Mitchell Sockyma Hopi overlay screw back earrings sterling. Solid sterling. Weight and measurements in pics. Mitchell Sockyma was born in Hopiland in 1942 and spent his childhood in the third Mesa village of Hotevilla. In 1973, he landed a job at the Hopi Crafts Shop, a workshop and studio new his home where his two older brothers were also silversmiths. Over the years, Mitchell has expanded his range of skills, including soldering 14k gold onto silver, which embellishes the traditional Hopi symbols he uses. As a member of the Corn Clan, his use of corn stalks is important, as is the Kokopelli, turtles, bear paws, and claws and wave designs. Unlike many other Hopi artists, he combines several of these design elements into one piece. He also incorporates brightly colored gemstones, natural turquoise, lapis and coral into the design. Considered one of the finest contemporary Hopi jewelers today, Mitchell has won numerous awards for his stunning pieces from the Northern Arizona Museum and Gallup, New Mexicos Annual Intertribal Ceremonial. He still resides with his family in Hopiland where he maintains a lifestyle in which art and beauty are intertwined with his Hopi religion and values in his everyday life. Lee and Mary Weebothee are master Zuni silversmiths and inlay artists from the Zuni Pueblo. Mary unfortunately passed away in 1993. They both made jewelry since the 1940s and Lee has said that they sold to wonderful traders like C.G. Wallace, R. L. Wallace, Joe Tanner and Dude Kirk. They also sold beautiful jewelry to Don and Nita Hoel over the years. Lee was born in 1929 and Mary in 1933. Lee and Mary married in 1949 and started making jewelry together shortly after. Greg Schaaf stated in his book “American indian Jewelry: 1200 Artist Biographies that “they were one of the best husband-wife teams in the history of Zuni jewelry. Lee did most of the silver work while Mary was the stone cutter, which she learned to do from Lees mother, Lula. She is known for her master stone cutting skills which are very unusual because of the rounded edges on the stones. They both then set the stones. They are very well know for their interesting cluster work but they also did other types of work using beautiful high quality stones. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.

Alvin and Lula Begay Navajo silver and coral earrings. In 1956, Alvin and Lula Begay were both born into artistic families in Winslow, Arizona. They have worked as a silversmithing team since 1991, each serving their own role; Alvin works on the overall composition and construction of the piece, while Lula works on the setting/cutting of the stones as well as the polishing and final touches. The dynamic pair is known to not use any pre-made findings, everything outside of earring posts are handcrafted. Alvin is especially known for using his techniques of double and triple overlay, reversible necklaces, shadowboxes, and engraving--often all on the same piece!

While still very adept in the art of jewelry-making, Alvin’s first love is bareback riding in rodeos. He grew up in a traditional Navajo life style on the reservation and is a natural athlete and cowboy. He has competed for 10 years, winning championships in 1987 and 1989. Although Alvin is a very humble and unassuming individual, he is one on AIRCA’s top award winners. Awards in jewelry-making are also no stranger to Alvin; among several awards, he has won first with a necklace in a competition in Dallas, Texas.

Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Felicita Eustace, Cochiti (1927-2016) Carved turquoise silver clip on earrings 1" tall x 7/8" wide, strong springs on clips, no issues, 8.6 grams. Felicita was a potter and silversmith.

Felicita was born in 1927 and raised at Cochiti Pueblo. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said.

The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.

Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. It wasn’t the designs they were talking about, it was the technical aspects of our work: setting stones, welds, engravings and so on. They were the ones who would be selling these items for us, so they would make sure that a certain standard of quality was being met.”

Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Ring is size 8, everything is large and great. Tape measure and penny for scale.

Few silversmiths match the power and artistry of Art Tafoya. He specializes in silver. Hammered silver. The old way. Art Tafoya carries on that tradition of the early masters, for he makes his own stamps and dies. Art’s clear and crisp stamp work speaks of skill and talent born of that tradition. Thick silver, hammered like leather, only deeper, brisk, clear and lovely.

Art Tafoya, silversmith and artist, learned the basics of silversmithing at the age to twelve from a blacksmith at a riding stable near his home. Later he learned the art of making handmade stamps and dies from Carlos White Eagle, a former student of the legendary Navajo silversmith Fred Peshlakai. Art has made an exhaustive study of Fred Peshlakai’s stamps and is an expert at identifying even unsigned work by this master. All of Art’s stamps and dies are his own creations. He specializes in hand stamped old-style jewelry reminiscent of Peshlakai’s, but definitely all of his own.

His original jewelry is highly sought after by collectors worldwide. He was a silversmith in residence at The Turquoise Shop at Knotts Berry Farm in California for twenty-five years before relocating to New Mexico. Retired James Avery sterling earrings 11/16" tall x 3/8" wide both with mixmatch backs that work, no other issues. 7.7 grams anderascoll James Avery founded his company in 1954, initially crafting jewelry in a two-car garage in Kerrville, Texas, with just $250 and a desire to create lasting value for others. Mr. Avery believed that meaning is what makes life more beautiful and this concept continues to drive how we design jewelry to this day. In 2007, 53 years after he first founded the company, James Avery officially stepped down as CEO and passed the reins on to his sons, Chris and Paul. Mr. Avery’s mission was simple: to create jewelry with meaning—both for himself and others. With a focus on creating straightforward designs and a core belief of integrity in all things, his jewelry became more than precious metals and gemstones. Guests came to him with their stories—their special moments—so he could craft them into pieces they would wear with pride for a lifetime. From writing letters to greeting Customers, Mr. Avery prioritized developing lasting relationships with each person who connected with his designs.

Henry Steig (1906-1973) Modernist sterling freeform Screw back earrings (3)
pair. Selling the 3 pairs shown, largest 1.25" long, 19.7 grams total.

Jules Brenner and Henry Steig were among group of prominent of New York
mid-century studio jewelers who hand-crafted pieces of wearable art that
celebrated the avant-garde, rejected traditional jewelry forms, and appealed to
an intellectual and liberal middle class. Jules Brenner was born in the Bronx,
grew up in Washington Heights, and studied acting with Stella Adler and painting
and sculpture in Greenwich Village. Henry Steig (also known as Henry Anton)
studied at City College and the National Academy of Design, and began his career
as a New York City jazz musician, writer, novelist, cartoonist, and painter.
During the 1950s, both Brenner and Steig operated shops and studios in Manhattan
and in Provincetown, Massachusetts—then a prominent artists’ enclave—where they
sold hand-wrought silver and gold designs which often emphasized biomorphic,
surrealist, cubist, and geometric forms.

Everyone knows the famous picture from the film The Seven Year Itch, of Marilyn
Monroe standing on a New York sidewalk, her skirt blown up by on updraft from
the subway grate below. However, not everyone knows that at that moment she was
standing in front of Henry Steig's jewelry shop at 590 Lexington Avenue.
Henry Steig was a man of many talents. Before he became a jeweler, he was a jazz
musician, painter, sculptor, commercial artist, cartoonist, photographer, short
story writer and novelist.

"Henry was a Renaissance man," says New Yorker cartoonist Mischa Richter, who
was Steig's good friend and Provincetown neighbor.

Henry Anion Steig was born on February 19, 1906, in New York City. His parents,
Joseph and Laura, had come to America at the turn of the century, from Lvov
(called Lemberg in German), which was then in the Polish port of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. Joseph was a housepainter and Laura, a seamstress.

They had four sons, Irwin, Henry, William and Arthur, all of them versatile,
talented and artistic. William Steig is the well-known New Yorker cartoonist and
author-illustrator of children's books. lrwin was a writer of short stories for
the New Yorker. Arthur was a painter and poet whose poems were published in the
New Republic and Poetry magazines.

William Steig recalls, "My father and mother both began pointing and become
exhibiting artists after their sons grew up." In the May 14, 1945, issue of
Newsweek magazine, an article was published about an exhibition, "possibly the
first one family show on Art Row (57th Street)" at the New Art Circle Gallery.
It was called "The Eight Performing Steigs, Artists All." Included were
paintings By Joseph and Laura Steig; drawings and sculpture by William and
paintings by his wife, Liza; paintings by Arthur and his wife, Aurora; and
photographs by Henry and paintings by his wife, Mimi. The only brother not
included was Irwin, "the only non-conformist Steig," who was working at that
time as advertising manager of a Connecticut soap manufacturer.

In the article "the brothers attribute the family's abundance of good artists to
the fact that we all like each other's work…get excited about it. Whenever
anyone starts they get lots of encouragement. Joseph Steig adds, 'Painting is a
contagious thing. If you lived in our environment, you would probably point.'"

Henry Steig grew up in this extraordinary environment. The family lived in the
Bronx. After graduating from high school, Henry Steig went to City College
(CCNY). After three years he left to study painting and sculpture at the
National Academy of Design. He was also an accomplished musician, playing
saxophone, violin and classical guitar, and while he was in college, he began
working as a jazz musician. From about 1922, when only sixteen years old, until
1932 he played reed instruments with local dance bands.

After four years at the National Academy, Steig worked as a commercial artist
and cartoonist. He signed his cartoons "Henry Anton" because his brother William
was working as a cartoonist at the same time, for many of the same magazines.
From about 1932 to 1936, Henry Anton cartoons appeared in Life, Judge, New
Yorker and other magazines.

Steig began a writing career in 1935 that lasted until about 1947. He became
very successful and well known as a short story writer, with stories appearing
regularly in Saturday Evening Post, New Yorker, Esquire, Colliers and others.
They were often humorous tales about jazz and the jazz musicians who populated
the world of music in the roaring twenties. Other stories were about his Bronx
childhood. He also wrote nonfiction magazine pieces, including a New Yorker
profile of Benny Goodmon and jazz criticism. Several of his nonfiction articles
were illustrated by William Steig.

In 1941 , Alfred A. Knopf published Henry Steig's novel, Send Me Down. The
story, told with absolute realism, is about two brothers who become jazz
musicians in the twenties. On the book jacket, Steig wrote, "Much of the
material for Send Me Down was gathered during my years as a jazz musician
playing with local jazz bands and with itinerant groups in vaudeville and on
dance hall tour engagements. Although I was only second-rate as a musician, I
know my subject from the inside, and I believe I was the first to write stories
about jazz musicians, based on actual personal experience." His son, Michael,
recalls that there was some interest in making a movie of the book. "My father
told me that John Garfield wanted to play the lead character."

Steig did go to Hollywood in 1941, under contract to write screenplays. He was
going to work with Johnny Mercer, the songwriter. After the ing of Pearl Harbor
on December 7, he returned to New York. "He undoubtedly would have returned
anyway," says Michael Steig. "He was not happy with the contract his agent had
negotiated for him." Henry Steig (1906-1973) Modernist sterling freeform pin and screw back earrings
set 2 5/8" x 2 1/8", earrings 1". 14 grams total weight.

"He was not happy with the contract his agent had
negotiated for him." Mischa Richter odds, "Henry was very unimpressed with
Hollywood."
