Fits a 1.5" belt. Award winning Kewa Pueblo artist Mitchell Calabaza has been making excellent Southwest Indian Jewelry since the 1970s. Residents of Kewa Pueblo have taken advantage of their proximity to trade routes since ancient times to sell their handmade jewelry and pottery. Before the Spanish arrived in 1540, they were actively involved in the trade of turquoise mined at the nearby Cerrillos mine. When the Spanish established the Camino Real, the trade route that connected Mexico City with Santa Fe, Kewa Pueblo was one of the stopping points along the way. In the early 20th Century, both the railroad and Route 66 traversed the Pueblo. This has given artists a venue to sell their wares and allowed them to maintain their traditional religious practices and social structure. Almost every family has at least one member involved in the production of jewelry making. Calabaza was born in 1949 and lives at Kewa Pueblo today (formerly known as Santo Domingo Pueblo). He is married to Marie Christine Trujillo. He has been an award winner at Santa Fe Indian Market and has exhibited there and at Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show and at the Museum of New Mexico portal display site in Santa Fe. The artist‘s hallmark is made up of the letters CLBZ under a large M which was first used by him in 1977.

Fits a 1.5" belt. Unmarked, attributed. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallace’s trading post and collaborated with amazing Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie. Hopi Pueblo artist Allen Pooyouma began his silver work around 1937 and retired around 1970 making him one of the earliest Hopi silversmiths. He worked many of his professional years in Tucson with master goldsmith Morris Talawytewa Robinson and Ralph Tawangyaouma. Allen Pooyouma is known for silver ingot, hand wrought, heavy stampwork and twist wire jewelry set with high quality, natural turquoise. Allen Pooyouma (1922-2014) signed with his hallmark, a stamped ear of corn, and with conjoined letters, HC. Presented in this way, the HC refers to Hopi Crafts. Formerly known as Hopi Enterprises, Hopi Crafts was started by brothers Wayne and Emory Sekaquaptewa operating on Second Mesa between 1962-1983 Pooyouma was born in Hootvilla, Arizona, and learned silversmithing from his father at age 15. His uncle was the renowned Hopi master Ralph Tawangyawma. During World War II, he continued making jewelry on the reservation due to poor eyesight. Willie Yazzie Sr, Navajo vintage sterling silver bear paw belt buckle. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pictures, circa third quarter of the 20th century. Fits a 1.5" belt. After the success of the overlay designs made at the Hopi Guild many other silversmiths and shops incorporated overlay in their designs (see Overlay is Not Always Hopi Made). Navajo trader Dean Kirk opened his own trading post at Manuelito, New Mexico (between Gallup and the Arizona border) by January 1941. The silver work made in Dean’s shop was typically Navajo tourist type designs and hallmarked UITA22 (under the auspices of the United Indian Traders Association) until about 1951. That’s when Kirk designed a series of overlay pins to be made by Navajo smiths in his employ incorporating Hohokam and Mimbres designs. These designs proved to be very popular, as a 1958 newspaper advertisement for Enchanted Mesa in Albuquerque promoted “Dean Kirk’s Navajo Overlay Silver”. The overlay pieces made at Kirk’s shop were rarely hallmarked.However, one of the Navajo silversmiths who worked for Dean Kirk was Willie Yazzie, he made his own hallmark and used it on pieces he made in Kirk’s shop.Much of the following information was relayed to Alan Ferg (archivist and archaeologist at Arizona State Museum) by William P. (Willie) Yazzie, Jr, in February 2018. Ferg’s investigation of an overlay belt buckle in his possession, lacking a hallmark, has led to previously unrecorded information about Willie Yazzie, as well as the identification of an additional hallmark used by the artist.Willie Yazzie made the overlay bolo at Dean Kirk’s shop, it includes a deer and stylized Hopi designs; a small piece of turquoise is inlaid flush in the deer’s body. He never added “tamp work,” or a textured pattern to the background designs.In 1960 Ansel Hall, concessionaire at Mesa Verde National Park, was looking for a silversmith to demonstrate at the park during the summers months, Dean Kirk recommended Willie Yazzie and he was hired by Hall. Willie worked at Mesa Verde in the summers from 1960 to 1983, except for 1965 when he was sick. Yazzie created a special hallmark to denote pieces he made at Mesa Verde. The mark depicts Square Tower House, a ruin within the park, and was included with his gourd dipper mark during the summers of 1960-1964 and 1966-1983.
