Born in 1949, Oscar Alexius is a well-known Navajo silversmith who has been producing silverwork since the mid-70‘s, well over 40 years In his book, American Indian Jewelry I; 1,200 Artist Biographies, Greg Schaaf wrote of Oscar, "He is best known for helping to revive traditional, old-style jewelry." His stamp work is especially beautiful. He formerly worked for Chet Jones at Zuni and later Don Tanner at Shush Yaz in Gallup. Jewelry specialist Jay Evetts once commented “He does nice, heavy work with deep stamping. He also has worked with Tommy Jackson. He formerly hallmarked his pieces "O.A." and now hallmarks with his full name in script. Not only was Shatka Bear-Step a silversmith but he was also passionate about the Appaloosa horse breed. The Appaloosa Horse Club (an international breed registry), inducted Chief Shatka Bear-Step into their hall of fame in 1988, and on their website they describe him in this way: "An Appaloosa showman and promoter, Shatka Bear-Step added colorful and romantic aspects to the breed. Shatka was the father of Mr. Dick Spencer (Western Horseman Magazine) and a well-known silver and turquoise artist. He was featured on national television depicting the Lord‘s Prayer in Indian Sign Language. He produced several awards for the Appaloosa Horse Club, including the Shatka Bear-Step award given to the overall high point youth at each National Show." His love for the Appaloosa breed is apparent in the book he wrote and illustrated, "Painted Ponies" It was originally published in 1952.

Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Harry Morgan began casting jewelry at age seven. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style. The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM. He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him. Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004. Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. Harry Morgan won awards at every major Indian art show, and had an exhibit of his creations at the Heard Museum in 2007, a year before he passed way.

Despite the formality presented by his use of gold in Marcs jewelry, the durability of his pieces is apparent; upon wearing, one immediately knows this is something that can take the abuse of a daily wear. And yet, they are surprisingly lightweight. One well-versed in Native American jewelry might notice that the traditional Navajo stamp style seen in Marcs jewelry is liken to a fellow Native American artists work: Emerson Bill. This is no coincidence, as both artists learned the ways of their trade together. This occurred in their salad days, and they grew to be close friends. Marcs work can be distinguished from Emersons by his addition of extra embellishments and flourishes in his stamp work. Ramona Loloma Poleyma (Hopi) made jewels from 1977 to 1984, she also excels at making rugs. Ramona was born on June 27, 1934 and lives in Hotevilla, Third Mesa Arizona. Ramona, sister of Charles Loloma, were aunt and uncle of Verma Nequatewa and Sherian Honhongva. Apprenticing with Loloma (Nequatewa from 1966, Honhongva from 1976), the sisters worked with him until his retirement in the late 80s. Their sense of continuity with and difference from him was reflected in the name they chose to share when they began to exhibit together in 1989: Sonwai is the feminine form of the Hopi word for “beauty (the masculine being “loloma). Around 1993 the sisters began to work independently. Nequatewa continued with the Sonwai name, while Honhongva used her own name.

Horace Iule (1901-1978), pronounced Ai-ú-le was a third-generation silversmith. His grandfather, a man known as Sneezing Man, was identified by John Adair in his book The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths as one of the first silversmiths at Zuni Pueblo. Horace Iule also taught jewelry making at Zuni Day School, teaching and influencing a whole generation of Zuni smiths. Horace taught his son Wilbur Iule who carries on the tradition.

In 2006, he became a fellow of the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, and added to his honors "Best of Classification" awards from both the Heard Museum and the Santa Fe Indian Market for his 18k yellow and white gold perfume-vial ring, Nizoniful. Mindful of his role in encouraging the next generation of Native American artisans, Fritz has returned as an instructor to the Poeh Arts Center in Pojoaque, NM, where he was once a student. His time as a teacher has helped to strengthen his own skills as a jewelry-maker and inspires him and his students to experiment with progressive designs. An amiable spirit, Fritz explains that his fashion-forward, sculptural jewelry designs are a combination of forethought and serendipitous discovery, resulting in jewelry that excites both his students and collectors. Examples of his awe-inspiring jewelry can be seen in Dexter Cirillo‘s book, Southwestern Indian Jewelry. Fritz is originally from Twin Lakes, NM in the Eastern part of the Navajo reservation in New Mexico. He shares his home with his wife and son. The subtle balance of his environment - the purity and texture of architecture, landscape, insects and animals, and the sea - and the fun of family-life and teaching, mix together in a creative experience that doesn‘t feel like a job.
