  • 1953 Rolex Oyster Shock Resisting watch w/box - Estate Fresh Austin

1953 Rolex Oyster Shock Resisting watch w/box

    1 in stock

1953 Rolex Oyster Shock Resisting watch w/box. Very clean, working automatic Rolex c1953. The serial number places it at 1953 or 1963, but the Brevet + on the side above the 6282 model number was only used until the late 50's. Seiko replacement band. Original Authetic Rolex, I acquired it with this box from a friend. It was his Grandfather's, I don't know enough to be 100% sure if this is the original box, there is no inner box, just what's shown. Case approx 33-34mm wide without the crown. Still has what I assume to be the original protective clear plastic sticker on the back of the watch.

Last purchased 10-15 years ago for 2k from Goodwill Ecommerce, in the last few years several of these have brought right around 3k and some more at auction. Tyrus Raymond Cobb Born: December 18, 1886 Georgia Died: July 17, 1961 (aged 74) Atlanta Georgia Awards And Honors: Baseball Hall of Fame (1936) Most Valuable Player (1911) Baseball Hall of Fame (inducted 1936. Triple Crown 1x MVP 12x batting champion Ty Cobb, in full Tyrus Raymond Cobb, byname the Georgia Peach, (born December 18, 1886, Narrows, Georgia, U.S.—died July 17, 1961, Atlanta, Georgia), professional baseball player, considered one of the greatest offensive players in baseball history and generally regarded as the fiercest competitor in the game. Cobb took to baseball early in his life: by age 14 he was playing alongside adults on the local baseball team in Royston, Georgia. In 1904 he joined a semiprofessional team in Anniston, Alabama, and the following year he signed with the minor league Augusta (Georgia) Tourists. While playing with the Tourists, Cobb had his personal life jolted by an unusual tragedy: on August 8, 1905, his mother shot and killed his father, who was atop the family’s porch roof in an attempt to catch her being unfaithful and whom she purportedly mistook for a burglar. That event overshadowed his promotion to the Detroit Tigers later that month. His combative reaction to his subsequent rookie hazing created animosity between Cobb and his teammates that lasted for years, which greatly helped to establish the antagonistic public persona that would become one of Cobb’s hallmarks. He spent 22 seasons as an outfielder with the Tigers (1905–26) and also managed the team from 1921 through 1926. Cobb led the team to three consecutive American League (AL) pennants (1907–09), but the Tigers lost all three World Series in which he appeared. A member of the Philadelphia Athletics when he retired in 1928, Cobb hit .323 in his last season, at age 41. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed, stood about 6 feet 1 inch (1.9 metres), and weighed 175 pounds (79.4 kg). During his 24-season career in the AL, Cobb established numerous batting records. His career hits record of 4,189 lasted until it was broken by Pete Rose in 1985. He also set the runs-scored mark of 2,246, a total that was not surpassed until 2001 by Rickey Henderson. Cobb’s total of 892 stolen bases was surpassed in 1979 by Lou Brock. Finally, Cobb’s lifetime batting average of .366 was unequaled through the 20th century. (It should be noted that there is disagreement among sports statisticians as to the exact figure for Cobb’s batting statistics.) Cobb led the AL in batting 12 times. Three times his batting average topped .400 (1911, .420; 1912, .409; and 1922, .401), and for 23 straight years he batted at least .300. In the first election to the Baseball Hall of Fame, in 1936, Cobb received the most votes. He invested his baseball earnings shrewdly and amassed a comfortable fortune. Cobb’s historic baseball accomplishments are occasionally overshadowed by his notorious personality. Known for sharpening his spikes in order to cause the most damage to opponents’ legs when sliding, he was one of the most aggressive players in baseball history, and his short temper led to numerous on-field scuffles (he even attacked a heckling fan in the stands on one occasion). His autobiography, My Life in Baseball, ghostwritten by sportswriter Al Stump, was published in 1961. Stump amended the record in 1994 with Cobb: A Biography, which presents a far more honest view of the great player. Cobb’s racism, misogyny, and volatile and violent personality are covered in Stump’s second book, which was the basis of a 1994 film, Cobb.

I would bet my life this signature is Authentic because of<br>where I got it from. This estate was full of books that were given by the<br>Authors to members of this family.<br><br>These books and many more I'll be listing shortly are from the estate of Homer<br>Garrison III, the son of Homer Garrison Jr.<br><br>GARRISON, HOMER, JR. (1901-1968). Homer Garrison, Jr., Texas Ranger chief and<br>director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, son of Homer and Mattie<br>(Milam) Garrison, was born in Kickapoo, Anderson County, Texas, on July 21,<br>1901, the eldest of nine children. After graduation from Lufkin High School he<br>went to work in the office of his father, who was district clerk in Angelina<br>County. Garrison received his first experience as a law officer at nineteen,<br>when was appointed a deputy sheriff of Angelina County. In 1929 he became a<br>state license and weight inspector for the Texas Highway Department, and he<br>joined the Texas Highway Patrol when it was organized in 1930.<br><br>When the Department of Public Safety was founded in August 1935 Garrison became<br>the first assistant director. Among his initial duties was the task of<br>developing a training program for DPS officers. At the request of the governor<br>of New Mexico, he was sent to that state to help organize the New Mexico State<br>Police. During World War II he was offered an appointment by Gen. Douglas<br>MacArthur to reorganize and supervise the Japanese national police system for<br>the War Department, but he declined in deference to his duties as director of<br>the DPS and chief of the Texas Rangers.<br><br>Among the many honors bestowed upon him during the nearly thirty years he served<br>as the head of the state law-enforcement agency was the presentation of the<br>sixth Paul Gray Hoffman Award, conferred annually by the Automotive Safety<br>Foundation for distinguished service in highway safety. In 1963 Governor John<br>Connally appointed Garrison director of civil defense and disaster relief for<br>the state of Texas and chairman of the State Defense Council. The same year the<br>governor also named him director of the Governor's Highway Safety Commission. In<br>May 1966 he was elected chairman of the resolutions committee and a member of<br>the steering committee of the Southern Region Highway Policy Committee of the<br>Council of State Governments; in January 1967 he was named a member of the<br>National Motor Vehicle Safety Advisory Council.<br><br>Colonel Garrison became director of the Department of Public Safety and chief of<br>the Texas Rangers in 1938. Under his leadership numerous major programs were<br>developed, and the organization grew to a total of some 3,400 employees. The<br>programs included crime control, police traffic supervision, driver licensing,<br>vehicle inspection, safety responsibility, accident records, safety education,<br>defense and disaster service, and police training.<br><br>Garrison married Mary Nell Kilgo on June 1, 1939, and they had one son. Garrison<br>died on May 7, 1968, and was buried in the State Cemetery, Austin. A Texas<br>Ranger museum at Fort Fisher was named for him.<br><br>BIBLIOGRAPHY: Ben Procter, "The Texas Rangers: An Overview," in The Texas<br>Heritage, ed. Ben Procter and Archie P. McDonald (St. Louis: Forum, 1980).<br>Vertical Files, Barker Texas History Center, University of Texas at Austin.<br>Bill Carter<br><br>"GARRISON, HOMER JR." The Handbook of Texas Online. [Accessed Wed Aug 7 11:36:57<br>US/Central 2002].<br><br><br>Mary Starr Barkley<br><br>was a life-long resident of Austin whose penchant for local history led her to<br>write numerous colorful books, articles, and essays about her hometown and<br>Central Texas. Known to friends and colleagues as "Mamie", she liked to refer to<br>herself as a "housewife-historian".<br><br>Barkley's roots in Austin extended back four generations. She was born in 1907<br>to James Patrick Starr and Mary Ellen Dolan Starr (Nellie), devout Irish<br>Catholics who belonged to St. Mary's Parish in Austin. Mary attended St. Mary's<br>Cathedral School until her graduation in 1923. Her close ties to the Catholic<br>Church greatly influenced both her historical research and her charitable<br>activities throughout the rest of her life.<br><br>Mary attended the University of Texas for two years and then went to work for<br>Austin National Bank where she met her future husband, Fred C. Barkley. The two<br>were married in 1930. During World War II, when Fred was in service, Mary began<br>to write fiction and essays. One of her favorite personal anecdotes concerns the<br>time in 1946 that she sent out three articles and received a check for each one.<br>"After that", she said, "I could never quit writing." She regularly sold<br>stories, essays and articles to magazines such as The Cattleman, Farm and Ranch,<br>Catholic Digest, the Houston Chronicle Sunday Magazine, and the Atlanta Journal<br>Magazine .<br><br>Mary Starr Barkley wrote predominantly about Austin and the surrounding<br>communities. She liked to set out at about nine o'clock in the morning one day<br>each week and drive to communities within a fifty mile radius of Austin. She<br>conducted a substantial amount of her research through oral interviews and<br>enjoyed talking to "old timers" who could tell her all about the history of<br>their communities. Barkley's method of history writing was to weave human<br>interest stories into traditional date-oriented narratives; she called this<br>style her "trademark". Barkley also carried a camera with her during her travels<br>and took many of the pictures that accompanied her articles.<br><br>In addition to her work as an amateur historian, Barkley was involved in several<br>organizations, many of which were affiliated with the Catholic Church. In 1950,<br>she helped organize the Seton Hospital Auxiliary to which she ultimately gave<br>over 17,000 hours of her time during a 30-year period. In 1950, Barkley also<br>helped organize the Friends of the Adoration Convent, a group that served as<br>both the auxiliary and the fundraising arm of the Austin Adoration Convent. In<br>her later years, she served as the Chair of the Travis County Historical Survey<br>Committee, an organization dedicated to the preservation of the historical<br>buildings within Travis County.<br><br>Barkley was the author of several published works including: Fifty Years of the<br>Seton Hospital (1952), O ne Hundred Years: The History of St. Mary's Cathedral<br>(1952), The History of Travis County and Austin, 1839-1899 (1963), A History of<br>Central Texas (1970), St. Mary's Church (now a Cathedral) (1972), The History of<br>St. Mary's Cathedral, 1874-1974 (1974), and numerous essays and articles<br>published in local and national periodicals. She also wrote a book on the<br>history of the Austin National Bank, and tried her hand at fiction. In addition<br>to her activities as a writer, Barkley conducted extensive genealogical research<br>about her own family and composed an unpublished family history, "A Four Staff<br>Family".<br><br>Principle organizations Barkley belonged to include: Seton Hospital Auxiliary,<br>the Travis County Historical Survey Committee, the Adoration Convent, Austin<br>National Bank, and St. Mary's Cathedral Parish.<br><br>Mary Starr Barkley succumbed to cancer in 1981.

This is a style that was later adopted by Alice Quam‘s daughter Alvina Quam, though not in gold that I know of. I have seen a few Alice Quam pieces in gold, but not that many even though when she was active gold was 1/7 to 1/130 of the current price. Yes you read that correctly, during much of the time she was active gold was .7% of it‘s current price. The average was probably 1/20 current price. Still gold items by her are extremely rare and were likely custom items as it was always more expensive than silver and not as popular with top Native American artists as it is today. Alice Quam was definitely a top Zuni artist At the time of listing this melts for $8800 just counting the whole thing as gold. The stones are quality American turquoise which would of course be sold by the carat even if they were not carved by Alice Quam or possibly her daughter working under her. The stones are worth more than gold, the swivel on the back can‘t be that heavy. These days you hear a lot of people saying "NOT SCRAP" when referring to machine made gold jewelry, which is ridiculous to me as it‘s all scrap in my eyes. This is Historic Zuni jewelry that would improve the quality of any collection/wardrobe, it‘s not scrap, never will be. But really isn‘t priced at a ridiculous amount over scrap. Alice Quam (1929-2003), Zuni Pueblo Jeweler Zuni Pueblo artist Alice Quam was active 1930s - 2003. She was known for cluster jewelry. For over 50 years, collectors looking for the best cluster jewelry have beaten a path to the home of Alice Quam. Alice selects only the best natural turquoise and coral. Her stones are shaped to perfection. Alice‘s settings are clean and precise, often with twist wire and silver balls. She was the daughter of Doris and Wayne Ondelacy; wife of Duane Quam; mother of Alvina Quam, Lorraine Waatsa, Shirley Quam, Wayne Quam and Elgin Quam.

1970's Justin Morris Navajo Sterling Turquoise and coral pendant/necklace. 24"<br>necklace, 3" x 2.25" pendant all with no issues. 74.8 grams total.<br><br>Silversmiths Justin and Irene Morris began making jewelry over 50 years ago. At<br>that particular time in American History many Native Americans were turning to<br>art to bring in extra income to support their families (particularly those<br>without college educations); he got the idea from his Grandpa Bitchittti. Not<br>surprisingly, Grandpa proved to be right. In the mid sixties, Southwestern<br>Indian jewelry started to make its way into mainstream America, finding its way<br>across Sacs of Fifth Avenue Catalogs to featured articles in Arizona Highways.<br>Before Justin decided to take up silver, he was a instructional aide for the<br>Government at Dilcon Boarding School. Morris recalls Grandpa looking out for the<br>livelihood of the family and notes, "the idea (for me to become a silversmith)<br>was all Grandpa's...the learning (however) was all self-taught."<br><br>Over the next few years, Morris began to learn and refine the skilled trait of<br>not only fabricating jewelry from sheets of silver and turquoise but also<br>learned the art of marketing. He managed to establish--over the course of 50<br>years--a clientele that spanned from as close as Sedona, Arizona to as far away<br>as Frankfort, Germany. Also over the next few years would come Justin and<br>Irene's children, Charles, Luskey, Calamity, and Keturah who would also take up<br>silversmithing. Today, the business is a family affair and Justin accredits his<br>success to his children's participation in the business and the support of his<br>wife Irene, "(Everyone) They all helped out in the shop, (the children) ever<br>since they were small...working together has brought us closer together." And<br>from the looks of it has kept them together as well.<br><br>Being in the business for over 50 years hasn't however been without its hard<br>times. The Morrises, for business proposes, decided rather than continue to<br>wholesale to retailers to take the business directly to his customers through a<br>market place venue. In the early 90's Justin and his family decided to start to<br>explore these markets. The bonus of exploring markets provided the Morrises with<br>the opportunity that they very rarely had--to meet collectors of his jewelry.<br>These markets also allowed the Morris name to take their business to a wider<br>range of customers, enabling them to hone business according to their customer's<br>needs.<br><br>Over the past years Morris has been able to instinctively, wield his business<br>according to seasons and market places which at times--the family unanimously<br>have admitted--have been a hard study. Surprisingly, the heard times, the<br>Morrises admit, are what measure the high points, which for them were building<br>the family business name. And even in the dreariest of times, which Morrises<br>have confessed their share, they comment, "you keep your mind on the Creator,<br>and keep laughter close." The both of which have propelled his business forward<br>in to the unknown. Today they, the Morrises, together, continue to forge into<br>unknowable.

1970's Licio Zanetti Murano Art Glass Ducks. Nice large almost life sized ducks<br>extremely heavy. I'm sure they are both signed but one had this label on the<br>base as most items in the estate did stating where they bough them and what they<br>paid for them. It has likely protected the base from scratches all these years.<br>I removed the corners just to show it wasn't chipped under the label. I felt<br>leaving it to help establish provenance was appropriate. They both measure 12.5"<br>x 13" long varying slightly as they were handmade about 50 years ago. Selling<br>both with no chips, cracks, or restorations, no scratches on top, some expected<br>shelf wear on base.<br><br>Founded in 1956, the Zanetti Vetreria Artistica by glassmaster Oscar Zanetti and<br>his son Licio. In 1989 master Licio Zanetti stepped down in favor of his son<br>Oscar (named after his grandfather), who had been working by his side since his<br>youth. Licio's work shows a predilection for naturalistic subjects is reflected<br>in a lively collection inspired by the flora and fauna of his beloved Venetian<br>Lagoon.<br><br>isshlf
