c1940 Rumrill Art Pottery Vase and Candle holder with unusual sponged green matte glaze. Vase is 6" tall x 6.5" wide at the rim. No damage or restorations to either of the pieces, candle holders are unmarked but from the same estate and obviously match. Selling the set shown. George Rumrill, a Little Rock, Arkansas native, was a founder of the Arkansas Products Company. The Arkansas Products Company was formed to promote Arkansas made products. Two of the products that were promoted were Niloak Pottery from Benton and Camark Pottery from Camden. George Rumrill's position as a founder and promoter of the Arkansas Products Company gave him access to many of the two pottery's catalogs and products. At some point in time, the Arkansas Products Company came to pass and George Rumrill decided to create his own pottery company. Since he had no facilities in which to make pottery, he contacted existing pottery companies to create his line of pottery. RumRill's most popular designs were made by Red Wing Stoneware Company from 1933-1936 and Red Wing Potteries from 1936-1938. Shawnee produced RumRill Pottery in 1938 for a short time. Then Florence and Gonder potteries produced RumRill until his death in 1942. George Rumrill created many of his own designs. It is interesting to note, however, that there are a number of RumRill pieces that are known Camark shapes. With George Rumrill's access to the Camark catalogs and products, this should be no surprise. There are also RumRill pieces that were made from Red Wing molds. Some of RumRill's designs were produced throughout RumRill's existence by all of the contracting pottery companies.

She produced some of the most ornate jewelry that was being produced in Mexico back in the day..The inspirations she fell back on were inspired from the Mixtec people of Monte Alban, Oaxaca area. Each designer during the Mexican Silver Renaissance days had their own unique style,but it was Matilde,who brought the beautiful motifs of doves, flowers, and tiny bells that are reminiscent of the whimsical subjects of contemporary Mexican folk art...The beauty of her metal work,was so time consuming & was considered Baroque in style with a undeniably "Mexican"look.. As a young cowboy and blacksmith, Oscar learned the art of spurmaking from his brother Arthur. 1887 - Oscar was born into a family of true Cowboys in Pecos, TX. 1914 - His cowboy trails lead him to the Stockyards of Kansas City, MO. Oscar partnered with George Gliem and formed C & G Bits and Spurs. The partnership was later sold to C. P. Shipley with Oscar as manager. 1916 - Oscar moved to Pawhuska, OK and continued mastering his spurmaking skills from his own shop till joining the First War. 1917 - 1918 - Oscar was stationed at the Shipyards of Bremerton, WA where his metalworking skills benefited WW1 to victory. 1919 - Oscar and Arthur returned to Kansas City, MO after the War and worked for C. P. Shipley Saddlery and Merchantile Company, in the Bit and Spur Department. Oscar married Bessie Gove. 1920 - Oscar and Arthur along with their Uncle W. c1940‘s Dan Simplicio Zuni Lone Mountain turquoise silver ranger belt buckle set. 3/4" ranger set, unmarked, attributed to Dan Simplicio, likely from the second quarter of the 20th century. The belt fits a 38-41" waist with existing holes. The belt is signed Fred Harvey, which is really cool and likely really rare and possibly collectible in it‘s own right. The belt is old but liikely has some life left in it if cared for. I don‘t really feel like I‘m charging a premium for the leather belt as this ranger set is rare and important, especially with this high grade turquoise which is most likely Lone Mountain. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallaces trading post and collaborated with amazing Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie. Throughout his time, he developed an inapt ability to create stunning leaf motifs with intricate stamps and carved details, beginning his signature balance of delicate leaf work and heavy turquoise and coral designs.

Weight and measurements in pics. David Taliman (1902-1967), was born near Ganado, Arizona in the eastern part of the Navajo Reservation of a Navajo father and a Cochiti Pueblo mother. He subsequently attended Riverside Indian School in southern California after which he began his silversmithing career as an apprentice to the extraordinary Navajo silversmith, Fred Peshlakai, son of Slender-Maker-of-Silver and one of the true giants in the history of Navajo silversmithing, at Peshlakais shop in nearby Los Angeles in the 1920s. Taliman subsequently moved to New Mexico in the late 1920‘s where he worked as a benchsmith in various prominent Indian trading post shops such as Maisels in Albuquerque, Spanish and Indian Trading in Santa Fe and Julius Gans Southwest Arts and Crafts also in Santa Fe where he worked alongside such Navajo silversmithing luminaries as Mark Chee and Ambrose and Sam Roanhorse before going on his own in the late 1940s. In 1953, after marrying a Santa Clara Pueblo woman, Taliman moved to Santa Clara Pueblo 30 miles or so north of Santa Fe where he continued making silver and also taught silversmithing until his death in 1967.

This pin is actually significantly different to most pins attributed to Horace Iule, I have found a pin online in the sold section of a Saks Gallery in Denver, CO that I believe was made by the same hand perhaps at the same time. They attributed it to Eskiose, which is one of the most important historic Navajo Silversmiths, more often referred to as Etsitty Tsosie They dated it to c1930.. I‘m not sure. I‘m guaranteeing it to be solid silver, turquoise, mid 20th century perhaps a little older, and Native American made.

Matilde Eugenia Poulat introduced MATL in 1934 and, since her death in 1960, her designs and techniques have been carried on by her nephew, Ricardo Salas. For sr. Salas, who can recite poetry in the language of the Aztecs, the mark matl, has greater meaning in its reference to the Nahuatl or Aztec word for water, atl.As a young woman, Matilde Poulat studied painting at the prestigious San Carlos academy of fine arts in Mexico city, she went on to teach painting classes at an art school until her interest turned exclusively to silver. Matilde Poulat´s designs for jewelry and figures were part of the new cultural vision among Mexico’s intellectuals after the revolution in 1920s, artists were searching for Mexican aesthetic, rejection European subjects in favor of the art of the pre-conquest Indians and of the Mexican pueblos. Sra. Poulat found inspiration in the mextec gold jewelry discovered in 1932 at Monte Alban. Her choice of motifs the dove, flowers, and tiny bells are reminiscent of the whimsical subjects of contemporary Mexican folk art.Matilde Poulat received international recognition for her jewelry when she was asked in 1941 to participate in an exhibit of Latin American silver at the pan American union in Washington, D.C. as a result of increasing demand for matl silver during world war ii , the number of silversmiths in the taller increased to thirty-three. In 1950, Srta. Poulat and her nephew opened a showroom on the first floor of her home, where she also had the workshop. Ricardo Salas recalls that they made three thousand types of silver jewelry and one hundred different pieces.Ricardo Salas worked closely with his aunt from the time he was eleven years of age. He says she recognized his artistic talent when she saw him do a play with puppets he had made himself. Sr. Salas was sent to the San Carlos academy, where he received the premio Diego Rivera. As a youth, he learned the techniques of the silversmith and perfected the carving of "Off White", coral, turquoise, and other stones used in the jewelry and figurines. From sr. Salas perspective, he and his aunt collaborated so closely as designers, that there really cannot be a comparison of their work.In 1955, William Spratling wrote of Matilde Poulat: “she has continued to produce some of the most charming native jewelry in Mexico, intensely her own. Her jewelry has the same charm and delightful surface and colorful quality of the old lacquer work of Uruapan. This mutual inspiration led each of the two artists in different directions within the same medium.
