Kenneth Begay Navajo White Hogan Modernist Sterling Agate pendant/pin
Kenneth Begay Navajo White Hogan Modernist Sterling Agate pendant/pin. Amazing piece, it‘s obvious that this silver frame was created especially for this stone. No issues. Weight and measurements in pics. Kenneth Begay (19131977) was called the “Father of Contemporary Navajo jewelry for his clean, bold, modern designs. Begay began as a blacksmith, took his first course in silversmithing from Fred Peshlakai at the Fort Wingate Vocational School for the Native Americans in Fort Wingate, New Mexico in 1938. Fred Peshlakai had been taught by his father, Slender Maker of Silver, who was trained by Atsidi Chon, one of the earliest Navajo silversmiths. Begay in turn taught traditional techniques of silversmithing to his own students from 1968-1973 at Navajo Community College in Many Farms, Arizona. In 1946, Begay started working with John Bonnell at the White Hogan shop in Flagstaff, Arizona, beginning an 18 year relationship. In collaboration with Bonnell, Begay moved Indian jewelry beyond personal adornment and into the arena of pure metalsmithing making, amongst other things, flatware sets, plates, boxes, and vessels of various kinds. Although highly unusual at this time among silversmiths, 1951-1952, he also began signing his jewelry using KB. When working for the White Hogan he additionally stamped his pieces with a small hogan. A master metalsmith, Kenneth Begay was very creative and strongly influenced by his traditional background. In his jewelry this translated to a balance between silver, stone and bold but unpretentious designs. He created clean, elegant designs based on streamlined shapes that were repeated to form balanced and harmonious patterns, a style that has been compared to Navajo weaving. Although he used and taught the old techniques, Begay explained near the end of his life, “I like to create something new and still use the old Navajo design style. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. Frank Patania Sr. (1899-1964) Modernist sterling and turquoise pendant
Frank Patania Sr. (1899-1964) Modernist sterling and turquoise pendant. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Frank Patania Sr. (1899-1964) was born in Sicily and immigrated to the United States at an early age. He began working as a jeweler at age 6, first apprenticing in Italy, and later with a goldsmith in New York. He moved out to the West after contracting tuberculosis and settled in Santa Fe. Frank had always worked in gold, but was profoundly inspired by Native American jewelry. In 1927, he opened the Thunderbird Shop in Santa Fe, and employed local Native American silversmiths. "After my first sight of the West, I never wanted to return east again. And when I saw what the Indians were doing with silver and turquoise I knew I had found the medium in which I wanted to design." These materials were new to him, but he quickly became one of the most innovative and skilled jewelers of his time. His style grew more refined and his fame grew, attracting important patrons such as Georgia O‘Keeffe and Mable Dodge Lujan. Several of his assistants became renowned silversmiths in their own right, most notably his son Frank Jr. and Santo Domingo jeweler Julian Lovato. sz7.5 Thomas Curtis (1942-2013) Navajo silver feather ring
sz7.5 Thomas Curtis (1942-2013) Navajo silver feather ring, adjustable. Thomas Curtis was an award winning, self-taught Navajo Silversmith; a master who pursued his art for over 50 years. He is best known and loved for his painstakingly beautiful handcrafted precision stamp work in heavy-gauge silver creating sophistically stimulating jewelry. Born in 1942 into a family of skilled silversmiths, Thomas Curtis observed the secrets of his familys finely crafted silver work and began creating traditional Navajo jewelry by the age of 12. Before committing himself completely to the art of metalsmithing, Curtis was a champion horseback rider and won many awards as a member of the All-Indian Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association performing bareback, bull riding and saddle bronc. The rodeo is where he was given his acclaimed surname, ‘Curtis. Born as Thomas Redhorse, his family name was the source of many jokes while working in the rodeo and was given the name ‘Curtis by a stock contractor who wished him to be recognized for his riding talent and not overshadowed by a name. After somersaulting backwards off of a horse and injuring himself in 1969, Thomas left the rodeo to pursue his craft as a silversmith full time. Thomas Curtis grew up observing his uncle who was a blacksmith and had a business repairing wagons. “It was like todays car garage, he had wagons lined up. I would help him, I was fascinated by all of the tools and I had an interest in working with metal. Curtis elaborated on his fascinations with blacksmithing while working in the rodeo, and continued them into his jewelry making career by hand making the hardened steel die stamps that identified him as one of the premier Navajo silversmiths of his time. Thomas Curtis believed an artist should be a part of every process in the creation of their work, and he took monumental pride in the art of making his own die stamps for his harmonious arrangements. Curtis was often quoted finding inspiration for his pieces by, “looking at the ground, the sky, the plants, and the four seasons. He also turned to sacred traditions, sourcing his patterns and descriptive style from traditional weavings, historic and contemporary construction from the 1890s-1940s, and adapted classic ketoh designs for the lids of the elaborate silver boxes he is known for. Thomas Curtis had an extreme talent for delicately balancing compositions of traditional design motifs with his intense skill, generating dramatic results with refined charisma. With only an 8th grade education he excelled as an artist and craftsman who, like his precision stampwork, deeply embedded a profound mark in the history of jewelry making, raising the standard for quality work and inspiring others to push themselves to greater heights. Thomas Curtis passed away June 29, 2013 and left behind a collection of finely crafted Navajo jewelry and a remarkably gifted daughter, Jennifer Curtis, who carries his legacy as a master silversmith creating exceptional work inspired by her fathers unyielding hard work and lifelong dedication to his art. . Ernest Thomas Bilagody Navajo sterling Royston turquoise pendant
Ernest Thomas Bilagody Navajo sterling Royston turquoise pendant. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Ernest Thomas Bilagody Navajo silversmith Ernest Thomas Bilagody (ETB) was born in Tuba City, Arizona to the Red House Big Water Clan and has been immersed in his trade for the better part of his life. His grandparents are from the Around the House Clan and the Bitter Water Clan. This craftsman was guided by his mother early on and continued those traditions into his adult years. He worked as a silversmith for over 35 years, since the mid 1970s, until his passing in 2014. His mother started him out with buffing the earrings she made. From there she gave him other duties, such as soldering things for her. With this beginning, Ernest started making his own jewelry, and he did not ever look back. He continued those traditions into his adult years. Ernest worked out of his own home, and worked for various traders. Along the way he met many other silver and goldsmiths, and he always enjoyed sharing stories about the metals, turquoises and other materials they use. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. Wayne (1942-2006) and his wife Virginia (1940- ) were born in Zuni, NM and started making jewelry in the 1960‘s. He learned from his mother, Alice Quam.
