All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn‘t an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I‘ve seen thousands of pieces xrf‘d to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women‘s wrist.

6" Danny Romero Yaqui Sugilite, sterling, shell modernist cuff bracelet

    Out of stock

6" Danny Romero Yaqui Sugilite, sterling, shell modernist cuff bracelet. Well made, sturdy bracelet with no damage or significant wear. Danny only used the highest grade materials, this is some of the most beautiful deep purple Sugilite I have seen., fantastic design. “I construct each piece with sheet and wire first. My inspiration for design comes from many sources. The purple hues and angular shapes of the desert and mountains, a Frank Lloyd Wright building, petroglyphs, Mibres pottery, or the pyramids of Mexico are all examples of what may influence my art, says Danny Romero. Danny, who initially set out to become a medical doctor, began experimenting with jewelry design as a hobby. He quickly discovered he had a natural talent and decided to pursue jewelry making as a career. He never regretted his choice. Danny, who was Yaqui, acknowledged that many of his sterling silver cast pieces were inspired by prehistoric petroglyph carvings and Hispanic religious symbols. Danny was also a recognized master of intricate inlay design. Working in both silver, 14k and 18k gold, he would often include up to 1,500 individually cut pieces of precious and semi-precious stones in his one-of-a-kind pieces. Painter John Nieto launched Danny in a new direction when he asked him to create an inlay version of one of his portraits. Danny explored the idea of portraiture in jewelry, using his artwork and the work of others for inspiration. “I like E.S. Curtis photographs, he says, referring to the turn of the century photographer and the ethnographer who documented more than 80 native American tribes. “I go through magazines then I start drawing and go from there. From those sources, Danny produced detailed portraits in stones. “Lapis will be the darker colors, and yellow or red will be where the light is hitting. Pipestone out of Minnesota, which is a pottery kind of color, can be the shading, and pinks are the highlights. I enjoy bringing the colors of the earth to light." Sadly, Danny Romero passed away on August 18, 2018 at the age of 64, after a long battle with Alzheimer‘s. Danny worked with our gallery for many years and with multiple generations of the Garland family. He was an incredible artist and an even better human being. His personality and creative talents will be greatly missed.

Super clean with no detectable damage or wear inside or out. I don't believe it has ever been worn. Hallmarked by artist twice in interior, hallmarked 14k 3 times in interior. A very well respected artisan, at the time of listing this is arguably the best piece of his being offered for sale online. Comparable silver bracelets by this artisan retail for around 3-4k. This would probably retail for 25k+ with current gold and material prices directly from the Artisan or at a gallery. This bracelet it composed of 14k gold, Gem Silica, Natural Australian Opal, Carnelian, Chalcedony, and Lapis Lazuli. Duane is of Hopi and Laguna heritage and is a master craftsman. He creates exquisite jewels by hand, using fine materials.

Duane Makitma was studying education at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, when a dean suggested he switch his major to art. “ I thought it would be a hobby.” Growing up in tiny towns in Arizona under the tutelage of his Hopi and Laguna relatives, Maktima learned how to carve and paint, but these artworks were referred to as “blessings” and not art. The Dean, having seen Duane’s work was insistent. When Maktima first laid eyes on the jewelry in the jewelry lab, he says, “It was like my whole life flashed before my eyes, I was hooked.”

It took a decade for Maktima to complete his degree. He left college to work as a resident artist at the nearby Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. At only 19 years old he was given a studio and stipend to make jewelry which was snapped up by visitors from around the world. Eventually he embarked on a personal retreat from the pressure and spent 3 years at Laguna Pueblo. Maktima worked there as a survey helper and everyday he walked the country from Second Mesa to Black Mesa. During these long walks he came to deeply appreciate his heritage and decided to complete his education.

When he did return to university, it was an exciting time for Native American artists. His research into African and Indian art led him create spiritual based pieces from beads, shell work mosaics, motifs from Hopi pottery, hollow silver tubes, gold , lapis, turquoise , and red coral. In 1982, Maktima, received a second-ever fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts. He moved to Sante Fe a year later.

An active community leader, he has influenced many young people to pursue a career in art. His brooches, buckles, and other exquisite jewelry have been featured in some of the best Native American galleries. In 1990, Northern Arizona University honored the artist with its 2000 Distinguished Alumni Artist Award, Distinguished Achievement Award, and member of the President’s Circle. Maktima credits his achievements to his education and his family. “I can hear grandpa saying, ‘You have really learned something. You’ve really excelled with what God gave you.’ ”

According to his grandfather, the name “Maktima” means “searching for eagles.”

6" Gary Reeves Navajo High Grade Orange Coral sterling silver cuff bracelet. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Good condition, circa last quarter of the 20th century. This type of coral is extremely difficult to acquire these days, this bracelet is likely 30-40 years old, at the time this material was more plentiful like everything else. Navajo silversmith Gary Reeves was born in 1962 in Gallup, N.M. and died July 2014. He began silver work in 1974. He was the older brother of renowned silversmith Sunshine Reeves and the younger brother of David Reeves (now deceased), who was so instrumental in teaching the craft to both Gary and Sunshine, as well as their half-brothers Darrel and Andy Cadman. While each artist has his own individual style, they all share an affinity for complex engraved and hand stamped geometric designs and they are all a part of recreating and popularizing the old Navajo designs of the early 20th century. They call their style Navajo Revival Style. He filled his old style silver with lots of stamp patterns and used high quality pieces of turquoise. Gary smithed silver from the age of twelve. His work, like that of his brother Sunshine, is present in the collections of the Heard Museum in Phoenix and Gary has won numerous awards for his work.

  • 6" Gibson Nez Jicarilla Apache and Navajo, Multi-stone inlay cuff bracelet - Estate Fresh Austin

6" Gibson Nez Jicarilla Apache and Navajo, Multi-stone inlay cuff bracelet

    Out of stock

Gibson Nez (1947-2007) Jicarilla Apache and Navajo, Multi-stone inlay cuff bracelet. 6 1/16" including the 1 1/16" gap. No damage, very clean with hardly any wear whatsoever. Tapers from 9/16" to 7/8" 89.4 grams. Gibson Nez, Jicarilla Apache and Navajo, is known throughout the Indian arts industry and by collectors worldwide as the master of stampwork. No other craftsman comes close to the expert precision of his sharp, clean, impossibly close stamps. Parallel lines, a hairs-breadth apart, encircle bolos and bracelets like radiant energy, drawing your eye to the extraordinary, gem-grade stone Gibson hand-picks to feature in the center. Stampwork of Gibson’s caliber requires extreme patience and an eye for balance. “What is important to me is to make one nice piece, not a lot of mediocre pieces,” said Gibson. Gibson’s pieces have won ribbons and awards at all the major competitions, including Gallup Ceremonial, Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum, the All Mankind Jewelry Competition in Washington, D.C., and Casa Grande in Arizona. Asked what makes him most proud in his work, Gibson said, “I simply try to make a piece that highlights the stone.” Gibson’s work embodies unrelenting attention to detail. Each hand-struck stamp adds and builds on the last. Single, meticulously placed lines are, together, the power to Gibson’s work - a complete harmony of silver and stone. Gibson sadly passed away on December 1, 2007, but his work will be cherished for years to come. Long after those who knew him are gone he will still be remembered through his powerful jewelry.

Jay Livingston is part Navajo and part Zuni, and he feels that both of his cultures influence his work."I am an artist and my name is Jay Jacob Livingston, a third generation silversmith. I've been the understudy of master silversmith Jake Livingston from such a young age, nine years old to be exact, all the while finding and incorporating my own techniques and designs. I currently reside in Sanders, Arizona. However, my true roots arise from Pine Springs, Arizona which is located on the Navajo reservation. If I am not working on jewelry I am in Pine Springs tending the family ranch.I am Navajo and part Zuni. Both of my cultures influence my work, however as of late my motivation is derived from my beliefs in the Native American Church. I've also been trained in metal fabrication receiving certifications with high honors from Tulsa Welding School and San Juan Community College. This type of training has allowed me to create my own style of metal fabrication including heavy stamp work. My beliefs play an important role in my life and it's depicted in my work. I continue to blend my ideas with my techniques to innovate within my medium however one day I plan to expand my boundaries.I have won several ribbons for First Place titles in prestige art shows around the country including the Santa Fe Indian Market, Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market, Southwest Indian Art Fair and the Navajo Nation Fair. Every form of art I create is truly one of a kind and is a part of me. I believe the Creator blessed me with this gift not only to show the beauty of my culture but share the blessing from the Creator to all his children. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed,

    1 in stock

6" Jimmie King Jr Navajo sterling multi-stone inlay cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics. No issues. For over a quarter of a century, Navajo silver and goldsmith Jimmie King, Jr. excited the imagination of jewelry lovers. His unique heavy metal work style and delicate inlay earned him a reputation as a master jeweler. His work is a combination of strength and delicacy. The most common reaction when people first pick up a piece of his work is to comment on the weight of the jewelry. It feels substantial. It is inlaid with precision and color awareness, marking it as King‘s alone. King was particular about his work, refusing to hurry a piece and willing to melt it down if unsatisfied with the result. Every piece is hand-built and finished. He lived and worked just off the northern edge of the Navajo reservation near Farmington, New Mexico. His interests included reading, learning new things, and listening to opera as he created his jewelry. King created the inlay cube, the solid link bracelet with an inlaid clasp, and the "Sky High" bracelet. He has won top awards at the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial and featured in several books and magazines about Native American art. His jewelry is signed in cursive "JR" for his name‘s first and last initials. Six dots in a semi-circle above the letters stand for the six sacred directions: North, East, South, West, the Sky, and the Earth. Years ago, in a ceremony, a medicine man told him that if he put these dots on his jewelry, everything would go well for Jimmie - it appears he was right. Almost all bracelets that don‘t have inlay work should be adjustable by at least .25", please refer to pictures for the gap size to see if it would work if slightly adjusted as the gap would change. Les was born in 1935 and when he was older joined the Navy. He told me once that he lied about his age to get into the Navy and became one of the youngest Navy pilots ever. After the Korean War he headed back to New Mexico and became interested in American Indian jewelry. His wife at the time (ex-wife now) wanted a Navajo squash blossom necklace but Les couldn’t afford it. He was always resourceful and since Les didn’t have the money to purchase the squash blossom he figured he would try making one himself. It turned out so nice that when Les’ wife was at a party with Edith Maisel, the “Queen of Indian Jewelry” was so impressed that she offered Les a job. Maisel helped popularize “Indian Jewelry” and though it wasn’t actually handmade, Maisels’ offered many Native Americans a job and increased the awareness of this art form. This was Les’ big break and he later also learned from the great Native American artist Carl Louthy. Eventually Les opened his own shop and was at the right time and the right place when the great “Indian Jewelry” boom in the 1970’s hit. Everybody wanted this turquoise Indian jewelry, from celebrities to the common man and woman. Les teamed up for a while with Bing Crosby (not the singer but the Indian Trader) and at one time had around 50 Native Americans working for him. Les developed his signature look, the swirling free flowing scroll work with leaves and flowers which he used throughout his life. He was one of the first to incorporate gold and diamonds into “Indian Jewelry”. Even though he had his own signature “look”, he was an expert at many different styles and techniques.

Circa third quarter of the 20th century. Amazing bracelet in clean condition with no issues other than possibly one stone missing close to the gap on one side. Impossible to know for sure. Monongye, Preston (1927-1987) Biography Preston Monongye was a leader in the “The New Indian Jewelry” movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in 1927, in Los Angeles he was abandoned at Hopi at age seven and adopted by a prominent Hopi family. Monongye attended reservation schools and became a full participant in Hopi religious and social life. At age nine, Monongye began apprenticeship with his uncle, the master silversmith and painter Gene Pooyama. Following his service as a paratrooper in World War II, Monongye became a Kachina painter, working occasionally for trader Roman Hubbell and the Fred Harvey Company. Monongye re-enlisted during the Korean War and later worked in law enforcement for the Bureau of Indian Affairs while continuing to paint and make silver jewelry. After leaving his job in favor of jewelry making in the early 1960s, Monongye quickly became recognized as an innovative designer and technician, immersing himself in “the new Indian art,” using traditional techniques and motifs to create a contemporary new look. He was best known for cast silver set with stones that often were cut by his friend Lee Yazzie, and later by his son Jesse. Monongye taught his art at various schools and workshops and lectured widely on contemporary Native design. He won many awards at shows and competitions and his jewelry appears in museum collections such as the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff and the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe.

Expected wear, circa third quarter of the 20th century, no damage or unsightly wear. Artists hallmark shown. Richard is perhaps best known for his distinctive textured silver designs. His trademark technique of granulation was discovered by accident when he noticed silver filings were fusing onto a ring he was soldering. He calls the process which produces this granulated surface texture “reticulation, and he has been perfecting the technique throughout his career. Born in 1956, Richard has been a jeweler since the mid 1970s. He learned jewelry making from his brother Boyd and from Kenneth Begay at Navajo Community College in Arizona. He quickly progressed from basic tasks of cutting and polishing stones to the more complex process of inlay. Richards contemporary silver and hold work features the use of fabrication, overlay, and granulation. He is also known for colorful inlay work with a variety of natural stones and for his fine degree of control and attention to detail. His designs are motivated by images of the natural world, particularly the Wide Ruins area of the reservation where he spent a large part of his youth. Richard says of his work, “I am inspired by the colors of the mountains at sunset, the patterns of shadow and light that emerge at dawn, and the pinpoints of starlight against the black night sky. His pieces typically contain the symbol for lighting and an arrow pattern. The lightning stands for natural causes, while the arrowhead symbolizes man-made elements. Richard says the design represents the ups and downs of life. “Some things we cant do anything about and you should try to enjoy life to the fullest.

6" RJ Scott Navajo sterling silver tufa cast modernist style cuff bracelet. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Navajo artist, Raynard J. Taa’itsohii Scott, was born on September 3, 1965 in Los Angeles, California. He is of the kin Yaa’aanii (Towering House People) Clan, and born for the Dzil tl’ahnii (Mountain Recess People) Clan. He is the eldest of four boys and two girls. Although raised primarily in urban areas, it was important for Ray and his siblings to be taught traditional Dine (Navajo) values and beliefs. “One of the most important [beliefs] is that of reciprocity. In this sense I take great care and have the utmost respect for my creations, or my ‘children,’ as they also take care of my family and me. I talk to my ‘children’ and pray as I work with them. Each of these creations has a part of myself in it, and as a result of breathing life into each one, it has a character and soul all its own,” said Ray. Ray’s parents initiated his jewelry-making training at the early age of seven. Ray also acknowledges artists Raymond Yazzie, Boyd Tsosie, and Charles Supplee as prominent figures and inspiration in his life as he learned the ways of jewelry making. “It is difficult to label a ‘style’ of work that I do. I can only describe it as contemporary, layered sculptures. I like building up layers of contrasting textures and designs. The more intricate design or the further from the norm I get, the more enthusiastic I am about working. I also enjoy researching and reading about ancient arts and civilizations. Among my favorites are those of Ancient Egypt, Greek, and classical periods, such as the Renaissance and Victorian eras.” Ray’s pieces have won many awards at several shows, including the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum Guild Fair, Red Earth, Eight Northern Pueblos Show, and the Gallup Ceremonial. His work is also included in museums and private collections both nationally and internationally. “It is my wish that each of my creations find a good home: that the person who acquires it will appreciate and have as much happiness wearing it as I did creating it.”
