6.25" Ric Charlie Navajo sterling tufa cast cuff bracelet with spiderweb turquoise.Ric Charlie is an accomplished, self-taught Navajo goldsmith who has gained international acclaim for his tufa-cast jewelry. The texture and fine lines he achieves by carving in tufa stone, combined with colorful patinas and semiprecious stones, define Ric Charlie’s work. For nearly three decades, Ric has been drawing upon traditional Navajo techniques while pushing the boundaries to stay on the cutting edge of jewelry design.Charlie's love of color draws him away from the turquoise commonly found in Southwestern jewelry. He instead favors the gold, rust, red, purple, blue, and green patinas he achieves by adding liver of sulfur to the silver. The fine lines in his jewelry are accomplished by cutting tufa stones (compressed volcanic rock) with dental tools.Ric learned basic jewelry-making techniques in 1973 when he was in high school. He studied jewelry-making and design in college at Arizona State University and University of Arizona, and went on to teach himself tufa casting after being inspired by the work of Preston Monongye and Charles Loloma.“Sandcasting is a pretty difficult medium,” Ric Charlie says. “But for me it’s second nature. Everything I do is cast, and 99 percent of them are one-of-a-kind.”In 1983, Ric helped to design and construct the staff and medallion used by the president of Arizona State University.Today, Ric Charlie teaches and advises Native artists in his unique tufa-casting methods, while still producing top-of-the-line work for galleries and collectors around the world. Ric has received numerous awards from competitions at the Heard Museum and Sante Fe Indian Market, including Best of Show, Best of Class, and the Raymond Dewey Memorial Award for Excellence in Tufa Stone Casting.Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. 6.25" Richard Tsosie Navajo Silver cuff bracelet with high grade turquoise and pearl

    1 in stock

Richard Tsosie Navajo Silver cuff bracelet with high grade turquoise and pearl.

Richard is perhaps best known for his distinctive textured silver designs. His trademark techniqie of granulation was discovered by accident when he noticed silver filings were fusing onto a ring he was soldering. He calls the process which produces this granulated surface texture “reticulation,” and he has been perfecting the technique throughout his career.

Born in 1956, Richard has been a jeweler since the mid 1970s. He learned jewelry making from his brother Boyd and from Kenneth Begay at Navajo Community College in Arizona. He quickly progressed from basic tasks of cutting and polishing stones to the more complex process of inlay.

Richard’s contemporary silver and hold work features the use of fabrication, overlay, and granulation. He is also known for colorful inlay work with a variety of natural stones and for his fine degree of control and attention to detail. His designs are motivated by images of the natural world, particularly the Wide Ruins area of the reservation where he spent a large part of his youth. Richard says of his work, “I am inspired by the colors of the mountains at sunset, the patterns of shadow and light that emerge at dawn, and the pinpoints of starlight against the black night sky.”

His pieces typically contain the symbol for lighting and an arrow pattern. The lightning stands for natural causes, while the arrowhead symbolizes man-made elements. Richard says the design represents the ups and downs of life. “Some things we can’t do anything about and you should try to enjoy life to the fullest.”

Therefore, he never had the traditional education his siblings had. His apprenticeship began at the age of eight and he worked with his father until his death in 1959. He once said, “I would like to have gone to school and served my people on the Tribal Council. Roger Skeets Jr. still uses some of the same stamps of his fathers in his work today, a wonderful piece of Navajo silver history. He became known for his stamp work on concho belts. He has made thousands of these belts, a tradition started by his father, Roger Skeet Sr., who was one of C.G. Wallaces frequently used smiths. He began using the hallmark RS in about 1950. 1 in stock

6.25" UITA6 1930's Navajo ingot silver and turquoise cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics. Beginning in 1931, The United Indian Trader’s Association (UITA), a volunteer organization of leading Southwestern Indian traders, created and enforced a strict set of quality standards for the making and selling of Navajo and Pueblo jewelry in the trading posts of its various members. UITA’s distinctive hallmark of its initials UITA with an arrowhead in the middle followed by the numeric designation of the particular trading company it was made at or for was a guarantee of the highest quality Native jewelry; completely handmade using solely traditional methods of craftsmanship and use of only the finest, traditional materials. Since the UITA traders were the most important “Who’s-who” of their day they were well-equipped to set and enforce such high standards and as a result, the finest jewelry pieces made under UITA’s auspices are some of the very finest Navajo and Pueblo pieces of the 20th Century. "The United Indian Traders Association (UITA) was established on September 13, 1931 for the expressed purpose of authentication of Indian crafts. At the time, the UITA was an important player both in Indian cultural life and in advocating for the sale of authentic Indian arts and crafts." “UITA 6” was the numeric designation assigned to the historic and extremely remote Borrego Pass Trading Post, set in the high pinon-juniper studded hills about 50 miles south of Chaco Canyon in Northwestern New Mexico. The post first opened in 1927 and was named after the nearby Borrego Pass, an ancient water gap across the Continental Divide where Navajos used to drive their sheep. Borrego Pass Trading Post was operated by several highly influential prominent Indian traders over the next fifty-plus years, including Ben and Anna Harvey, Bill and Jean Cousins and Don and Fern Smouse. The Navajo know Borrego Pass in the Navajo language as “Tiish Bito” (Snake Spring) or “Dibe Yazhi Habitiin” meaning "Upward Path of the Lamb." Don Smouse was the chief Judge for silversmithing for the Navajo Nation for a time and dealt with the highest quality turquoise from around the world. The Trading Post was Borrego Pass Trading Post along the continental divide just south and west of Crownpoint, New Mexico. The Smouse's were old time traders and at one point were the oldest living traders in the USA and were on the national news during the 90's for still trading the old way. Don helped train the top artists in the trade and sold there jewelry from the trading Post. They had buyers come from the Middle East, Europe and Asia for the top quality product being produced. The stamp is the Smouse traders stamp.

Many nephews and relatives who travelled with him to and fence building remember his stories, his humor, and jokes. Fred was very hospitable by opening his home to many people who needed a place to stay, needed a place to rehabilitate, and/or just needed to get it together. He lived in Alamo most of his life, but also shortly in To’hajiilee, and Socorro. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed,

I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn‘t an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I‘ve seen thousands of pieces xrf‘d to prove this. 6.25" Willie Yazzie, Sr. (Navajo), 1928-1999 silver/copper overlay cuff bracelet

    1 in stock

6.25" Navajo Willie Yazzie Overlay silver/copper cuff bracelet. Solid sterling silver with copper basket ring. After the success of the overlay designs made at the Hopi Guild many other silversmiths and shops incorporated overlay in their designs (see Overlay is Not Always Hopi Made). Navajo trader Dean Kirk opened his own trading post at Manuelito, New Mexico (between Gallup and the Arizona border) by January 1941. The silver work made in Dean’s shop was typically Navajo tourist type designs and hallmarked UITA22 (under the auspices of the United Indian Traders Association) until about 1951. That’s when Kirk designed a series of overlay pins to be made by Navajo smiths in his employ incorporating Hohokam and Mimbres designs. These designs proved to be very popular, as a 1958 newspaper advertisement for Enchanted Mesa in Albuquerque promoted “Dean Kirk’s Navajo Overlay Silver”. The overlay pieces made at Kirk’s shop were rarely hallmarked. However, one of the Navajo silversmiths who worked for Dean Kirk was Willie Yazzie, he made his own hallmark and used it on pieces he made in Kirk’s shop.Much of the following information was relayed to Alan Ferg (archivist and archaeologist at Arizona State Museum) by William P. (Willie) Yazzie, Jr, in February 2018. Ferg’s investigation of an overlay belt buckle in his possession, lacking a hallmark, has led to previously unrecorded information about Willie Yazzie, as well as the identification of an additional hallmark used by the artist.Willie Yazzie made the overlay bolo at Dean Kirk’s shop, it includes a deer and stylized Hopi designs; a small piece of turquoise is inlaid flush in the deer’s body. His Navajo wedding basket pin incorporates a small piece of copper to symbolize the red band in traditional wedding baskets. Willie Yazzie made the overlay bolo at Dean Kirk’s shop, it includes a deer and stylized Hopi designs; a small piece of turquoise is inlaid flush in the deer’s body. His Navajo wedding basket pin incorporates a small piece of copper to symbolize the red band in traditional wedding baskets.According to Social Security records, Willie A. Yazzie was born at Chinle, Arizona in 1928. His son says he learned silverwork at Dean Kirk’s trading post in Manuelito in the early 1950s, and created his touchmark (or hallmark) no later than 1960, and after that time his pieces made at Dean Kirk’s would have included his gourd dipper hallmark. His designs often incorporated animal figures such as roadrunners or Navajo designs including Yeis and Father Sky. He never added “tamp work,” or a textured pattern to the background designs. In 1960 Ansel Hall, concessionaire at Mesa Verde National Park, was looking for a silversmith to demonstrate at the park during the summers months, Dean Kirk recommended Willie Yazzie and he was hired by Hall. Willie worked at Mesa Verde in the summers from 1960 to 1983, except for 1965 when he was sick. Yazzie created a special hallmark to denote pieces he made at Mesa Verde. The mark depicts Square Tower House, a ruin within the park, and was included with his gourd dipper mark during the summers of 1960-1964 and 1966-1983.Marked or unmarked as shown in the pics. If a mark isn't shown then it isn't marked which is common with pre 1970's Native American jewelry that isn't from one of the larger trading posts. 6.25" Wilson Begay Navajo turquoise silver cast cuff bracelet

    1 in stock

6.25" Wilson Begay Navajo turquoise silver cast cuff braceletWilson and Carol Begay are traditional Navajo silversmiths. These talented silversmiths have been creating traditional Navajo jewelry since 1969. They came from families well known for their jewelry making. Wilson’s father, Luke, taught John Adair, author of “Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths” how to make sand cast jewelry. He worked for many years with Mike and Dean Kirk, at the famous Kirk Brothers Trading Company in Gallup, New Mexico.Carol’s parents, Angela and Allen Chee were both silversmiths who worked by C.G. Wallace, the famous jewelry trader from Zuni, New Mexico. The Begays began their career making sandcast jewelry, a traditional type of Navajo jewelry that requires the artist to make carvings in Tufa stone to make forms to shape molten silver. They first worked for Tobe Tupen, a well known trader in Gallup. Carol remembers that silver was only $1.25 an ounce when they started.Today they are independent artists whose work is widely sought after and admired. Wilson concentrates on the casting and building the foundations of the jewelry and Carol sets the stones and does the finishing work. They work together to design their jewelry.Traditional sandcast silver jewelry is a unique Navajo art form. The process, although it sounds simple, requires careful discipline and years of practice to obtain quality results. The artist takes two pieces of pumice stone and grinds them together to create two flat surfaces. Then the design is carved into one of the two pumice stones. An opening is carved from the design to the top and bottom of the stone. The two pieces of stone are then tied together so that the carved design is between the two flat areas. Silver is then melted in a crucible, and when it reaches the proper molten form, it is poured into the opening on the top of the design. If it is the proper temperature, it flows through to the bottom where it cools and hardens, filling the design space. After cooling, the stones are separated, the casting removed and the protrusions on the top and bottom are cut off. The silver is then filed smooth and shaped. If stones are to be set on the piece, the artist builds a silver bezel to hold the stone and then solders it to the piece of jewelry. Sawdust is put in the bottom of the bezel to cushion the stone and the bezel is tightened. The piece is then polished to the shine the artist likes.Wilson Begay of Gallup is the acknowledged master of the art of sandcast jewelry. Luke Begay, Wilson's grandfather, demonstrated this skill to John Adair in the early 1930's when Adair was conducting a survey of native silversmiths of the Smithsonian. Luke taught the skill to Wilson as a young man. Today, in his 60's, Wilson continues to make sandcast jewelry in his Gallup home. His wife, Carol, chooses the stones to be used and sets them in bezels. The Begays have three daughters, Nichole, Yvonne and Bonnie, are continuing the family tradition.Wilson's stamped signature is a flat brimmed Navajo hat with his initials under it. His signature is one of the most recognized in Indian jewelry. His work has won top awards at the Gallup Inter-tribal Ceremonial and is a "must have" for serious collectors of contemporary Indian jewelry. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed,

  • Preston Monongye (Hopi) (1927-1987) Tufa Cast Rose Gold Channel inlay bracelet - Estate Fresh Austin

6.3" Preston Monongye (Hopi)Tufa Cast Rose Gold Channel inlay cuff bracelet

    1 in stock

Preston Monongye (Hopi) (1927-1987) Tufa Cast Rose Gold Channel inlay bracelet. Fits up to a 6 3/8" wrist, tapers from 20mm to 30mm wide. One of a kind bracelet, extremely rare example in gold. Preston Monongye did not work in a lot of gold, very few pieces have come to market ever, when they do they are crazy expensive. I personally had this machine tested on a $30,000+ XRF machine and it ranges from 40-43% gold (Averaging about 10k) which actually makes perfect sense. Since P Monongye didn't work with a lot of gold, the times he did were likely somewhat experimental. In this case it is somewhat obvious that he melted up some scrap gold, likely some that was brought to him by a customer or friend to make this which was likely a custom piece. The lowest gold content shot we took showed it at 48.13% copper, 40.08% gold, 8.18% silver, 3.49% zinc, and .12% Nickel.Preston Monongye (1927-1987) was an influential proponent of what he called “the new Indian art.” He wrote, “We may use old techniques, along with old designs taken from potsherds or pictographs, but then we redesign them or add innovations of our own.”Preston had an unconventional and late blossoming path to jewelry making. He served in two wars, worked in law enforcement, and was an employee for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It was later in life that he decided to dedicate himself full time to jewelry making, which was received numerous awards. He had always experimented with jewelry and craftsmanship, but did not receive acclaim until fully committing to his art. Preston primarily did the metalwork and design for his pieces, letting his friend and acclaimed lapidary artist Lee Yazzie do the inlay, and later allowing his son Jesse Monongye to do his lapidary work. His pieces are exhibited nationwide.Born in East Los Angeles, California, to Mexican and Mission Indian parents, Monongye was adopted by a Hopi family at age seven. He was raised Hopi, speaking the Hopi language and participating in the Katsina Society. At age nine, Monongye began apprenticeship with his uncle, the master silversmith and painter Gene Pooyama. “He taught me how to live the ‘Hopi way,'” Monongye recalled. Throughout his career, Hopi colors and images were prominent in Monongye’s work. But Monongye was adamant that Native jewelry not be bound by the past, explaining, “An old piece of philosophy given to me by my father and other men of the Hopi Mesas is, ‘If you can progress without hurting your tradition or your , you should do so.”Born in 1927, in Los Angeles he was abandoned at Hopi at age seven and adopted by a prominent Hopi family. Monongye attended reservation schools and became a full participant in Hopi and social life. Following his service as a paratrooper in World War II, Monongye became a Kachina painter, working occasionally for trader Roman Hubbell and the Fred Harvey Company. Monongye re-enlisted during the Korean War and later worked in law enforcement for the Bureau of Indian Affairs while continuing to paint and make silver jewelry. After leaving his job in favor of jewelry making in the early 1960s, Monongye quickly became recognized as an innovative designer and technician, immersing himself in “the new Indian art,” using traditional techniques and motifs to create a contemporary new look. He was best known for cast silver set with stones that often were cut by his friend Lee Yazzie, and later by his son Jesse. Monongye taught his art at various schools and workshops and lectured widely on contemporary Native design. He won many awards at shows and competitions and his jewelry appears in museum collections such as the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff and the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe.
