• c1800 Hand Forged colonial betty lamp 1 - Estate Fresh Austin

c1800 Hand Forged colonial betty lamp 1

    1 in stock

Nice Heavy forged iron betty lamp. Very minor loss to tip of door, no other issues, no holes. 3 3/8" x 4.25" , 10.5" tall with hanger extended. This early betty lamp burned grease for lighting in the 19th century. It is called a 'betty lamp' which comes from the word 'besser' in German (meaning better). Far superior to the rushlight or splint lamp, it evolved from the crusie lamp with the addition of a cover and a wick support which ensured that any oil/grease drippings from the wick flowed back into the reservoir. The betty lamp was probably the most widely used means of lighting among people of middle or lower income until refined whale oil became common. It burned any fat or oil that was available virtually without smell or smoke, using a twisted cotton wick. B70

c1920 San Antonio Texas Quack Medicine Radio Magnetic Nerve Vitalizer with
Paperwork Describing Cures. Interesting and rare. Includes prospectus of
purposed corporation to distribute this device. So I actually believe this was
the salesmans' sample that they used to try to sell the device. In this paper it
states their price was $40-$50 in 1919, so they likely never sold any as I can
find no evidence of another existing. It cured crippled people, crossed eyed
people, all that good stuff. Untested by me. The corners to the box lid are
split.
If you're the gullible type please don't buy this expecting it you cure all your
ailments. THE JUDD COMPANY WALLINGFORD, CN 1830 - 1954 The Judd ancestry can be traced back to Deacon Thomas Judd who came from England and settled in Cambridge, MA in 1633/4. Deacon Morton Judd, born in 1808, learned his trade in a brass foundry and then, established his own business in 1830. In 1833, Morton's brother, Oliver S., joined the company as partner and the name was changed to M & O.S. Judd. In 1853, Morton's eldest son, Albert, replaced Oliver S. as the business partner. And, the company's name was changed to M. Judd & Sons. In 1863, Albert purchased the business and sold it back to his uncle, Oliver S. In 1865, Morton and Albert formed their own company to manufacture "Builder's Hardware" in New Haven, CN. In 1870, the business evolved to the Judd Manufacturing Company when Edward, Oliver S.'s brother, became President. In 1877, Morton and his three sons, Albert, Hubert L. & Edward, erected a plant in Wallingford, CN where they began a busness to manufacture Stationers' and Druggists' hardware. It was during this time that the company became well known for their still and mechanical banks. (The first mechanical bank had been introduced in 1869. This bank was known as "Hall's Excelsior" made by J.& E. Stevens.) Judd banks were usually finished in a brown or maroon lacquer and were washed in a green coloring. Not until the early 1910's, did the company start making "Cast Iron " decorative products, such as, Doorstops, Bookends, Doorknockers, Inkwells. The Judd Company was sold to the Stanley Works Company in1954. isshelf

    1 in stock

c1830 Yellowware Jug 1754 Building Keene New Hampshire Main Street. Good early jug. It's a darker shade of yellow, possibly english. I don't think it's from 1754, I think it's from the first half of the 19th century. It has a short tight hairline on one side of the spout that I didn't see until I was photographing it and I've had it for a really long time. No other damage. The paint is overglazed but it's old. I don't know if the paint is from the 1840's or the 1940's. it's 5.5" tall x 9" handle to spout. There were some Hampshire pottery pieces with similar decoration. Possibly one of the Hampshire artists was playing around with an antique jug 100 years ago, not sure. tw96

    1 in stock

Antique American Folk art puppet carved wood artists doll Milt Simpson Estate.
Amazing item on high quality museum grade stand. This is from the Estate of
Milton Simpson, author of several books and publications of Folk a. He was the
graphic designer who discovered the Woodbridge figures collection in New Jersey.
Not the construction worker that found them but the person who purchased them
all from a local pawn shop and recognized their importance. There is a very high
probability this piece is published in one or more of his books/publications.
It's a great hand carved, one of a kind piece. It's 9" tall and happens to be
painted black, if it were painted white, green, yellow, purple it would be
equally important in my eyes, really just a strange and wonderful thing with
these orange breasts, etc.

Milton Simpson (1911-2023)
Milton – also known by his friends and acquaintances as Milt - was born and
raised in Brooklyn, New York City and raised his family in Millburn, New Jersey.
He attended the New York School of Industrial Art (SIA), now the School of Art
and Design. He then worked for Incorporated Ideas Advertising Agency in New
Jersey before joining the United States Army, serving in Korea.
After his discharge from the Army, Milt attended The Workshop School of
Advertising & Editorial Art.
