission Pottery Tile
San Jose Mission Pottery Tile. 6.25" square. No cracks, chips, or restorations. No issues, really nice example.San Jose Mission Potteries refers to a group of tile and pottery workshops founded by Ethel Wilson Harris in the San Antonio, Texas area starting in the 1930s. tw119HistoryEthel Harris was a great enthusiast of traditional Mexican art, and the three potteries – Mexican Arts & Crafts, San Jose Potteries, and Mission Crafts – provided an outlet for Mexican artisans to produce native-inspired ceramic designs. Her first pottery company: Mexican Arts & Crafts (MAC), launched in 1931. The pottery opened in the granary of the Mission San José. A small shop attached to the pottery sold wares promoting Mexican-influenced design to area tourists.Harris hired a principal designer, Fernando Ramos, while he was still a high school student. Ramos was responsible for the collective potteries’ well-known scenes of Mexican life, local culture and dancers. He left in 1934 to take up dancing full-time and studied Spanish, Mexican and Gypsy dance in Mexico. Along the way, he met and married another dancer, Carla Montel. The pair became a popular dance team in the 1940s, appearing in nightclubs and movies. Flamenco dance themes are common in MAC pottery. In the late 1930s, Harris copyrighted Ramos’s designs, and continued to use them for many years after his departure, in all three incarnations of her pottery workshops. Her workshops gained additional exposure through participation at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. By 1934, Harris’s success led to expansion with San Jose Pottery, started up as a production facility for the smaller MAC workshop, which couldn’t support the kilns needed for tile manufacture. San Jose Pottery also manufactured a line of dinner-, art and tileware known as “Pan American Ware.” These pieces featured Colonial, Western, Indian and Mexican scenes.Harris left San Jose Pottery in 1937 following a disagreement with the president and partial owner of the company, Cecil Beck. As part of the split, she retained rights to all of the designs produced by the company. The Calla Lily dinnerware line that San Jose Pottery is known for was produced after Harris left the company. Beck sold the company to a New York firm in 1941. The pottery burnt to the ground in 1944. Unable to resume operations, the company went out of business and the building was razed in 1947.Concurrently with her work at San Jose Pottery, the workshop began producing tile murals and wrought iron tile tables for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition. MAC/San Jose Potteries also produced wares for the 1939 New York World's Fair.Harris continued her work with MAC. In 1939, Harris joined the Arts and Crafts Division of the Work Projects Administration (WPA) as a technical supervisor. During this period, she brought 60 WPA artisans into the workshop. Items produced during that period include tilework for public spaces, dinnerware for needy families and other public works. She left the WPA in 1941 to manage the San Jose Mission State park, and moved into living quarters in the mission. The third iteration of her workshop, Mission Crafts, was launched in 1941. This larger workshop featured both more space and a bigger kiln. They collaborated with local iron artisans and produced tilework in wrought-iron frames and tables. Harris eventually retired in 1963, when her son took over the business. Mission Crafts closed in 1977 due to increased production costs.

Signed Book The Sculpture and Drawing of Charles Umlauf (1911-1994)
Signed Book The Sculpture and Drawing of Charles Umlauf (1911-1994). Estate fresh from a prominent Austin Texas Estate, guaranteed Authentic Signature I'm 100% positive. A little wear to dust jacket as shown, no issues with interior of book, lots of great photographs. Umlauf didn't hold book signings to the best of my knowledge, it's very rare to find a book signed by him. Charles Umlauf (July 17, 1911 – November 19, 1994) was an American sculptor and teacher who was born in South Haven, Michigan. His sculptures can be found in churches, numerous public institutions, outdoor locations, and museums, including the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, as well as in many private collections. Umlauf received a number of accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Ford Foundation Grant. In 1941 Umlauf accepted a position at the University of Texas School of Art in Austin, Texas, where he taught for 40 years. Artists teaching at UT included Loren Mozley, Everett Spruce, Kelly Fearing, Seymour Fogel, and William Lester. Umlauf retired as Professor Emeritus in 1981. In 1985, he and his wife Angeline Allen Umlauf gave their Austin home, Umlauf’s studio, and 168 sculptures to the City of Austin. Based on this gift and considerable community support, the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden and Museum was founded and opened its doors in 1991 as at 605 Azie Morton Road in Austin, Texas. The UMLAUF is a private–public partnership with the City of Austin. Contents 1 Early life 2 Work 3 Mentorship 4 Selected works 5 References 6 External links Early life Charles Umlauf was born in South Haven, Michigan, on a large farm where his family lived and worked. He was the sixth of eight children born to immigrant parents Christian Heinrich (Bavarian) and Charlotte Derouet (French-Alsatian). The Umlauf children were named Heinrich, Marie, Charlotte, Wilhelm, Edouard, Karl, Emelia, and Louis. The family moved frequently in search of work. The Umlauf family suffered from anti-German sentiment during the first World War. The family Americanized their names (Heinrich to Henry, Wilhelm to William, Karl to Charles) to avoid persecution in their Michigan town and schools. After enactment of the Espionage Act of 1917, Umlauf’s father was falsely accused of spying while working at an ammunition plant. Soon after, the windows were shattered in the family home. This treatment would influence the subjects and expression in Charles’ work. In 1918 the entire family relocated to Chicago in search of greater opportunities for work. Umlauf discovered sculpture early in his life, when he was a child, playing in the sand at Lake Michigan. He watched a sand artist on the beach, and subsequently sculpted a life-size sand sculpture of his own. Umlauf claimed that he knew at the age of ten that he was going to be a sculptor. At this age, he was living with his family in Chicago. In 1922, Christian Umlauf died, further impoverishing the family. Charlotte Umlauf died only 6 years later, leaving the children orphans and emotionally devastated. Charlotte had been a fervent supporter of artistic education for her children, spending a portion of their meager income on music lessons for Charles and his siblings. Work In 1918, when Charles was eight years old, the Umlauf family moved to Chicago. Charles and his brothers worked as caddies at Oak Park and Bryn Mawr Country Clubs. Charles was encouraged to pursue his artistic interests by his sister, Marie, who paid for her 11-year-old brother to attend weekend classes at the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC). He soon earned a scholarship for continued study. Umlauf was interested in carving and forming figures from an early age. Based on a small lion he molded in clay, Charles received his first commission of a full-sized lion in 1922, at age eleven. In 1929 Umlauf began three years of study with Albin Polasek at the AIC. He subsequently spent one year as an assistant to Lorado Taft at his Midway Studio before returning to the AIC where he remained until 1937. Those years saw a growth in Umlauf's interest in the more abstract sculptures being produced in Europe, and as a consequence, his own art became increasingly abstracted. From 1934 through 1941, Umlauf was employed by the WPA Federal Art Project, created during the Great Depression. He sculpted for several Federal projects, including two monumental sculptural heads for Merchandise Mart and sculptures for Cook County Hospital. His 1939 work War Mother caught the attention of Marion Koogler McNay and professors at the newly formed Art Department at the University of Texas at Austin. They offered him a position as Professor of Life Drawing and Sculpture and the Umlaufs permanently moved to Austin in 1943. Mentorship During his tenure at the University of Texas, Charles Umlauf taught many art students, including Farrah Fawcett. Fawcett, an art major, called Umlauf her "favorite professor" and they began a close mentoring relationship. Fawcett took classes and worked with Umlauf in his studio, as well as occasionally sitting for him as a muse. Her sculpture work is similar to Umlauf's in style. Work by Fawcett was exhibited at the UMLAUF in 2017 in the Mentoring a Muse exhibition.[1] Another of his pupils was Bob "Daddy-O" Wade, who studied at the University of Texas from 1961-65, and later became famous for his larger-than-life sized works inspired by Texan cowboy culture.

Signed Zuni sterling micro-inlay bear pendant
Signed Zuni sterling micro-inlay bear pendant. Signed illegibly as shown, weight and measurements in pics. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.
