Antique English Cameo glass cup and saucer with butterfly/Chinoisiere decoration. Late 19th to very early 20th century, unmarked. Saucer is 4 7/8" wide, cup 3.25" wide. No damage or restorations.Cameo glass is a luxury form of glass art produced by cameo glass engraving or etching and carving through fused layers of differently colored glass to produce designs, usually with white opaque glass figures and motifs on a dark-colored background. The technique is first seen in ancient Roman art of about 30 BC, where it was an alternative to the more luxurious engraved gem vessels in cameo style that used naturally layered semi-precious gemstones such as onyx and agate. Really nice early 1800's to 1860's compote set. I believe the Brown leaves on the rim are transfer printed, but am positive the flowers in the centers are hand painted. Every piece has slight variations some even have different colored roses in the same spots. The plates were made on a potters wheel. The Compote and plates are 9" wide x 2.5" tall, no cracks, chips, or restorations on any of the 5 pieces there is minor gold wear on the compote, very minor utensil marks here and there on all pieces, extremely light stains on the front and back of one plate. This is a really clean set and very early.

Both guaranteed 19th century.<br>I have found that this style of jar, called Sustenteur, was popular in France in<br>the late 18th century, and were created as a piece of medical equipment to help<br>heal stomach problems. They work as pressure cookers and they were used to<br>prepare either meat or vegetable broths, which were cooked in a hermetically<br>sealed pot for hours in a water bath, thus providing a germ-free broth for<br>people with delicate stomachs. There are three holes at the base of the pot.<br>When oxygen would escape form the boiling water, it made bubbles, and the holes<br>allowed the bubbles to escape, so the pot would not tip over. The handle at the<br>top of the pewter cap allowed the pot to be easily removed from the water bath<br>and carried. Upon completion of his studies there, he became the<br>Art Director of The American Baby Magazine in New York, Assistant Art Director<br>at Lewin, Williams & Saylor in New Jersey, and then Art Director of Kenyon-Baker<br>Advertising & Baker Printing Company, (both of which were under one roof) in New<br>Jersey. By the Shape of the porcelain vase I think it may have<br>always been a lamp but have no way of knowing for sure. I did once see a very<br>similar shape in an oil lamp bring close to $2000 at auction, so maybe it was<br>once an oil lamp. I can't find a mark but the quality is unmistakably Limoges<br>French porcelain from the late 19th to early 20th century. Measures 19.5" to top<br>of socket where bulb goes, 27" to the top of the loop (not shown) where the<br>shade will rest, and 14" to the bottom of the brass stem that goes up for the<br>socket.

The badge on front appears to have been possibly added later but looks really old. Missing Chin straps and side ornaments. Antique Japanese Black-Lacquer Suzuribako (Writing Box) and Cover, late Meiji or early Taisho Period. Amazing item in original box. Some wear to lacquer but overall clean in good condition. Outer box measures 8.75" x 6". Suzuri-bako (硯箱; "inkstone box") are a type of Japanese writing box. The boxes are traditionally made of lacquered wood and are used to hold writing implements. Historically, the boxes were associated with calligraphy, and as such they were made using high-quality materials designed to safeguard porcelain inkstones (suzuri) from damage. History The first suzuri-bako were developed in 9th-century Japan. At the time, calligraphy was an integral part of Japanese society. In order for a writer to produce a high-quality calligraphy script, a set of precise tools was needed. The most important of these tools was the inkstone, which was required to hold and transfer ink onto a writer's brush. Ink sticks, water droppers, and a small knife were also part of a calligrapher's set. Suzuri-bako were designed to ensure that the various tools a calligrapher needed were properly organized and protected. Due to the insoluble nature of resin-based lacquer, the contents of the writing box were relatively safe from moisture.[3] Inside of the square or rectangular boxes rested a number of different trays and holders, the layout of which differed from period to period.[2] Early boxes were large enough to accommodate both the writer's implements and papers, while later boxes only housed tools. Fujii's family is known as early as 17th century and for four generations has enjoyed renown as the producer of inlaid work of first rank. Early in life, Yoshitoyo trained himself in this art, which led him to perceive the fact that there was ample room for further improvements and developments. Long experience and careful study gave him the skill and knowledge by which he could perfect the art, but Kyoto in those days was quite conservative, so that it was practically impossible for him to carry into practice the results of his investigation. He left home and came to Tokyo, the centre of learning, where he devoted himself to the art for a number of years, and finally succeeded in introducing valuable improvements. In 1902, at the age of 35, Fujii obtained his first patent from the Imperial Government. In 1909 he was granted his second patent. His damascene work, being made mostly from designs drawn by Prof. Bisei Unno of the Tokyo Fine Art School, well met the taste and requirements of the time.

Selling the exact 9 plates shown<br>in near mint to mint condition with no cracks, chips, wear, restorations,<br>utensil marks, wear to gilding, or other issues. I have looked them over very<br>well. They are all hand painted with extreme precision in different bouquets,<br>notice the bottom of the bouquet hits the same spot between the latticework on<br>each plate.
