1890's American Art pottery Kensington Tile 6"
1890's American Art pottery Kensington Tile 6" square, small chip on reverse side, no other significant issues. Kensington Art Tile Newport, Kentucky 1885 - 1895 Tile Heritage Collection Gift of Bob Smyth In 1881 the Hatt brothers, Arthur and Otto, established a tile works at Elm and Lowell Streets in Newport, Kentucky. Their company, Hatt & Hatt, was taken over by a group of investors in 1885 and renamed the Kensington Art Tile Company. During its short tenure as a manufacturer of dust-pressed art tiles, the combination of portraits and floral interpretations was most impressive due to the artistic talents of Herman Mueller and Mary Louise McLaughlin, among others. From an 1891 published report in “Illustrated Cincinnati” (courtesy of the Tile Heritage Library): “The main building is a substantial brick structure, three stories and basement in height and 40 by 200 feet in dimensions. The equipment for art tile-making purposes is of the most elaborate, complete and modern description, and includes four large kilns, which bake to the extent of 14,000 feet of tile at one filling. “The processes of preparation of the crude clay are as elaborate as they are complicated. The clay is first puddled and forced through great sieves by steam power. It is then dried and ground to a fine powder, and then moulded and pressed into the tile shapes, which are carefully baked, then removed and coated with the enamel and glazing liquids. They are then finally placed in the kilns and thoroughly glazed, when they are finally removed to the sorting and packing room, and forthwith shipped to destination. “The most extreme care is taken to have all the materials pure and accurately prepared, and the result is a perfection of quality, an elaborateness of finish, and a beauty and delicacy of colors and tints, nowhere else attempted, much less duplicated. An average force of 100 hands is employed, and ten teams are kept constantly busy.”

18th Century Rudolstadt Volkstedt Napoleonic Horse figure
18th Century Rudolstadt Volkstedt Napoleonic Horse figure. I guarantee this figure to be 200+ years old. If it is actually a depiction of Napoleon's horse then it would be early 19th century, but I believe it be from the last decade of the 18th century. 5 7/8" tall x 6.5" long, with a very old professional restoration that is now flaking off on the mid to upper body of the horse. Volkstedt Porcelain - History In September 1760, Georg Heinrich Macheleid (1723-1801) made a request to Prince Johann Friedrich, Fürst von Schwartzburg-Rudolstadt to establish a porcelain factory in Sitzendorf, Thuringia, Germany. Macheleid previously worked at a glass factory in Glücksthal. Independent of the ceramicists at Meissen, Macheleid conducted his own research into creating a hard paste porcelain.Prince Johann Friedrich granted Macheleid’s request in 1762 with the stipulation that the plant be located near his court in Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Macheleid established the Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanfabrik (Oldest Volkstedt Porcelain Factory) in Volstedt which became part of Rudolstadt in 1923. Macheleid created a self-sustaining village for his workers. In 1767, Macheleid left. The factory came under the control of the prince, his wife, his son, and five other investors. They leased the factory to Christian Nome from Erfurt. During the latter half of the eighteenth century, Volksted gained a reputation for its well modeled and painted figurines, rivaling those of Meissen. In 1793, Prince Johann Friedrich purchased all outstanding shares. In 1797, Prince Ludwig Friedrich, Johann’s successor, sold the factory to his brother-in-law Ernest Constantine, Landgrave of Hesse-Philippstahl, who sold it to Wilhelm Greiner and Carl Holzapfel several years later. Nome left around 1800.isshelf

18th Century Sceaux French faience box
18th Century Sceaux French faience snuff box. Good hinge, metal mounts reglued, no restoration or major damage to Faience pieces, small glaze flakes on bottom corners and one small glaze flake on front right edge. 5.25" x 4" x 2.25"Sceaux ware, tin-glazed earthenware and porcelain made at a factory in Sceaux, Fr., from 1748 to 1794. Both were skillfully painted in a large range of enamel colours with landscape and figure subjects and with minutely exact flowers and birds. Cupids in pink outline derived from the paintings of François Boucher were typical of the period of Louis XV. Pieces decorated with naturalistic flowers, fruit, and the like in relief may have been modeled by Richard Glot, who purchased the factory in 1772.Faience, or tin-glazed and enameled earthenware, first emerged in France during the sixteenth century, reaching widespread usage among elite patrons during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prior to the establishment of soft-paste porcelain factories. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe. While faience can be created from a wide mixture of clays, it is foremost distinguished by the milky opaque white color achieved by the addition of tin oxide to the glaze. French faience is typically divided into two types. Grand feu (high fire) describes pieces that have been decorated with glaze and metallic oxides before being fired a single time at a high temperature of around 1650°F (900°C). Petit feu (low-fire) faience, developed in the second half of the eighteenth century, refers to a process whereby the clay body is fired before being glazed and decorated with metallic oxides and then fired again at a lower temperature; pieces can also go through a third firing. Grand feu pieces have a more limited color palette that consists of blue, yellow, brown-purple, and green. By contrast, the lower firing temperature of petit feu faience enabled both greater precision in painting techniques and variety in the range of colors.tw108

18th/19th Century American Door Knocker from Norfolk Virginia L Monogram
18th/19th Century American Door Knocker from Norfolk Virginia. This is from the
Norfolk Virginia home of Civil war Colonel William Lamb (7 September 1835 – 23
March 1909), an American newspaper editor, politician, businessman, and soldier,
noted his role as a Fort Fisher at the mouth of the Cape Fear River during the
Civil War. It was passed on via inheritance to the family I'm representing. I'm
not sure of the address of the house or when it was built, but it's at least
from the first half of the 19th century. It has the L monogram as shown, I'm
100% sure it came from his home. 6.25" tall x 4" wide with a lamb head at the
base. I believe it's bronze but it could be brass with the original unpolished
patina.tw215Lamb, Williamby Joseph Edmund Deaton, 199127 Sept. 1835–23 Mar.
1909Engraved portrait of William Lamb, from James T. From
the collections of the Government & Heritage Library, State Library of North
Carolina.William Lamb, publisher, Confederate soldier, and politician, was born
in Norfolk, Va., the son of William Wilson and Margaret Kerr Lamb. He attended
the Norfolk Academy, the Rappahannock Military Academy, and the college
preparatory Jones School in Bridgeport, Conn., before entering William and Mary
College at Williamsburg, Va., in 1852.At age twenty he was graduated with a
bachelor of law degree. As he was too young to practice law, his father
purchased for him a half ownership of the newspaper, Southern Argus, in Norfolk.
While part owner and coeditor of the newspaper, Lamb participated in national as
well as local politics. In 1856 he was a delegate to the Democratic National
Convention. In 1857 he was instrumental in ensuring the election of a Norfolk
city council that would institute a system of public education based on New
England models. Finally, in 1860 he was a presidential elector for the
Breckinridge Democrats. When Abraham Lincoln defeated John Breckinridge, Lamb
felt that the Union could not be preserved. In 1861 the Southern Argus was forced
to close due to loss of staff to the Confederate army. On 18 April Lamb himself
was appointed captain of Company C of the Sixth Virginia Regiment. This force
had formerly been known as the Wood's Rifles, a militia company that Lamb had
commanded at Harpers Ferry at the time of the John Brown raid in 1859. On 24
Sept. 1861, he was appointed major and quartermaster for the Wilmington District
in North Carolina under Brigadier General Joseph R. Anderson. Lamb served as
commander of Fort St. Philip, a minor defense work in the Wilmington area. In
1862 the Thirty-sixth North Carolina Regiment was formed and Lamb was elected
its colonel. This regiment, also known as the Second North Carolina Artillery
Regiment, was to form the garrison for Fort Fisher, at the mouth of the Cape
Fear River, which protected the vital port of Wilmington. Lamb was appointed
commander of the fort on 4 July 1862 and remained in that post for two and a
half years. Under his direction, the fort's defenses were expanded and it became
the largest earthwork fortification on the continent. Colonel Lamb was severely
wounded and captured when it fell to Union forces on 15 Jan. 1865 after a heroic
defense. Because of his courageous stand against the enemy, he often was
referred to in later life as "the hero of Fort Fisher." The wounds he received
during the final assault would leave him on crutches for seven years. He was
confined to Fort Monroe, Va., and released on 1 May 1865.Lamb returned to
Norfolk and managed the shipping of coal for the Norfolk and Western Railroad,
helping to make Norfolk the major coaling station on the Atlantic coast. He
designed and used the first bill of lading to aid in shipping coal from cities
in the American interior through Norfolk to Europe.Politically he was again
active as a Democrat, serving as a delegate to the Democratic National
Convention in 1876. But in 1879 he joined the Readjusters (those who advocated
readjusting the state's prewar debts without ruining taxpayers); this plus his
high-tariff and other views held by the Republicans caused him to switch parties
in 1882. He served three terms as mayor of Norfolk (1880–86) and turned down a
fourth. His father and grandfather also had been mayors of Norfolk. Lamb served
as Republican state chairman (1895–97) and was a delegate to the Republican
National Convention in 1896. He became a consul for Germany and Sweden at
Norfolk, and for his services King Oscar of Sweden conferred on him the Royal
Order of Vasa.Committed to the field of education, Lamb helped to establish
public education in Norfolk. After the war he advocated education for blacks. He
served on the board of visitors of the University of Virginia, was a rector of
the College of William and Mary, and was the first president of the Norfolk
Public Library.
