His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style.The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM.He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him.Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004.Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. Collected, but never worn it seems. Howard Sice (Hopi - Laguna) Arizona, USA Native American jewelry artist. He is self taught. Over his career, he has been the recipient of countless awards, including Best of Show and 1st Place. He was raised on the Laguna Pueblo of Paraje but split time with relatives in Hopi so his work displays strong influences from both cultures. He served twenty years in the Air Force inclusive of a year in Vietnam. While in the service he obtained a degree in a special area of medical research (lab work). While still in the service, in 1972, he started working in jewelry in 1972. He has added to his skills over the years. It was once he started engraving in 1985 that his metal work became distinctly identifiable. I love that he still does small, dainty pieces that are affordable to virtually anyone. I purchased a pair of his earrings in an airport store in Denver 25 years ago for myself without knowing who he was. I still love them and wear them regularly. He has fairly recently started working with several very interesting materials. The first is Niobium. I probably shouldn‘t even mention it given I sold out of the pieces I bought before I got a chance to post them but I will get more at some point. Niobium is a metal that, when oxidized, can take on some beautiful colors. The other metal Howard is working in is Argentium silver. Standard Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Argentium is classified as Sterling as it still has a 92.5% silver content but a small portion of the copper has been replaced by Germanium. The result is startling. There are a number of advantages to the artist in how they can work with the material but to the end user (and me) the difference is the huge reduction is tarnishing. The finished work also is amazingly bright, noticeably more so than even the most polished standard Sterling. Argentium requires makers (artists) be registered with them to utilize the distinct hallmark of a flying unicorn. Howard is a registered user and is moving over to the use of Argentium almost exclusively. I will mark on each piece if it is Argentium. Artist may USE Argentium without registration but may not use the hallmark. I had some work by Myron Panteah that I‘m all but certain was Argentium but was not hallmarked as such. Howard‘s business is a family affair with both his wife, Patricia and daughter being heavily involved. His daughter is an accomplished silversmith. They are lovely people and I really enjoyed their company this year (2017) at Prescott Indian Market.

William Comyns & Sons was one of the most notable London silversmithing firms of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, renowned for its exceptional decorative silverwork. William Comyns founded the company in 1858, following his apprenticeship with George J. Richards. He initially operated from the former premises of silversmith Robert Tagg at 2 Carlisle Street, Soho, London, where he registered his first makers mark (W.C in a four-tipped oval) in 1859. The firm quickly gained recognition for its finely crafted silverware, particularly elaborate dressing table sets, vanity boxes, and pictorial repoussé work. As demand grew, Comyns expanded operations, acquiring additional premises on Beak Street and Regent Street. In 1885, his sons, Charles and Richard, joined the business, leading to its renaming as William Comyns & Sons. Comyns silverware was retailed by some of the worlds most prestigious firms, including Tiffany & Co., The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company, and leading London retailers such as Henry Lewis and Howell & James. Among its most distinctive creations were silver and tortoiseshell pieces featuring delicate piqué work, a technique of inlaying fine silver patterns into tortoiseshell. These, along with jewellery boxes, toiletry sets, clocks, and other objets dart, were crafted in ornate Victorian and flowing Art Nouveau styles, highly prized for their intricate designs and exceptional quality. Following William Comyns death in 1916, his sons navigated the challenges of World War I. After Charles passed away in 1925, the firm became a limited liability company under Richard Comyns. The firm survived through the interwar years and continued producing high-quality silverware. In 1953, Bernard Copping acquired the company, but it changed hands multiple times in the following decades. William Comyns & Sons eventually ceased trading and was formally liquidated in 1987. It‘s gold, it‘s beautiful. Boyd Tsosie is a jeweler who draws inspiration from the rich heritage of his Navajo traditions. Born in 1954, he has been making jewelry since he was sixteen years of age. In 1979, Boyd Tsosie was only 23. He was already among the top echelon of Southwestern jewelers / silversmiths (both past and present). Boyd was featured in Arizona Highways along with other greats like Jesse Monongye, his brother Richard Tsosie, Gibson Nez, James Little, and Larry Golsch. These Navajo silversmiths all would go on to build fine reputations and set the standards you see today for Southwest jewelry. Kenneth Begaye, a teacher at the Navajo Community College on the Navajo Reservation, inspired Boyd at a young age. Boyd gives credit to Kenneth for teaching him his trade. Kenneth Begay has been deemed the father of modern Navajo jewelry. Before Kenneth Begay, Navajo Indian Jewelry was much like it had been for the past 100 years. Navajo jewelry had a strong Spanish influence. Which is entirely understandable since it was a Mexican silversmith (who learned from the Spanish) that taught the first Navajo to work silver. Boyd considers Kenneth Begay a major influence and carries on today the work of Kenneth Begay. Boyd Tsosie continues to move Navajo jewelry forward and he, like Kenneth Begay, generously shares his knowledge with other silversmiths. Boyd, working with his brother Richard, first gained widespread recognition for his soldered flower and leaf designs. Later, he moved his jewelry designs to a more complex, contemporary look. Over the years Boyd has developed a contemporary style of work primarily in 14K gold combined with turquoise, coral, lapis, and sugilite. Boyd feels that he is creating “tomorrows tradition in Navajo jewelry by being given the rights and prayers by his elders to create his special pieces. He is featured in Navajo Indian Jewelry and Enduring Traditions by Jerry and Lois Jacka and North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment by Lois Dubin. William Waldo Dodge Westport Yacht Club hammered sterling silver creamer trophy. Weight and measurements in pictures, a zillion times nicer than the pictures suggest. William Waldo Dodge, Jr. (1895-1971), architect and craftsman, was one of the leading figures in Ashevilles architectural scene as well as an illustrious and well-known silversmith. He was part of an important larger movement in Asheville that expressed the influences of the romantic and Arts and Crafts movements in a variety of media from architecture to silver, pottery, weaving, and other arts. His personalized work attracted liberal patronage, even during the Great Depression, from clients who could still afford to build, and his buildings remain treasured expressions of his craftsmanly approach to architecture. Dodge was born in Washington, D. C. in 1895, the son of William W. and Margaret Parker Dodge. His father was a patent attorney who headed a successful family legal practice in the nations capital. William, Jr., attended the Friends School in Washington and then Philips-Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. He was sent to Princeton University to prepare for a career in law, but after a year decided that he did not want to be an attorney and enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study architecture. He was graduated from MIT with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1916. From Cambridge, with World War I looming, he went to Plattsburg, New York, and enrolled in officers training school. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and sent to France as a member of the American Expeditionary Force. Wounded in battle, he was awarded a Silver Star and Purple Heart. Exposure to chlorine gas during the war aggravated Dodges tubercular condition, and after the war, he was treated at the veterans hospital at Oteen near Asheville, North Carolina, a community long regarded as having a climate and surroundings beneficial to patients afflicted with lung diseases. This assignment brought Dodge to the Asheville area, where he spent most of the rest of his life. At Oteen he taught crafts to fellow patients and developed an interest in silver and copper smithing. After he was released from the hospital, Dodge moved to Connecticut and married Margaret Robinson, but a relapse forced him to enter Gaylord Tuberculosis Sanitorium. While he was convalescing there, the Dodges studied silversmithing. After his discharge, the couple moved to Asheville, where Dodge briefly taught physics and mechanical drawing at the Asheville Boys School. He opened a silversmith shop on Charlotte Street in Asheville and created over the years a unique and widely admired body of artistic silver work. Early in the 1920s, a prominent Asheville citizen asked Dodge to design a residence for him, and Dodge planned for him the lavish Tudor Revival style Hammond-Knowlton House (1925). Drawing upon his training at MIT, Dodd added architectural practice to his silversmiths craft. With Asheville in the midst of a boom period, he found abundant opportunities and in 1927 moved to a shop he designed and built in the new suburban community of Biltmore Forest, developed on a portion of the Biltmore Estate. An account of Dodges practice was published in the American Architect in November, 1928, illustrating his silverware, workshop, and studio, and describing him as “an architect by profession and a craftsman by avocation. In 1929 Dodge obtained a license to practice architecture in North Carolina, and he continued to attract or find commissions during the Great Depression. Blending English, French, and rustic elements already favored in the mountain city, where the mountain setting and the romantic (and French) aura of Biltmore exerted strong influences, Dodge rendered these themes in picturesque compositions enriched with handcrafted detailing that appealed to the wealthy residents of Asheville and Biltmore Forest. His own shop and other small buildingsincluding repurposed log cabins from the regiondisplay his intricately crafted details and rustic motifs on a modest scale, while larger houses such as the William A. Knight House II in Biltmore Forest combine brick, stucco, stone, and wood, and individually designed details of wood carvings, hinges, sculptures, and more to evoke the spirit of a French chateau. In 1942, facing the wartime hiatus in private construction, he and five other western North Carolina architects banded together to form the architectural firm of Six Associates to enable them to compete for defense contracts and other large projects. Although the firm continued and expanded after the war, in 1947 Dodge withdrew to resume his own practice, which he pursued until his retirement in 1956. His son William Waldo Dodge, III, followed him in the profession with a large practice in Raleigh. Note: A large collection entitled the William Waldo Dodge Architectural Drawings, 1916-1989 (MC 00372) was donated in 2010 to the Special Collections Research Center at NCSU Libraries. Although most of the drawings are from the firm of Dodge III, there are several by Dodge, Jr., especially from the post-World War II period. Huge 1940‘s Leo Poblano Zuni multi-stone inlay butterfly pin sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pics, all solid sterling. All stones/inlay secure in bezels with very old fracture to jet inlay in center at bottom inlaid turquoise. Circa mid 20th century, unmarked other than C.G. Wallace code on the reverse side. Attributed to Leo Poblano family. Very big pin, it would be a big belt buckle by most standards. The "Average" men‘s belt buckle is 3" wide, this is 3.5" wide. Leo Poblano (1905-1959) is considered one of the most renowned Zuni stoneworkers of the 20th century for his innovative and skillful designs. At a time when most Zuni jewelers worked with traditional themes and materials, Leo experimented and is thought to be one of the first Zuni inlay artists to use decorative elements in his carvings. After serving in the military in World War 2, Leo returned to Zuni Pueblo where he continued to make stone mosaic jewelry as well as work for the BIA as a wildlands firefighter. Because of his friendship with Zuni trader C.G. Wallace, Leo was able to work with the finest turquoise and other high quality stones for his pieces. Wallace would also assign Leos stone pieces to Navajo silversmiths for mounting on silver boxes, finger rings, pendants, and other adornments. Leos first wife, Daisy Hooee Nampeyo, studied at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and taught Leo many lapidary relief techniques which helped enhance his stone inlay pieces. Leos second wife, Ida Vacit, who was also an inlay artist, finished many of the pieces that Leo left behind after his abrupt death due to a tragic firefighting accident in 1959. Leos pieces, known for their attention to detail, impeccable technique, and innovative style are part of many notable collections including the Heard Museum and the Wheelwright Museum. He is succeeded by his daughter, Veronica Poblano, who is also an award winning Zuni artist.

He is known for making Hopi overlay jewelry since the 1970s.In 2008, Robert Lomadapki (1942-2015) was named an “Arizona Living Treasure for his dedicated work in education in the Native American community.  Not only was he a talented artist, he was an educator and a gallery owner who spent his time encouraging and promoting the careers of young artists.  He spent the last years of his life in the Applied Indigenous Studies department at Northern Arizona University as a traditional knowledge scholar.  He was also the owner and operator of Isvaki Gallery in downtown Flagstaff, Arizona.

I believe he is one of the few 20th century Native American artists to have done more work in gold than in silver. Even in the 70‘s he was working in gold, but most of the silver jewelry he made was in the 70‘s. So while this may not be more valuable than a similar gold bracelet, it is rarer. Andy Lee Kirk was a Master contemporary Native American artist of Isleta and Navajo heritage, who died tragically at the height of his career at the age of 54. He created beautiful gold and silver jewelry using the finest materials from 1970 to 2001. Born in 1947, he originally earned a degree in biology continuing on to work for the Fish and Wildlife and Forest Services. Andy had learned the basics of jewelry making at the University of New Mexico and with the urging of Navajo artist, Gibson Nez, he made the decision to become a full time jeweler. Andy Lee Kirk was a consummate artist with many fine skills. He did lapidary work, rolling his own beads, and had mastered many types of precious metalwork including lost wax and sand cast techniques, stamping, engraving, overlay and fabrication. His artistic innovation reached further than aesthetic beauty alone. His designs were brilliant a perfect balance between clean modern lines, meaningful symbolism, and bright southwestern colors such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, and red coral. He was the IACA Artist of the Year in 1996 and earned many other prestigious awards and accolades including First Place and Best of Division at Santa Fe Indian Market and Best of Category at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, NM.

Weight and measurements in pictures, marked as shown. Mid 20th century with appropriate wear. The system of trading posts in the arid southwest had an enormous impact on how the area was shaped, both economically and in the minds and imaginations of travelers to the area. One such post was established by Jack Michelson and his wife, Mildred, in 1932 in the growing city of Albuquerque. Mildreds maiden name was Bell, so the Michelsons chose the name Bell Trading Post for their business. The post was located along the new highway known as Route 66. Michelson hoped this spot would be a boon in establishing his business as a place where tourists could find locally made Native American jewelry. The beginning years were a struggle but the location did help the trading post hold on, particularly when Roosevelts New Deal created the CCC and truckers were hitting the roads to transport goods. Bell Trading Post was in the right location to sell them souvenirs for their family back home. Jobs were hard to come by then and many Native artisans were willing to make Jack Michelsons jewelry. But money was scarce as well so the Michelsons looked to earlier entrepreneurs like Fred Harvey for how to make their new business a success. They installed their own machines for making the jewelry and used copper and nickel more than silver and gold to create their pieces. In the initial years, the post marked its jewelry with the image of a bell. Over the years there would be other trademarks they used, such as an arrow with a bell sign hanging from it. Most of these trademarks included a bell in some part of the design. Due to the fact that he had little competition, Jack Michelson decided against paying the cost to file these initial trademarks used during the 1930s. The years during WWII saw the business boom. The southwest was designated as a military training area and there were many soldiers far from home looking for gifts to send back to their families. Bell Trading Post expanded its business and began to sell their products wholesale to other tourist shops. With the death of Jack in 1957, the business of Bell Trading Post passed to his children, Jack, Douglas and Jacquelyn. The change ushered in a new era for the company. The siblings opted to file their first trademark, and to expand their product line. In 1969, they formed Sunbell, a corporation which oversaw their new product lines such as Oglala Lakota moccasins and copperware as well as their jewelry. Sunbell remained in business until the late 1980s.
