Emerson Bill has a technique all his own. His bracelets and buckles are done in overlay technique; a base layer of sheet silver with an overlaid layer from which the design is cut and then soldered to the base layer.

Where his technique differs is in his manner of creating the overlaid layer. In Hopi overlay jewelry the design is cut away from the top layer of sheet silver with a jeweler's jigsaw. In Emerson's technique the top layer's design is sculpted with a cold chisel. This allows him to get beveled edges and cut out angles that couldn't be achieved with a saw.

At first glance his work appears to be very deep stampwork, but stamps won't cut that deep. The visual effect he seeks is characterized by dramatic relief and bold designs. As a result, his cuffs are extremely thick and absolutely indestructible.

Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. 7" Greg Lewis Acoma Carico lake turquoise repousse silver cuff bracelet.

Greg Lewis is a silversmith who excels at creating fine American Indian jewelry in the traditional style. Often, when looking at his work, you could almost swear that it is actually a historic piece. This is because Greg is at least the 3rd generation of jewelers carrying on the time-honored traditions and techniques that have been handed down through his family.

Greg Lewis began working with silver when he was just 15 by studying with his paternal grandfather, Alvin Concho Lewis of Acoma. So much influence comes from Greg’s grandfather including his Arrowhead hallmark, which Alvin first established in 1922. It is said that this arrowhead hallmark came to Greg’s grandfather from a birthmark on his right leg that had a similar shape.

Like his grandfather before him, almost everything that Greg Lewis does is by hand including most of his tools, which he creates out of old files and tool steel bar. All of his stamps are handmade too – either by Greg or passed down from his grandfather. Even the fine natural turquoise that Greg Lewis often sets in jewelry is hand-cut and hand-set. In fact, only Greg's torch and buffing wheel are modern – a true testament to the level of workmanship in every unique piece that Greg Lewis makes. Consider, if you will, this silver frog box by Greg Lewis. The entire box is made by hand from the heavily stamped bezel that holds the Teddie Weahkee frog fetish to the hinges that open perfectly to the 12 repousse flowers that adorn the surface to the four silver tadpoles that are carefully shaped and appliqued onto the box. No detail has been left untouched. This is the kind of quality that we’ve come to expect only from the old masters, and it is refreshing to see it continuing today.

Greg Lewis and Dyaami Lewis
Greg Lewis and his son, Dyaami
It is a painstaking and time-consuming process, but the end result is an exquisite legacy to the silversmiths that came before Greg Lewis.

Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. I believe the previous owner paid $9500 for this bracelet about 25-30 years ago. High grade Godber is expensive. History of Godber-Burnham Turquoise The Godber mine, discovered in 1932, is located east of Austin, Nevada. First claimed under the name “Last Chance, it was later sold to Frank Burnham and then in 1934 to Walter Godber. It is said that during his short time owning the mine, he pulled out over "100,000" worth of turquoise, before selling it to Godber. Godber turquoise has been featured in the movie "The 10 Commandments" in the 50s, and was sold in Tiffany stores. The Godber mine was mined underground for the majority of its early years. Due to the miners chasing veins underground, you never know when you will run into an underground working where the turquoise has already been mined. The turquoise ranges from medium to dark blue, usually with a beautiful spider webbing. It has also been know for a very dark or black mottling forming, blotches and veins running through the stone. This mottling forms blotches and veins running through the stone that creates a impressive spiderweb appearance. Oscar Branson in his book, “Turquoise has called Godber ‘so hard and ‘some of the finest turquoise in Nevada‘. Godber has always been considered a very high quality turquoise and very collectible.

Jared Chavez Santo Domingo modernist sterling Link bracelet. 7" long x 1 1/6" wide x 75.1 grams. Does have a scratched signature JJC-00 on reverse side. Jared J. ChavezI began my journey as an artist learning to craft jewelry from my father, Richard I Chavez, a renowned lapidary artist. I was not given exact direction as to what to make but was only given the tools and instruction on how to use them. Along the way my work would be critiqued by my father and I would continually strive to evolve my designs and fabrication processes. He stressed the quality of the design and construction making sure that every aspect of a piece looked “finished” and no corners were cut. Along with all that I learned in my father’s studio, I would receive a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University in Studio Arts with a focus in Digital Art and Printmaking. After I graduated, I would attend The Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts’, Intensive Bench Jeweler Program in San Francisco. Each of these educational experiences added a particular technical or visual aspect to my work and would encourage me to continue to explore all the ways I could enhance my designs. My current work focuses on the reflective nature of polished silver. Though fabrication, metal stamping, and some casting, I explore how light and reflection interacts with the materials I utilize. I’ve found that polished silver takes in the colors and the light of the world around, and through the use of surface texture a dynamic play of light is created across the surface of my designs. I further enhance my work thought the use of semi-precious stones (agates, quartzs, jades, etc.). However one of the most important qualities in my selection of stones is often translucency. I’ve found that by allowing light to shine though a stone an overall rich and warm effect is created in the overall design. Along with my yearly schedule of shows where I sell my designs, I’ve also made it a point to educate the public about my work. Growing up in my father’s studio, I always saw just how much of himself he put into his designs and how sometimes he was met with disbelief as to how much work was put into his pieces. I found this to be a similar case when I entered the business, as the general public only sees the finished piece. For that reason, though in person demonstrations and self-produced video mini-documentaries, we’ve made it a point to show the skill, time, and passion that goes into every design. I continually strive to evolve my work and hold every design to the exacting standards that my father established when he created Chavez Studio 50 years ago.All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. 7" Kirk Smith Navajo heavy stamped sterling silver stacker cuff bracelet. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Fits up to a 7" wrist. HIS LIFE: Kirk Smith first began working with silver at around age 7 in his grandfather’s hidden workshop, that according to Smith’s interview with Perry Null Trading, “you would not see it unless you knew it was there”. His grandfather also made jewelry and Kirk used to aid him by first learning to run the bellow to heat the charcoal that would allow his grandfather to work with the silver at high temperatures, and then eventually began to work with beads and bracelets and necklaces himself. He later used these primitive skills to craft jewelry for his uncle, who would exchange clothes and shoes for his pieces. In 1972, Kirk struck out on his own, primarily working in silver cast work, until the price of silver went up in 1974 and he went to work doing different things like working in the mine or a refinery in Galveston. He returned to jewelry making in the early 1980s when his mother got sick and he desired to be nearer to her. That’s when his craft took a turn. HIS MENTORS: Of course, his grandfather was his earliest influence, and perhaps the most profound on Kirk as a person, but when it comes to his craftsmanship, the game-changer for him was his brother-in-law. Kirk’s sister was married to an artisan named Harry Morgan, a well-known name in the world of Native American jewelry. Harry was known for his intricate stamp work and the way he would style his silver to give it an antique look, believing that overly polished silver hid the detailing and the beauty of a piece. It was Harry who really taught Kirk about design and style in terms of his craft. HIS CRAFT: Kirk is probably best known for his concho belts, like the one we found in Audrey’s closet, that we thought was too beautiful not to share with y’all after being tucked away for too long. He was known for his unrelenting insistence on working his silver by hand, resulting in beautiful pieces of heavy silver and high-grade stones. In addition to concho belts, Kirk crafted gorgeous statement cuff bracelets with turquoise and red coral and some of the most striking blue lapis you’ve ever seen, as well as some rings, pendants, earrings, and even a few squash blossoms. As we mentioned, his work is highly collectible, not only because of its stunning beauty, but because sadly, there won’t be any more made; Kirk was tragically killed in 2012. HIS DEATH: On September 17, 2012, Kirk was in an altercation in a parking lot with a young man whose truck had struck Kirk’s vehicle as the man was attempting to back into a parking spot. When the driver, who was intoxicated, tried to flee the scene, Kirk jumped onto the hood of the man’s truck. When he was eventually unable to maintain his grip, Kirk was flung from the moving vehicle and suffered injuries which resulted in his death in an Albuquerque hospital a little while later. The driver did succeed in fleeing the scene, but eventually collided with another truck and a barrier on Interstate 25 and was apprehended after a violent struggle with police; he was found to have had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16, twice the legal limit. Incredibly, the driver, who was 16 at the time, was only sentenced to 90 days in a treatment center and two years probation. As you might imagine, Kirk’s surviving family does not feel that justice was done in the wake of his death, but they are carrying on his legacy in a positive way despite the circumstances.
