Born on the Acoma Reservation, Wolf Robe was the son of Chief Day Break (Edward Proctor Hunt), Chief of the Delight Makers -- a man instrumental in the improvement of relations between the Acomas and whites. His mother, Morning Star, whose own father was Governor of Acoma seven times, was a potter and weaver. Wolf Robe learned silver-smithing from his older brother on the reservation. Wolf Robe achieved recovnition and fame for his jewelry and art work, winning the prestigious Philbrook Art Center's Grand Award in 1967. In addition, he was a businessman, with his own arts and crafts store in Tulsa, a lecturer, international traveller, author, and translator for the Bureau of American Ethnology. He assited L. A. White in his extensive studies of the Acoma Indians and made recordings for the National Anthropological Archives. Wolf Robe was particularly interested in the preservation of tribal customs, language and culture, and devoted his own time to this and the encouragement of others in similar efforts. Of his work at BAE he said, "My work there as an interpreter is the highlight of my efforts in trying to preseve all of the rich and wholesome lore of my people."* Not only was the preservation of the 'old ways' important to Wolf Robe, but also the representation and dissemination of his culture to whites, in an effort to promote their understanding and appreciation. He travelled all over Europe and to Australia for the Departments of Agriculture and Commerce, representing the American Indian to an appreciative audience.Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. 6 1/8" Les Baker Sterling and botryoidal turquoise chunk row cuff bracelet

    1 in stock

6 1/8" Les Baker Sterling and turquoise chunk row cuff bracelet. Les Baker was a well-known southwest jewelry artist who designed and also made jewelry himself. Although he was Anglo he employed many Native American silversmiths throughout the years, most notably Fritson Toledo, the great Navajo artist. Les had a great deal to do with the success of the Stagecoach. We have sold more Les Baker jewelry throughout the years than any other jewelry artist. But beyond that, Les was a great mentor and friend to Susan and Gary, here at the Stagecoach. Back in the late 1970’s Gary called Les about selling his jewelry. Gary and his father, Jim, met Les in Denver and have sold his jewelry ever since. In the early 1980’s, Gary spent a week in Albuquerque while one of Les’ Navajo silversmiths taught Gary the craft. This was one of the turning points at the Stagecoach. We could now size our own sterling silver and gold rings and eventually make our own jewelry right here at the Stagecoach. This was and is a huge advantage in selling jewelry as our knowledge of the craft went up exponentially. And for all this, Les asked nothing in return. Les was born in 1935 and when he was older joined the Navy. He told me once that he lied about his age to get into the Navy and became one of the youngest Navy pilots ever. After the Korean War he headed back to New Mexico and became interested in American Indian jewelry. His wife at the time (ex-wife now) wanted a Navajo squash blossom necklace but Les couldn’t afford it. He was always resourceful and since Les didn’t have the money to purchase the squash blossom he figured he would try making one himself. It turned out so nice that when Les’ wife was at a party with Edith Maisel, the “Queen of Indian Jewelry” was so impressed that she offered Les a job. Maisel helped popularize “Indian Jewelry” and though it wasn’t actually handmade, Maisels’ offered many Native Americans a job and increased the awareness of this art form. This was Les’ big break and he later also learned from the great Native American artist Carl Louthy. Eventually Les opened his own shop and was at the right time and the right place when the great “Indian Jewelry” boom in the 1970’s hit. Everybody wanted this turquoise Indian jewelry, from celebrities to the common man and woman. Les teamed up for a while with Bing Crosby (not the singer but the Indian Trader) and at one time had around 50 Native Americans working for him. Les developed his signature look, the swirling free flowing scroll work with leaves and flowers which he used throughout his life. He was one of the first to incorporate gold and diamonds into “Indian Jewelry”. Even though he had his own signature “look”, he was an expert at many different styles and techniques. He was always our go-to-guy for custom work. It was from Les Baker that I learned to pay attention to the quality of the work. Les paid great attention to the little details of the work, used heavy ring shanks when many others tried to cheap out and always used wonderful turquoise stones. Whenever I needed a turquoise stone that a customer wanted I was sure that Les could find it for me, even the rare ones. Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. 6 1/8" Luis Mojica 14k/sterling and fossil inlaid cuff braceletLUIS MOJICA The artist has lived all his life in the Rio Grande valley of southern Colorado and New Mexico in the region once known as the frontier territory of the Spanish Empire in the new world and later as a state of the Republic of Mexico. The region became part of the United States in 1848. the term mestizo or “mixed blood” describing the heritage of inter-marriage between Europeans and the native peoples of the Americas is correctly applied to the artist, and is where his artistic identity began and continues. The cultural roots that underlie the artwork of Luis Mojica may not be obvious to the casual observer. Throughout his extended career as as an artist, designer, jeweler, ceramist, and painter, he has striven to transcend the limitations of provincialism and conservatism that characterize his traditional Hispanic upbringing in order to create work that is current and expressive of a larger world view. Yet, values such as respect for tradition, persistence in the face of adversity, and a belief in the importance of life long education and spiritual growth have formed the foundation of his artistic efforts as well.Over the years of his career, Mojica has become recognized as one of the most innovative and proficient jewelry artists in the Southwest. His work is distinguished by the highest standards of craftsmanship, unusual combinations of materials, and a clear sense of functional design. His inspirations include the landscape, colors and cultural icons of the American southwest which are subsequently abstracted into his jewelry designs and finished pieces. His intent to offer jewelry that is well designed and executed, which has the distinct and unique qualities that can only come from the hands of a seasoned practitioner.Mojica’s work in precious metals has been seen in museum exhibitions and collections of the Heard Museum, Phoenix, AZ, the Museum of International Folk Art, and the Museum of Spanish Colonial art in Santa Fe, NM, the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, Albuquerque, NM and the Millicent Rogers Museum, Taos, NM. For over twelve years the artist was a participant in the annual Traditional Spanish Market held each July on the Plaza in Santa Fe, where his role as award winning exhibitor expanded to include lecturer, teacher and mentor of aspiring youth artist. He retired from Spanish Market in 2011.The artist currently maintains a home and studio in Albuquerque, NM.All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. Tsinnie learned jewelry making from his Hopi brother-in-law in the 1970s and has since won many awards, including a Lifetime Achievement award from the Indian Arts and Crafts Association. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn‘t an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I‘ve seen thousands of pieces xrf‘d to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women‘s wrist.

6 1/8" Retired James Avery Engravable bangle bracelet in sterling .James Avery founded his company in 1954, initially crafting jewelry in a two-car garage in Kerrville, Texas, with just $250 and a desire to create lasting value for others. Mr. Avery believed that meaning is what makes life more beautiful and this concept continues to drive how we design jewelry to this day. In 2007, 53 years after he first founded the company, James Avery officially stepped down as CEO and passed the reins on to his sons, Chris and Paul.Mr. Avery’s mission was simple: to create jewelry with meaning—both for himself and others. With a focus on creating straightforward designs and a core belief of integrity in all things, his jewelry became more than precious metals and gemstones. Guests came to him with their stories—their special moments—so he could craft them into pieces they would wear with pride for a lifetime. From writing letters to greeting Customers, Mr. Avery prioritized developing lasting relationships with each person who connected with his designs.anderas
