Felicita was a potter and silversmith.<br><br>Felicita was born in 1927 and raised at Cochiti Pueblo. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said.<br><br>The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.<br><br>Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. Willie Yazzie, Sr. (Navajo), 1928-1999 Overlay silver pins (2) Largest 2", 18.9 grams total weight. <br><br>Navajo Overlay Artist Willie Yazzie<br><br>After the success of the overlay designs made at the Hopi Guild many other<br>silversmiths and shops incorporated overlay in their designs (see Overlay is Not<br>Always Hopi Made). Navajo trader Dean Kirk opened his own trading post at<br>Manuelito, New Mexico (between Gallup and the Arizona border) by January 1941.<br>The silver work made in Dean’s shop was typically Navajo tourist type designs<br>and hallmarked UITA22 (under the auspices of the United Indian Traders<br>Association) until about 1951. That’s when Kirk designed a series of overlay<br>pins to be made by Navajo smiths in his employ incorporating Hohokam and Mimbres<br>designs. These designs proved to be very popular, as a 1958 newspaper<br>advertisement for Enchanted Mesa in Albuquerque promoted “Dean Kirk’s Navajo<br>Overlay Silver”. The overlay pieces made at Kirk’s shop were rarely hallmarked.<br><br>However, one of the Navajo silversmiths who worked for Dean Kirk was Willie<br>Yazzie, he made his own hallmark and used it on pieces he made in Kirk’s shop.<br><br>Much of the following information was relayed to Alan Ferg (archivist and<br>archaeologist at Arizona State Museum) by William P. (Willie) Yazzie, Jr, in<br>February 2018. Ferg’s investigation of an overlay belt buckle in his possession,<br>lacking a hallmark, has led to previously unrecorded information about Willie<br>Yazzie, as well as the identification of an additional hallmark used by the<br>artist.<br><br>According to Social Security records, Willie A. Yazzie was born at Chinle,<br>Arizona in 1928. His son says he learned silverwork at Dean Kirk’s trading post<br>in Manuelito in the early 1950s, and created his touchmark (or hallmark) no<br>later than 1960, and after that time his pieces made at Dean Kirk’s would have<br>included his gourd dipper hallmark. Willie worked at Mesa Verde<br>in the summers from 1960 to 1983, except for 1965 when he was sick. Yazzie<br>created a special hallmark to denote pieces he made at Mesa Verde. The mark<br>depicts Square Tower House, a ruin within the park, and was included with his<br>gourd dipper mark during the summers of 1960-1964 and 1966-1983.<br><br>Willie A. Yazzie died in 1999, but his family, including his widow, daughter and<br>Willie Jr continue the tradition of Willie’s overlay work. Willie Jr said that<br>his sister has most of their father’s tools and stamps, and that she still uses<br>the gourd dipper mark. Super clean with no detectable damage or wear inside or out. I don't believe it has ever been worn. Hallmarked by artist twice in interior, hallmarked 14k 3 times in interior.  This bracelet it composed of 14k gold, Gem Silica, Natural Australian Opal, Carnelian, Chalcedony, and Lapis Lazuli.   Duane Maktima was studying education at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, when a dean suggested he switch his major to art. “ I thought it would be a hobby.” Growing up in tiny towns in Arizona under the tutelage of his Hopi and Laguna relatives, Maktima learned how to carve and paint, but these artworks were referred to as “blessings” and not art. The Dean, having seen Duane’s work was insistent. When Maktima first laid eyes on the jewelry in the jewelry lab, he says, “It was like my whole life flashed before my eyes, I was hooked.” It took a decade for Maktima to complete his degree. He left college to work as a resident artist at the nearby Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. At only 19 years old he was given a studio and stipend to make jewelry which was snapped up by visitors from around the world.  Eventually he embarked on a personal retreat from the pressure and spent 3 years at Laguna Pueblo. Maktima worked there as a survey helper and everyday he walked the country from Second Mesa to Black Mesa.  During these long walks he came to deeply appreciate his heritage and decided to complete his education. When he did return to university, it was an exciting time for Native American artists. His research into African and Indian art led him create spiritual based  pieces from beads, shell work mosaics, motifs from Hopi pottery, hollow silver tubes, gold , lapis, turquoise , and red coral. In 1982, Maktima,  received a second-ever fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts. He moved to Sante Fe a year later. An active community leader,  he has influenced many young people to pursue a career in art.  His brooches, buckles, and other exquisite jewelry have been featured in some of the best Native American galleries. In 1990, Northern Arizona University honored the artist with its 2000 Distinguished Alumni Artist Award, Distinguished Achievement Award, and member of the President’s Circle. Maktima credits his achievements to his education and his family. “I can hear grandpa saying, ‘You have really learned something. You’ve really excelled with what God gave you.’ ” According to his grandfather, the name “Maktima” means “searching for eagles.”

Nelson Garcia is a very competent silversmith that uses the best materials and does extremely clean/high end work as is hopefully evident here. <br><br>Nelson Garcia was born October sixth, 1955 in the village of Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico. He was raised in a large family made up of four brothers and four sisters. One of the eldest, he matured early and with a good heart, shared in the responsibilities of his youth. From working in the fields with his brothers or watching the trade of his father, the seeds of perfection were sown.<br><br>His father, Joe Jay Garcia, was a silversmith with talents in traditional designs and Heishi necklaces. From studying his fathers workmanship more than a talent was formed. Nelson learned that any job can be completed but if not done correctly, it is a pointless task. In his grade school years he created his first works. Buying silver from his uncle, he would make silver cones that are used as the ending tips to a Heishi necklace. Once completed, he would walk throughout the village selling his silver cones to the many artists. Who knew that these elements would lay foundations to greater achievements in the years to come.<br><br>After high school Nelson said farewell to the comforts of home and in 1974 moved to Phoenix, Arizona. In school and full of optimism, he would begin the next chapter to his life. He started working in a local jewelry store as a silversmith. Once again studying his surroundings, this experience would give him the momentum to go into business for himself. As time passed, like every man he would find his happiness. In 1975 he married his wife Helen, a Navajo from the Naakaii Dine’e clan. A year later his first child was born, a daughter whom they would name Coreen.<br><br> To any business the early years define character and will. In 1983 with a newborn son, AAron, he decided to go into business for himself. With his creations packed and loaded into his car he drove to Page, Arizona for his first Art show. That Saturday he would make his first sale as an independent artist. Sadly, that would be his only sale for that day. One ring, in which he had to debate the price, but was finally sold. With a fresh fourteen dollars in hand, one would think dread would set in. Showing resilience he drove the next day to the Coconino center in Flagstaff, Arizona. This bold step would define his business ethic. He would attend this next art show with high hopes and patient hands. Driving home later that night with four-hundred eighty dollars in his pocket, his American dream had become a reality.<br><br> As the year’s have passed, Nelson has won many distinguished awards at some of the nations largest art exhibits. From the Santa Fe Indian Market to Red Earth in Oklahoma city. His jewelry has traveled into the heart of Europe with shows in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He has formed relationships of trust with his many customers in the western world. Assured perfection in his work is what should be expected. Only selecting the finest stones and designing the most careful expressions.
