c1890 Thomas Webb Burmese cabinet vase

    1 in stock

c1890 Thomas Webb Burmese cabinet vase. 3.5" tall with no damage or detectable wear, clean on all sides. Burmese glass is a type of opaque colored art glass, shading from yellow to pink. It is found in either the rare original "shiny" finish or the more common "satin" finish. It is used for table glass and small, ornamental vases and dressing table articles. It was made in 1885 by the Mount Washington Glass Company of New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA. Burmese glass found favor with Queen Victoria. From 1886, the British company of Thomas Webb & Sons was licensed to produce the glass. Their version, known as Queen's Burmeseware, which was used for tableware and decorative glass, often with painted decoration. Burmese was also made after 1970 by the Fenton art glass company. Burmese is a uranium glass. The formula to produce Burmese Glass contains uranium oxide with tincture of gold added. The uranium oxide produced the inherent soft yellow color of Burmese glass. Because of the added gold, the characteristic pink blush of color of Burmese was fashioned by re-heating the object in the furnace. The length of time in the furnace will determine the intensity of the color. Strangely, if the object is subjected to the heat again, it will return to the original yellow color isshelf

    1 in stock

c1890 Thomas Webb English Cameo Glass Bowl. 5 3/8" wide x 1" deep, amazing quality. I couldn't find a mark but the color and quality is spot on. Cameo glass is a luxury form of glass art produced by cameo glass engraving or etching and carving through fused layers of differently colored glass to produce designs, usually with white opaque glass figures and motifs on a dark-colored background. The technique is first seen in ancient Roman art of about 30 BC, where it was an alternative to the more luxurious engraved gem vessels in cameo style that used naturally layered semi-precious gemstones such as onyx and agate. Glass allowed consistent and predictable colored layers, even for round objects.TW193

c1890 William B Kerr American Sterling Call card Case/Wallet

    1 in stock

c1890 William B Kerr American Sterling Call card Case/Wallet. Rare and unusual in fantastic condition with minor scratches below center hand etched design which could either be an organization or initials I'm not sure but it's fancy and wonderful. Weighs 128.3 grams, it's thick and heavy. Faint Hatchet hallmark shown, I believe it's William B Kerr as they used similar designs. 4 7/8" tall x 3 3/8" wide. I've not seen this exact design before but my guess is the leather wore out on most of them, this one is particularly well preserved and could be used for credit cards and money. WM.B. KERR & CO - Newark, NJ Began as Kerr & Thiery in 1855. Kerr's hallmark was a fasces - a single-bit axe with rods bound with straps. They used this trademark of Ancient Rome origin from 1855 until 1892. Other hallmarks include a hammer, and three "X" marks. Purchased by Gorham Corporation in 1906 tw156

c1900 American Tramp Art box 13" x 7.5" x 5.5", some wear as shown, metal feet
bent but it sits level. Cool and functional.

Tramp art
Tramp art is a style of woodworking which emerged in America the latter half of
the nineteenth century. Some of tramp art's defining characteristics include
chip or notch carving, the reclaimation of cheap or available wood such as that
from cigar boxes and shipping crates, the use of simple tools such as penknives,
and the layering of materials into geometric shapes through glue or nails. One
technique used in tramp art is Crown of Thorns joinery.

History
Although widespread use of wooden cigar boxes in the 1850s sparked involvement
in tramp art, it was most prevalent during the Great Depression. Tramp art was
made around the world but it prospered in the United States. Examples can be
found in every state. The most common forms were the box and the frame and
although there were no rules or patterns to lend commonality in the artists’
work there were objects made in every conceivable shape and size including full
sized furniture and objects of whimsy.

Tramp art was a democratic art form made wherever the raw materials used in its
construction were found. It appealed to men who might have made an important
body of work such as ‘Sunflower’ artist John Martin Zubersky (active c. 1912 –
1920) or the wonderfully expressive wall pockets by John Zadzora (active circa
1910) but also to men who might have made one piece in their lifetime. It was
easy to make and appealed to anyone who had a desire to take a pocketknife to
wood.

There were countless men, some women, and even children who historically
constructed tramp art.

Origins of the Term
A 1959 article by Frances Lichten in Pennsylvania Folklife used the term "tramp
work" to describe crafts constructed from waste materials such as discarded
cigar boxes and assembled with a penknife. Contemporary scholars and art dealers
such as Clifford A. Wallach have noted that while this art form may have been
practiced among America's itinerant population, it was by no means unique to
them and was practiced by factory workers, farmers, and laborers in other
occupations.

In 1975 Helaine Fendelman published the first book on tramp art, Tramp Art an
Itinerant's Folk Art. The book acted as a catalog to the first museum show on
the art form sponsored by the American Museum of Folk Art.
b30

  • c1900 Antique Star Mark Buermann Hercules Bronze California Spurs Pair - Estate Fresh Austin

c1900 Antique Star Mark Buermann Hercules Bronze California Spurs Pair

    1 in stock

c1900 Antique Star Mark Buermann Hercules Bronze California Spurs Pair. These are made of 'Hercules Bronze" special alloy invented by August Buermann. These spurs date pre-1914 with the Buermann Star hallmark, dating them before they were bought out by North & Judd in 1914. 5" long x 3" inner width at heel. As found with no damage Buermann Spurs are one of the most famous and sought after designs from one of the most famous makers in Cowboy Spur history. He can be considered to be a good businessman too, as he fulfilled the need of creating many different types of spurs and also aggressively patenting his brands/logos and designs. What ever type or style was needed, Buermann was the first to step up and create them. History. August Buermann was born in Germany in 1842 but later traveled to the US after taking his apprenticeship in lock smithing. After joining the army as a substitute at the age of 22 he began making spurs for the civilian and military. Buermann fashioned the now infamous StarBrand that adorn his designs and creations. The company had grown to have over 100 employees before the turn of the century. By the early 1900s, the majority of military men were wearing Augusts heel spurs and army officers were also entitled to wear heel chains and were all privately purchased from Buermann. August also had a son, August Jr, who succeeded him in running the company when he retired in 1896. August Jr was also a good businessman like his father but, in 1914 the Buermann name and design was purchased by North and Judd, a large established hardware company. The infamous StarBrand of the Buermann boot spur was no more and was replaced by the North and Judd anchor mark. August Jr then retired. The Buermann name is not without some (slight) controversy too though. Once the other well known manufacturers started to gain in-roads on the established business, selling new styles of spurs that were popular, Buermann was accused of making straight copies of these designs. Even to the point where he was accused of taking copies of the images from other companies catalogs for his own use. At that time, the company was seen to be becoming more and more removed from it's customer, branching out and modernizing at a fast rate. Other companies such as McChesney or Crockett were closer to their customers and Buermann was playing catch-up. Materials. Like many other spur makers, the majority of these spurs are made from solid brass or iron. However, Buermann also invented 2 types of metal for use too, known as "Star Steel Silver" and "Hercules Bronze". Where these metals were used, the metal name was also stamped onto each piece. In fact, so good were the products that were being made in his modern factory in Jelliff Avenue, that he was able to win some awards of excellence. The Centenial Commission of Philadelphia bestowed several awards for different products in several categories and the Star Brand also won awards at the St Louis Fair in 1904. tw154
