No<br>issues.<br><br>Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making<br>from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although<br>this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his<br>talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known<br>artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral<br>nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly<br>one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Leekya Deyuse (1889-1966) Zuni Carved turquoise Cast silver bracelet. Carving<br>attributed to Leekya Deyuse, another cast bracelet with similar carving also on<br>a high quality stone, also with the same seam in the back center as this one,<br>also with three scratched letters which were likely a pricing code at the time<br>was sold by Cowan's auction in 2020 with the carving attributed to Leekya<br>Deyuse.<br><br>LEEKYA DEYUSE (1889-1966)<br>Leekya Deyuse is unquestionably the most famous of the Zuni Carvers. One of the<br>most expert and innovative carvers of his time, to this day his works command<br>the highest prices by collectors and museums alike. Sotheby’s sold a necklace<br>with turquoise leaves set in silver, well in excess of $35,000.00.<br><br>His carving legacy lives on through his children whom he taught to carve and who<br>are now or were master jewellers or carvers in their own right. Jolene is<br>a recipient of a fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts<br>(SWAIA) and has worked with SWAIA’s mentor program, teaching jewelry techniques<br>to Native students.<br><br>Jolene’s jewelry is characterized by the quality of materials and its striking<br>individuality. She says, “Whoever said you have to play by the rules? I want my<br>jewelry to say something. It cannot be just jewelry. He likes to incorporate humor into his work, as can be seen in his<br>wonderful lizard pins that are designed to perch on the wearer's shoulder, one<br>of his unique designs.<br><br>Growing up in Albuquerque, away from his father's Zuni Pueblo and his mother's<br>Jicarilla Apache Reservation, Allenroy was not always interested in his native<br>heritage, much less in making jewelry. In high school, he became interested in<br>fancy dancing, one of his favorite activities through today. At this same time,<br>his father took up jewelry making to support their family after being disabled<br>in an accident, but it still did not interest Allenroy. Instead, he earned a<br>degree in technical engineering. It was not until his father died several years<br>later, when his mother gave him his father's tools, that Allenroy realized this<br>was his inheritance and heritage. Today he considers his father to be his<br>strongest inspiration.<br><br>This feeling was reinforced one time when he was having a creative block. He<br>found a lizard in a shed he was cleaning, and was captivated by its colors and<br>shapes. "It was like someone told me, 'make inlay lizard jewelry.' I felt it was<br>my dad telling me to do that." It seemed logical after that to move on to<br>turtles and frogs.<br><br>Allenroy is interested in educating as well. His sons, Ignacio and Kyle, have<br>already started making jewelry, and have won awards for their work. Allenroy<br>also teaches school children about native heritage, trying to break down the<br>image of the "stereotypical Hollywood Indian." He performs a solo show that<br>incorporates storytelling, dancing and flute playing at schools. He would also<br>like to "be an inspiration to native urban Indians who have lost their<br>connection with their reservation or their native ties -- to help them find<br>there is something to connect them to that world."
