  • Wilson Dawes Navajo Sterling Silver Yei be Chai Inlay Tufa Cast Pendant

Wilson Dawes Navajo Sterling Silver Yei be Chai Inlay Tufa Cast Pendant

    Out of stock

Measures 4 inches long x 1.75 inches wide. This piece is done in a Tufa Cast<br>style and has inlay of the Yei be Chai in Synthetic Opal, Coral and Turquoise on<br>the front. The Yei be Chai are dancers representing the Navajo Holy people.<br>Stamped Sterling and Hand Signed on back near the top. Weighs 55.2 Grams. Native<br>American, Navajo, Southwestern Indian Jewelry.<br><br>Tufa Jewelry: Tufa is a volcanic stone which can be as dense as chalk which has<br>an organic texture. The first thing a jeweler does is examine a piece of tufa<br>for any tiny fractures. If it looks good, the tufa is cut in half and, if there<br>is a design, it is carved into the tufa. There is a pour hole carved into the<br>top and several narrow vents carved into each side. The two pieces are then<br>bound together tightly and molten silver or gold is poured through the hole at<br>the top. If there are any microscopic cracks, the tufa explodes when the metal<br>is poured in and the process has to begin again.

So men can wear it too just be prepared<br>to put your belt on the opposite direction which I realize may freak some people<br>out. Or you could just wear it upside down if that's easier.

1950's Frank Patania Sr(1899-1964) Modernist southwestern Sterling RC Bolo tie.<br>2" wide bolo slide 37.7 grams with no issues. Rare possibly one of a kind, Frank<br>Patania and his studio did a lot of custom pieces. This is obviously the RC Cola<br>logo but at this point I have no way of knowing if it were made for say a<br>company exec or someone with the initials RC. Shouldn't really matter, it's very<br>cool.<br><br>All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry<br>referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)<br>silver and possibly higher content. Anything marked is guaranteed to be what<br>it's marked, most bracelets are photographed on a 6" wrist (non hairy), rings<br>photographed on the appropriate sized finger when possible. With bracelets if<br>the measurement is not given in the description then inside circumference is<br>shown where the metal meets the number on the the cloth tape measure.<br><br>Frank Patania Sr. immigrated to New York City in 1908. Child labor laws kept the<br>young man from working as a craftsman, but after World War I he was old enough<br>to be hired as a designer for an important jewelry firm. In 1924 he contracted<br>tuberculosis, and the firm sent him to a sanatorium in Santa Fe, New Mexico.<br>Patania was seduced by the active art colony and healthy climate, and chose to<br>remain in the Southwest even after his health improved. His work reflects both<br>his European training and his exposure to Pueblo and Navajo jewelry.<br><br>The legacy left by Frank Patania, Sr. came from the integration of two<br>distinctly different traditions-one European, and the other Native American. On<br>the one hand, Frank Sr. drew from a long history of Italian creative spirit,<br>combining technical expertise and artistic imagination. He instilled in his<br>family the Italian commitment to fine craftsmanship, as well as the Italian<br>custom of family corporate bonding.<br><br>This uniquely Italian tradition can be traced back as far as the Renaissance,<br>and provides a structure in which each member of an artisan family has a job to<br>perform that contributes to the family enterprise. This familial check and<br>balance system has been a powerful asset to the Patania family's continued<br>standard of excellence through the years. But Frank Sr.'s style was drastically<br>transformed when he was introduced to the work of southwest Native American<br>jewelers in the 1920s.<br><br>His inspiration was multi-faceted; he began to work in a new medium-silver and<br>turquoise-as well as in increased scale, and using new techniques. The<br>successful marriage of these two disparate traditions has become the foundation<br>upon which each generation has maintained the tradition of excellence in<br>craftsmanship and design that has come to be known as the "Patania Thunderbird"<br>style.

    1 in stock

Fantastic ring signed David SM Allende. Sz 6.5 1 1/8" face. 14.5 grams. High quality sterling and turquoise ring with no issues. Davíd ínez became one of the most interesting and innovative silversmiths and jewelers in San Miguel de Allende. Today, he is a master of his craft. Watching him work, you can see his confidence in the sureness of his hand, the familiarity with which he handles his tools. "You have to be very relaxed to make jewelry, very comfortable with yourself," he claims. "And you can't be in a hurry."He says he's never sure how a piece will turn out when he starts. He doesn't draw his pieces in advance. His work is all freestyle. "Sometimes I don't have any idea. I put some nice music on and let it guide me."His designs come from his head and his heart. "Most of the time, the stone tells you what it wants to be," he explains. "Then you just have to provide it." The results are fresh, different. People familiar with his work can often look at a case full of jewelry, point to one piece and say "That's a Davíd ínez design."No two pieces are ever exactly alike, though sometimes he'll see a copy of a piece he's made. "If people steal my designs, well, I'm glad to be an inspiration for them. It took me a while to get to that point. I used to get mad. Now, I just make something different."A San Miguel ArtistNow in his 40s, Davíd ínez has found his voice and his art. He lives with his wife Claudia and their daughter, Andrea, 8. He makes his jewelry, shares his skills with others. He now teaches in one-on-one sessions. Most of his students are Americans."First you learn the basics, how to make a clean bezel to hold the stone. You learn to work with sheet, wire, how to solder. But really it's all basic. What's a bracelet? It's a band. What's a ring? It's a band. Then you hammer it, burn it, melt it, stamp it. It's just metal. But the metal becomes alive by what you do to it."From papel mache painter to tinsmith to ditch digger to waiter to silversmith to consummate San Miguel artist, Davíd ínez has lived an adventure and arrived back home.
