c1750's Battersea snuff box. 3 5/8" wide x 1.6" tall. Some overall crazing and very minor overpainting at bottom rim inside and out. This and a few more Battersea pieces I'm listing have tags indicating they were last purchased at Sotheby's Parke-Bernet in the 1970's.Having already opened an office in New York, in 1964 Sotheby’s bought Parke-Bernet, America’s largest fine art auction house.Battersea boxes developed in the mid 18th century as tiny decorative containers covered with enamel or porcelain and decorated with pleasing designs. Originally the boxes were made of copper covered with white enamel, decorated with classical or religious scenes or portraits. They evolved over time to become more sentimental. The Battersea box got its name from a firm under the tutelage of Sir Stephen Theodore Janssen, Once Lord Mayor of London at York House in Battersea. The boxes were decorated by transfer printing, which took an impression from an engraved plate painted with enamel and printed on to the box which was then hand painted and fired. The firm existed only from 1753 to 1756 however other firms producing similar boxes, especially those in the village of Bilston, took up this technique. Battersea became the collective name for all such boxes. With advancements in the pottery industry due to the Industrial Revolution, Battersea boxes gradually fell from favour. Allowing small boxes to be produced at less cost than the enameled competitors made Battersea boxes decline significantly by the mid 19th century. They became popular again in the second half of the 20th century with the development of commemorative boxes produced for such well known firms as Tiffany & Co.

Antique Meyer Texas Stoneware Jug 2 qt. Excuse me for calling this cute, but it is. Great size. I'm guessing at the 2qt, maybe 1 qt, definitely not a gallon, don't have time to check. 8.5" tall x 6" wide with handle, a few very small nicks on top rim. No large chips, no cracks, no restorations.Meyer Pottery Co. 1887 - 1964 Franz Schultz founded this company in 1887 with his son in law William Meyer at the Atascosa Community in Bexar County just Southwest of San Antonio. Schultz, an 1885 immigrant from Germany, was reared in a pottery-making family, and, upon his arrival in Texas, he found work in the pottery shop of William Saenger. Shortly thereafter he was joined by William Meyer, who had arrived in Texas on the same ship with Schultz. Meyer not only went to work for Saenger, but married Schultz's daughter Mary. Soon Meyer's sister Maria arrived with her potter husband Ernst Richter, who would go on to establish the Star Pottery Co. in Elmendorf. When Schultz and Meyer got word of a good clay outcropping at Atascosa to the west, they set up their own company to produce all types of utilitarian stoneware. The Meyer Pottery was one of very few Texas companies of the period who continued to rely primarily on a native clay source for their slip glaze. Rejecting the newly available commercial Bristol and Albany slips, the Meyer Co. chose, either for aesthetic or financial reasons, to dig their own slip clay from the banks of nearby Leon Creek. It is primarily this slip, unique in Texas pottery, that makes the Meyer work so recognizable. Also their shoulder-to-shoulder ring handle attachment is rare on Texas pottery. The Leon slip fires to a wide range of colors from dark brown to light mustard. Most have a greenish tint. Upon William Meyer's death in 1920, his two sons, Frank Meyer (b. 1888) and Gustav (Gus) Meyer (b. 1896) took over the family business. They continued to manufacture utilitarian vessels well into the 1940s. I know of no piece of normal production utilitarian ware with a "Meyer" mark. There is a handful of "specialty" items with marks, including advertising pieces and a type of cistern float. But it is the striking, mustard to brown to olive green "Leon Slip" glaze that is the best known Meyer signature, and this is a beautiful example of that classic look.

He<br>was orphaned at a very young age and brought up by his sisters. In order to make<br>a day-to-day living he started selling his drawings, and later, paintings. This<br>brought him to the attention of a wealthy sponsor, who enabled him to attend a<br>private art school, which in turn helped to develop his style and technique.<br><br>Molokeng is an unusual and dynamic personality who enjoys and excels in all<br>forms of creativity. He composes and performs his own songs, enjoying enormous<br>popularity under the stage name of “Billy Africa”.<br> <br><br>Style and Format<br><br>Versatility, dynamism and inventiveness have kept Billy Molokeng’s work fresh<br>and ever changing, ensuring that both he and his art do not become stereotyped.<br>This is demonstrated by the fact that his work was initially typically<br>“township” in character, but developed into his own more unique style in later<br>years.<br><br>His early paintings portray scenes taken directly from life in the townships.<br>The compositions of these early works are dense and on a single plane, usually<br>with several figures depicted in a bold and heavy manner. His individuality and<br>originality, however, is still strongly evident. His figures are lively and<br>filled with movement, containing a subtle humour, underlying joy and<br>light-heartedness which so many art lovers relate to, and enjoy.<br><br>During the 1970s and 1980s, this South African artist’s work became more<br>sophisticated, both technically and conceptually, representing a more mature<br>artist at work. Molokeng’s work started to move away from direct township<br>depictions towards a fusion of the urban experience with African motifs and<br>culture.<br><br>Compositionally, his African art became lighter and began to incorporate more of<br>the figurative and abstract than the literal. Many of his paintings began to<br>display a more sketchy landscape background, containing forms such as huts,<br>missionary churches, ox wagons, oxen and human figures in tribal and rural dress<br>partaking in traditional customs.<br><br>Towards the end of the 1970’s, a calligraphic element within his work began to<br>emerge. This, together with the Bushman-like figures that started to populate<br>his township art, gave his work a potent African flavour that still exists to<br>this day, and makes Billy Molokeng’s work so appealing to South Africans and<br>foreigners alike.<br><br>In the 1980’s Molokeng’s work witnessed further developments, resulting in a<br>more refined technique and style. Township life, once again, became important<br>subject matter, although it was rendered in a more personal manner and blended<br>with the African landscape. The landscape element of this newer work is more<br>solid and is rendered as an integral part of the more abstract compositions and<br>forms. Influenced by life and politics within the townships during the most<br>volatile period of South African history, Molokeng’s work began to demonstrate<br>strength and a sensitivity that were to remain an intrinsic part of his work.<br> <br><br>Exhibitions<br><br>Molokeng had his first exhibition at Dorkey House, Eloff Street, Johannesburg.<br>In 1974 he participated in several group exhibitions – at the Canadian Embassy,<br>Gallery 101, Lidchi Art Gallery and at the Herbert Evans Art Gallery,<br>Johannesburg. In 1976, he participated in the Second International Art Fair in<br>Tel Aviv, Israel. This was followed by a one-man show in Germany in 1979. The<br>next year (1980), he took part in group shows in Athens and in Rome and<br>subsequently had a one-man show at the Lidchi Art Gallery in Johannesburg. In<br>1981, Billy Molokeng was awarded one of the three prizes for painting at the<br>Republic Art Festival.<br><br>Molokeng has also been featured in a group exhibition at the World Bank offices<br>in Washington, U.S.A. along with other artists chosen from Cameroon, Ghana, Mali<br>and Nigeria.<br><br>Currently, Billy Molokeng presents a strong sense of “Africa” within his<br>paintings. Their potency and appeal lie in his bold use of colour, his strong<br>compositions and his unique use of his medium. The acrylic and oils are used as<br>an overlay, which is often scratched away to create different textures and<br>layers, as well as expose various underlying colours. His use of black<br>strengthens and enhances the burnt sienna, ocher, gold, greens and blues as well<br>as emphasizing his trademark white and black eyes of his figures.<br><br>Billy Molokeng’s South African artworks are appreciated by thousands and are<br>part of many private and public collections both in South Africa and abroad.

San Jose Mission Pottery Tile. 6.25" square. No cracks, chips, or restorations. No issues, really nice example.San Jose Mission Potteries refers to a group of tile and pottery workshops founded by Ethel Wilson Harris in the San Antonio, Texas area starting in the 1930s. tw119HistoryEthel Harris was a great enthusiast of traditional Mexican art, and the three potteries – Mexican Arts & Crafts, San Jose Potteries, and Mission Crafts – provided an outlet for Mexican artisans to produce native-inspired ceramic designs. Her first pottery company: Mexican Arts & Crafts (MAC), launched in 1931. The pottery opened in the granary of the Mission San José. A small shop attached to the pottery sold wares promoting Mexican-influenced design to area tourists.Harris hired a principal designer, Fernando Ramos, while he was still a high school student. Ramos was responsible for the collective potteries’ well-known scenes of Mexican life, local culture and dancers. He left in 1934 to take up dancing full-time and studied Spanish, Mexican and Gypsy dance in Mexico. Along the way, he met and married another dancer, Carla Montel. The pair became a popular dance team in the 1940s, appearing in nightclubs and movies. Flamenco dance themes are common in MAC pottery. In the late 1930s, Harris copyrighted Ramos’s designs, and continued to use them for many years after his departure, in all three incarnations of her pottery workshops. Her workshops gained additional exposure through participation at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. By 1934, Harris’s success led to expansion with San Jose Pottery, started up as a production facility for the smaller MAC workshop, which couldn’t support the kilns needed for tile manufacture. San Jose Pottery also manufactured a line of dinner-, art and tileware known as “Pan American Ware.” These pieces featured Colonial, Western, Indian and Mexican scenes.Harris left San Jose Pottery in 1937 following a disagreement with the president and partial owner of the company, Cecil Beck. As part of the split, she retained rights to all of the designs produced by the company. The Calla Lily dinnerware line that San Jose Pottery is known for was produced after Harris left the company. Beck sold the company to a New York firm in 1941. The pottery burnt to the ground in 1944. Unable to resume operations, the company went out of business and the building was razed in 1947.Concurrently with her work at San Jose Pottery, the workshop began producing tile murals and wrought iron tile tables for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition. MAC/San Jose Potteries also produced wares for the 1939 New York World's Fair.Harris continued her work with MAC. In 1939, Harris joined the Arts and Crafts Division of the Work Projects Administration (WPA) as a technical supervisor. During this period, she brought 60 WPA artisans into the workshop. Items produced during that period include tilework for public spaces, dinnerware for needy families and other public works. She left the WPA in 1941 to manage the San Jose Mission State park, and moved into living quarters in the mission. The third iteration of her workshop, Mission Crafts, was launched in 1941. This larger workshop featured both more space and a bigger kiln. They collaborated with local iron artisans and produced tilework in wrought-iron frames and tables. Harris eventually retired in 1963, when her son took over the business. Mission Crafts closed in 1977 due to increased production costs.

Solid and stable, not wobbly. 8.75" wide x 7: tall, no wear to gilding. The term "Dresden porcelain" refers more to an artistic movement than a particular line of figurines or dinnerware. Several decorating studios emerged in this Saxony capital in response to the rise of "Romanticism" during the 19th century. Dresden was an important center of this artistic, cultural and intellectual movement, which attracted painters, sculptors, poets, philosophers and porcelain decorators alike. In 1883, in response to the exciting developments happening all around them, four prominent ceramic decorators registered the famous blue crown Dresden mark, and the widely popular "Dresden style" was born.

Sterling Silver Ship Commemorating 20th Year of GAOCMAO Gulf Area Oil Companies<br>Mutual Aid Organization 240 grams. Ship itself is 235 grams, and the brackets<br>that hold it should be at least 5 grams. Without the case the ship measures 9.5"<br>long x 9.5" tall. Case protective case measures 13.25" tall x 12" wide x 8"<br>deep. I am 99% sure this is a one of a kind item that was produced to mark the<br>20 year anniversary of this extremely important occasion and was taken home<br>after retirement or given to a top executive of this organization upon<br>retirement. Fantastic cross collectible and work of art. Tested and guaranteed<br>solid silver. I found one 925 marking, no damage or issues.<br><br>In 1972, a group of oil companies operating in the western half of the Arabian<br>Gulf came together to form an organization for the purpose of improving their<br>capability to combat oil pollution. The companies sought to establish a joint<br>oil spill response capability, not by setting up a separate, operational<br>response group like other more conventional cooperatives, but instead by<br>utilizing the principle of mutual assistance in times of need. The resulting<br>organization, kown as the Gulf Area Oil Companies Mutual Aid Organisation<br>(GAOCMAO), has proved its effectiveness in several major oil pollution incidents<br>over its twelve years of existence and has gained recognition as a credible and<br>responsible representative of the oil industry's views on matters relating to<br>marine pollution in the Gulf region.<br>Subsequent to the establishment of GAOCMAO, environmental awareness in the Gulf<br>area generally has increased very significantly. Regional and state<br>organizations have been set up by the various Gulf states' governments to<br>monitor the environmental effects of industry of all kinds, including oil, and<br>to develop appropriate control measures. To some extent, these changes have been<br>reflected in an expansion of GAOCMAO's interests to areas outside those purely<br>of oil spill response, but the primary commitment to joint response capability<br>through mutual aid has not diminished.

Lorna Hankins La Candelaria Pottery Vessel. 7 5/8" tall with no cracks, chips,<br>or restorations.LORNA HANKINSLorna Hankins, is the well-known potter of La<br>Candelaria that has put this small ranch village located in the mountains<br>between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos on the map, by reviving the ancient<br>methods of creating functional pottery. Lorna is an American with a Masters<br>degree in Fine Arts in the disciplines of Metal Smithing and Jewelry design. She<br>came to Los Cabos for the first time to escape the damp winter of the Northwest<br>and to practice her Spanish. She discovered the small town of La Candelaria and<br>she fell in love with the people, location and lifestyle. She was originally<br>taught the ancient tradition of pottery-making by a woman in the village and it<br>soon became Lorena’s passion to share the knowledge and techniques that she<br>quickly mastered. She taught others in the small town and in no time locals and<br>tourists alike began to hear of the pottery of La Candelaria. Her pieces are<br>beautiful and functional, each being glaze-free and food safe. Her clay is<br>local, the pieces are made and fired in La Candelaria and can be used to cook on<br>an open flame and in the oven, as well as to just be enjoyed as sculpture.TW210

c1900 Moorcroft Style Tubelined Wall Plate Hand decorated with Squeezebag Plate with Woman Chasing Husband with Broom. Really great, likely one of a kind. I believe the reason it's unmarked is there's a slight flaw in the glaze on the top right. In my opinion it's similar in quality to Moorcroft and if it were Moorcroft it would be few thousand dollar piece or more due to the age and great subject matter. Overall crazing, no cracks, chips, or rrestorations. 11.5" wide. I'm sure it's an antique 100+ years old and it's not restored, hand decorated, but that's all I'm really sure about. Could be French Majolica. TW198
