Buddy Lee Mossman Choctaw 14k gold, sterling silver lapis, fossilized coral pin. Solid 14k gold feather and center accent bead, solid sterling silver tested and guaranteed with weight and measurements in the pictures. No issues, Circa last quarter of the 20th century. 37 grams Buddy Lee Mossman, a Santa Fean and one of the most unique artists of the Southwest, was born in Missouri, and, he claimed, of Choctaw descent. His creative forces began to emerge in the 1980s at which time he began teaching himself the art of silversmithing. Buddy drew from the works of three late great artists: renowned Chiricahua Apache sculptor, Allan Houser (Haozous), Master Hopi Silversmith. Charles Loloma and Spanish Great, Pablo Picasso. While his pieces mirror the Sacredness of Houser, the Decorativeness of Loloma and the Surrealism of Picasso, Mossman was an artist in his own right. Buddy considered his Jewelry sculptures. The smallest simplest ring to the biggest ornamental Kachina Bolo was sacred.

No issues, Circa second quarter of the 20th century, "The United Indian Traders Association (UITA) was established on September 13, 1931 for the expressed purpose of authentication of Indian crafts. At the time, the UITA was an important player both in Indian cultural life and in advocating for the sale of authentic Indian arts and crafts." “UITA 6” was the numeric designation assigned to the historic and extremely remote Borrego Pass Trading Post, set in the high pinon-juniper studded hills about 50 miles south of Chaco Canyon in Northwestern New Mexico. The post first opened in 1927 and was named after the nearby Borrego Pass, an ancient water gap across the Continental Divide where Navajos used to drive their sheep. Borrego Pass Trading Post was operated by several highly influential prominent Indian traders over the next fifty-plus years, including Ben and Anna Harvey, Bill and Jean Cousins and Don and Fern Smouse. The Navajo know Borrego Pass in the Navajo language as “Tiish Bito” (Snake Spring) or “Dibe Yazhi Habitiin” meaning "Upward Path of the Lamb." Don Smouse was the chief Judge for silversmithing for the Navajo Nation for a time and dealt with the highest quality turquoise from around the world. The Trading Post was Borrego Pass Trading Post along the continental divide just south and west of Crownpoint, New Mexico. The Smouse's were old time traders and at one point were the oldest living traders in the USA and were on the national news during the 90's for still trading the old way. Don helped train the top artists in the trade and sold there jewelry from the trading Post. They had buyers come from the Middle East, Europe and Asia for the top quality product being produced. The stamp is the Smouse traders stamp.

No issues, circa mid 20th century. Dated 1949. Kenneth Begay (1913-1977) was called the “father of modern Navajo jewelry” for his clean, bold, modern designs. But he also exemplifies the long history and continuity of Navajo jewelry-making: Begay studied under Fred Peshlakai, who had been taught by his father, Slender Maker of Silver, who was trained by Atsidi Chon, one of the earliest Navajo silversmiths. Begay in turn taught many others including his son, Harvey, now a renowned jeweler. Though deeply rooted in traditional jewelry-making techniques, Begay’s work was so innovative that it was rejected from a 1949 exhibition of Native art as too radical. Although he used and taught the old techniques, Begay explained near the end of his life, “I like to create something new and still use the old Navajo design style.”

Roan was included in the 2002 exhibit “Jewels of the Southwest” at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Santa Fe. His work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, and the Yellowhorse Museum in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Ramon Albert Jr Dalangyawma Hopi Overlay Kokopelli pendant/pin sterling silver. Solid sterling silver, marked as shown with weight and measurements in the pictures. No damage or significant wear. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Marked with Hopicrafts hallmark the artists older RA hallmark. Ramon Dalangyawma Born Ramon Albert, Jr. (a non-Hopi surname), his grandmother gave him the name Dalangyawma, a name of the Greasewood Clan. As a young man, he attended school in Santa Fe and served in the US Marines. Ramon began his silver working career in 1978 at Hopicrafts then located near the village of Hotevilla. His designs come from his experiences in life - clouds, thunderbolts and rain - important in an area with no irrigation for crops; and bear, spider, antelope, prayer feathers, kachinas, kokopelli, corn - the clan religious symbols, the basis of Hopi life. Ramon‘s work is characterized by the very heavy weight (thickness) silver he uses and his laser like precision in cutting out his designs and meticulous background stamping - nothing but the highest quality. He is a very fine man who we are proud to call our friend! Ramon uses his name stamped into the reverse of his pieces as his hallmark. Earlier examples of his work were marked with a composite RA. Ramon lives in Hotevilla. His son Cheston was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp and graduated from Arizona State University where he obtained his Master‘s Degree in Criminal Justice. At present, Cheston is living in Artesia, NM and working as an instructor at the Federal Police Academy. Mindful of his role in encouraging the next generation of Native American artisans, Fritz has returned as an instructor to the Poeh Arts Center in Pojoaque, NM, where he was once a student. His time as a teacher has helped to strengthen his own skills as a jewelry-maker and inspires him and his students to experiment with progressive designs. An amiable spirit, Fritz explains that his fashion-forward, sculptural jewelry designs are a combination of forethought and serendipitous discovery, resulting in jewelry that excites both his students and collectors. Huge 1940‘s Leo Poblano Zuni multi-stone inlay butterfly pin sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pics, all solid sterling. All stones/inlay secure in bezels with very old fracture to jet inlay in center at bottom inlaid turquoise. Circa mid 20th century, unmarked other than C.G. Wallace code on the reverse side. Attributed to Leo Poblano family. Very big pin, it would be a big belt buckle by most standards. The "Average" men‘s belt buckle is 3" wide, this is 3.5" wide. Leo Poblano (1905-1959) is considered one of the most renowned Zuni stoneworkers of the 20th century for his innovative and skillful designs. At a time when most Zuni jewelers worked with traditional themes and materials, Leo experimented and is thought to be one of the first Zuni inlay artists to use decorative elements in his carvings. After serving in the military in World War 2, Leo returned to Zuni Pueblo where he continued to make stone mosaic jewelry as well as work for the BIA as a wildlands firefighter. Because of his friendship with Zuni trader C.G. Wallace, Leo was able to work with the finest turquoise and other high quality stones for his pieces. Wallace would also assign Leos stone pieces to Navajo silversmiths for mounting on silver boxes, finger rings, pendants, and other adornments. Leos first wife, Daisy Hooee Nampeyo, studied at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and taught Leo many lapidary relief techniques which helped enhance his stone inlay pieces. Leos second wife, Ida Vacit, who was also an inlay artist, finished many of the pieces that Leo left behind after his abrupt death due to a tragic firefighting accident in 1959. Leos pieces, known for their attention to detail, impeccable technique, and innovative style are part of many notable collections including the Heard Museum and the Wheelwright Museum. He is succeeded by his daughter, Veronica Poblano, who is also an award winning Zuni artist.
